psychohohohoho · 02/01/2009 22:05

cos I read upwards of 70.

I kept a list, most months i read a minimum of 6, sometimes 10!, and some months I forgot to write down any, but adding up, I reckon 70 is about right.

the worst.......Monster Love by carol tolposki.....blurb sounding really good, reality VERY disturbing.

the best......the twilight series by stephenie meyer.......read them all at least twicegrin].

Soooooooooooo.........How about yours, and what was your worst and best??

But having read this thread I see I'm not alone in re-reading children's and teenage fiction so feel better. Am trying to read not as much chicklit this year though.

Mumwhensdinnerready · 05/01/2009 12:43

Have started my list and wonder whether to include those books that I start, but fail to finish.
Might be too shaming.

IdrisTheDragon · 05/01/2009 14:23

I am having a start date and finish date. Not sure how long the list will last though . It is also including books which are leafed through ie in the bathroom

Mumwhensdinnerready · 05/01/2009 15:48

Counting the bathroom books could bump up the numbers. How about cookery books as well? I like to skim through them even if I never cook any of the recipes. Just finished Jamie at Home which I borrowed from the library.

janeite · 05/01/2009 18:45

Lol - I don't think cookbooks count. If they did, it would up my total to at least 400 a year I bet!

Fennel · 06/01/2009 13:39

I might join in with keeping a list, people keep asking me what I've read and I only remember the recent few. I'm guessing I read about 70 adult fiction books a year. I'm not counting academic books or children's books.

Idris, I have a similar resolution, More Classics Less Chicklit.

In the last week of 2008 (which is all I can remember):

Mister Pip (OK)
Arlington Park (diverting chicklit)
Dreams from my father (loved it but I do have a huge crush on him which may suspend critical judgement).

Worst in 2008:
Kate Mosse Labyrinth was boring and I skipped most of the middle.

Best in 2008:
The summer book (Tove Jansen)
Never let me go (Kazuo Ishiguro)
The secret History (Donna Tart)
Half of a yellow sun (Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie)
Oryx and Crake (Margaret Atwood)

about 30 -although petered out considerably after june when dd arrived..

bozza · 06/01/2009 20:49

I read 32 books last year. I estimated 50. . I think I averaged about 2 a month with a huge peak in July when I was in Spain for two weeks and read about 7 or 8 books including the Count of Monte Cristo which is huge.

Posey · 06/01/2009 21:12

I've bee keeping a booklist for years now (it was me that started last years thread) and find it really interesting to look back on. I have definite phases I go through, like a chick-lit phase when dd was small as I really couldn't concentrate on anything harder!

Anyway this past year has been pretty poor number-wise as I only read 21 books. But, imho, I've read some corkers

Fave reads of the year are:

  • Random Acts of Heroic Love - Danny Scheinnmann
  • A Home at the End of the World - Michael Cunningham
  • A Prayer for Owen Meany - John Irving
  • Nobody Loves a Giner Baby - Louise Marney
  • The L-Shaped Room - Lynne Reid Banks
  • Voyage in the Dark - Jean Rhys

Have just ordered myself this which I thought was really nice

poppy34 · 07/01/2009 15:45

posey well I think its a great idea -it is really interesting to look back and also dh does it (this is more to avoid him rereading stuff although you'd think there was nothing left by bernard cornwell he hadn't read...)

FlossieT · 07/01/2009 17:01

Posey - I keep seeing that Ginger Baby one on the shelf at the library and wondering whether it's any good; you'd recommend it, then? (I have two ginger babies of my own )

Posey · 07/01/2009 20:48

FlossieT - I got it in the library booksale for 10p and couldn't resist that cover. Soooo cute . That, the fact it is set in Scotland and the ginger bit, all made it a sure fire hit for me. I really liked it!

morningpaper · 08/01/2009 20:07

I thought mine was about 100 but it was only about 60

OOh am going back to the old list making habit has had left behind since DS. I read about 15 last year, but this is all post DS and i have slowed down loads. My concentration span has become appalling.
