@TerpsichoreI have Deep Sea and Foreign Going and one other by George I can’t remember. I didn’t get far but suspect it was my mood

I've put books aside so often because I wasn't feeling it - and she’s a very personal writer. Maybe it would click with you another time?

Do you like underwater exploration? Susan Casey’s The Underworld is brilliant . I enjoyed Chris Bonningtons Ascent too

No, underwater exploration is a whole new world to me. Looks good. Thank you

The Indifferent Stars above DJ Brown
I read recently and I thought was amazing. It s a survival story from the Oregon wagon trail which is harrowing but also just blows you away with their bravery.

I read the story of the Donner Party on Wikipedia during lockdown. I always wondered why a film was never made.

I'll be listening to this! Thanks.

And in more general non-fiction, how about any of the works of Rose George, eg Deep Sea and Foreign Going, about the shipping industry

yyy to the wonderful Rose George. Also her Nine Pints, about blood (not really a gory read but full of astounding facts) and The Big Necessity, which is surely the best book about sanitation ever written! I wish she’d hurry up and write something else <if you’re on here, Rose….😉>

Edited

She published a new one, Every Last Fish, late last year, but seems to be a bit despondent about it not getting much notice, going by her substack posts: https://substack.com/home/post/p-182960642

This thread has thrown me for a loop - so many suggestions I don’t know where to start

Ah, thanks @exexpat - I'd missed that. Will get hold of it asap!

Benvenuto · 06/05/2026 20:54

I’ve just looked back at my Kindle to see which ones stand out - not sure about audio though as I don’t listen to audio books.

Black Diamonds by Catherine Bailey (about the family who owned the Wentworth Woodhouse estate).
Citizen Clem: A Biography of Attlee by John Bew
The Dinosaur Hunters by Deborah Cadbury (19th century fossil huntets)
The People: The Rise and Fall of the Working Class by Selina Todd
The Burgundians by Bart van Loo (or listen to him on The Rest is History podcast - there’s 2 episodes where he is interviewed)
Merchant Adventurers: The Voyage of Discovery by James Evans (16th century Arctic exploration)

Will be checking out some of the thread recommendations.

Placeoftides · 06/05/2026 21:57

Oh my goodness! This thread is why I'm on MN! I'm a huge non fiction fan. I need to go to bed now but marking my place so I can have a proper look in the morning

In the Heat of the Moment is a fantastic one. Firefighter with a neuroscience degree describes experiences from her work, and uses each one to explain a different aspect of why people act in certain ways under pressure or during stressful events. Her knowledge has been used to create training exercises and protocols which are used all around the world, it's fascinating.

This thread has thrown me for a loop - so many suggestions I don’t know where to start

I have a google doc where I keep a list of books I want to read and then I put them all into ereaderIQ to track discounts. It means I read things in a bit of a random order but it stops me from buying 1000 books that I'll never get through, and it stops me from forgetting about things too.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 06/05/2026 22:18

Good plan @BertieBotts I have an Amazon wish list and I need to systematically go through and add everything

OP posts:
SheilaFentiman · 06/05/2026 22:54

@BertieBotts that sounds ace I have added to my Amazon list

weegiemum · 06/05/2026 22:58

I loved this book

Placeoftides · 07/05/2026 20:49

I've only just found this thread and I love it! So many great recommendations. Most of my recent favourites have already been mentioned, my suggestions would be Place of Tides by James Rebank (see username!) and for people interested in American politics Hillbilly Elegy by JD Vance. Yes it's 10 years old and I read it when it first came out as I suspect a lot of non fiction fans did but it's definitely worth rereading now he's vice president

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 07/05/2026 20:53

@Placeoftides I very much liked Hillbilly Elegy, he’s done so well all things considered, I try and recommend it but most people won’t touch it, because JD Vance! He has sold his soul to be where he is now in fairness!

OP posts:
Placeoftides · 07/05/2026 20:54

I've just been sat reading Into Thin Air by John Krakauer which has been mentioned, I'm not sure if Into The Wild, also by him has been suggested

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 07/05/2026 20:57

Yes I’ve read it and i’ve also read Into Thin Air and Under The Banner Of Heaven

OP posts:
Placeoftides · 07/05/2026 20:59

@EineReiseDurchDieZeit EineReiseDurchDieZeit he absolutely has sold his soul, I completely agree. I found I felt very different about the book reading it when he was vice president, compared to how I felt reading it when it first came out (I'm interested in obscure American politics and sociology)

Placeoftides · 07/05/2026 21:03

I've just googled Under The Banner of Heaven. Thanks SO much! I somehow have never come across this before, I love MN sometimes

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 07/05/2026 21:05

@Placeoftides There’s also a TV series of the same name with Andrew Garfield. It’s currently on Disney+ but might also be on ITV Player because they showed it as well.
