She keeps re-reading Harry Potter, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Skandar, Crookhaven and Rick Riordan's books (Percy Jackson, Magnus Chase and Kane Chronicles), Kay's Anatomy and Inventions.

I promised her a couple of new books, so I need to deliver!

LLMs are pretty good at book recommendations. You could put a list of things she's enjoyed into your favourite large language model (ChatGPT / whatever), add a bit of background on other interests / likes / dislikes and ask for a list of recommendations with a short synopsis for each.

Yeah, consume gallons of water and kill of a few trees instead of visiting a book shop. Ideal

BornAgainLuddite · 29/05/2026 19:19

@Raciney Not ideal, and also non-ideally, not everyone has a bookshop within walking / cycling / jogging / scootering / skateboarding distance.

Does she like reading? Those books are more yr 3-6 and not for a 14yr old!

I’m not sure what an average DC is like but neirther of mine could have read Harry Potter in Y3 on their own.

Would she be too young for Nancy Mitford?

I was reading Flowers in the Attic series, lace (Shirley Conrad), my mum’s jilly cooper books, Judy Blume and Steven king books at this age. And also John Steinbeck (of mice and men).

I also got really into Virago books at this time too. Lots of different writers and genres.

Hunger Games trilogy? DD12 isn't a big reader but has just read the first one and loved it.

Also The Bartimaeous Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud --there's also a fourth prequel book. They are some of my all time favourites books I still reread as an adult, so underrated and I've never understood why.

Old fashioned crime like Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers.
She might also like some of the Rosemary Sutcliffe historical books ( try The Eagle of the Ninth) or Geoffrey Treece ( try Cue for Treason) they are old fashioned "older child" mystery type books so nothing explicit but good twisty plots and quite sophisticated language and because they are historical stories they don't date in the same way that contemporary writing of its era has.

City Spies by James Ponti

Same here and I remember Jilly Cooper being passed around as well 😀😀😀😀

And the Bletchley Riddle

CAMHShelp · 29/05/2026 19:55

My daughter likes Kathleen Glasgow books but she’s not bought a new one out for a couple of years

BeanMeUp · 29/05/2026 19:59

I can't suggest any titles (at that age i had been reading totally inappropriate horror for years!) but get her down the library to see what takes her fancy without the cost commitment

My mum had no idea what I was reading but she did buy me Judy Blume books. I was also into true life ghosts stuff too. Scarier the better.

That’s why I did the range. Wimpy kid books are definitely yr 3 level. HP maybe more like 4-5

Based on what you've said she likes I highly recommend the School for Good and Evil.

It's about two best friends who are taken to a school to learn how to be fairytale heros or villains and they end up in opposite schools. It's great for anyone who loves magic /fantasy. There is some romance but it's smut free and the story mostly focuses on their various classes and adventures.

It's perfect for someone obsessed with harry potter /magic / fantasy.
