I am particularly looking for something that works as audio

So I liked

Bad Blood by John Carreyou
Say Nothing and London Falling by Patrick Radden Keefe
The Only Plane In The Sky by Garrett Graff
A Woman Of No Importance by Sonia Purnell
Mrs. Jordan’s Profession by Clare Tomalin
Letters Between Six Sisters ed. Charlotte Mosley

among others!

A Libertarian Walks into a Bear

Tootingbec · 06/05/2026 07:26

@ChickensAndEggs you are correct - Into Thin Air.

I was confusing it with Touching the Void! Which I haven’t read 🙂

The OP mentions London Falling - I inhaled that book this weekend - so good and will now seek out other books by the author

Read them both! Brilliant! But the Rebecca Skloot isn’t fiction!

Edited

True! Not sure why I thought differently. It's been a while since a read it 😊I wanted to add Lesson in chemistry, which is fiction but doesn't feel like fiction.

BeaAndBen · 06/05/2026 08:28

@Figurinea - the dog has a full vocabulary. How does that not feel like fiction?

ÚlldemoShúl · 06/05/2026 08:29

Dammit @EineReiseDurchDieZeit now I’ve added more to my wishlist and I’m trying to RWYO 🤣 Screenshotting many ideas here.

Littlecrake · 06/05/2026 08:51

I’ve enjoyed

A Very English Scandal - John Preston
Endurance - Alfred Lansing
The Looming Tower - Lawrence Wright

in my “to listen” pile

The Lives & Deaths of the Princesses on Hesse - Frances Welch
London Falling - Patrick Radden Keefe (I haven’t read “Say Nothing” but enjoyed the tv adaptation)

I’ve added American Kingpin, Tunnel 29 & Henrietta Lacks on the basis of this thread

I hope you enjoy Precious. Do you have any other exploration favourites to recommend? I enjoyed Ranulph Fiennes’ Shackleton, not as much as Endurance though.

Do you like underwater exploration? Susan Casey’s The Underworld is brilliant . I enjoyed Chris Bonningtons Ascent too

Thought of a couple of others, @EineReiseDurchDieZeit - this might be a bit 'Londony' for your taste but Diamond Street: The Hidden World of Hatton Garden by Rachel Lichtenstein is really fascinating on an area that has a long and varied history.

Definitely second House of Glass and Nomadland, which are great. And have you read The Ratline?

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 06/05/2026 11:28

MyM8Marmite · 05/05/2026 23:03

Against The Machine by Paul Kingsnorth is an excellent read.

Noted

georgiana Duchess of Devonshire Antonia Fraser

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 06/05/2026 11:40

Two I recently bought but haven’t read yet:

The Plague Evelyn Lord
Munich David Pearce about the Busby babes air disaster

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 06/05/2026 11:41

Also London the biography Peter ackroyd

exexpat · 06/05/2026 11:54

If you like London-related non-fiction, have you read Oliver Bullough's Moneyland? Or Butler to the World?

Also This is London by Ben Judah?

And in more general non-fiction, how about any of the works of Rose George, eg Deep Sea and Foreign Going, about the shipping industry.

Have you read anything by Barbara Ehrenreich? Smile or Die, Global Woman, Nickel and Dimed, Living with a Wild God etc.

Disclaimer: I don't do audiobooks, so I have no idea if any of these are any good in that format.

BuffysBigSister · 06/05/2026 12:59

Currently reading Motherland - A Feminist History of Modern Russia by Julia Ioffe and loving it. Fascinating and easy to read. Also Someone Else's Music - Opera and the British by Alexandra Wilson - because I love opera

Hi eine. I like Sophy Roberts' two books - just read Training School For Elephants. I have forgotten the name of the book about the facial reconstructions surgery after WWI but that was amazing as is David Nott''s War Doctor. I think you have read Story of a Heart which is incredible. I also loved the book about Brian Clough bringing up those two boys. Not very good at titles!

I’ve got Sophy Roberts on TBR. I’ve read both the others

yyy to the wonderful Rose George. Also her Nine Pints, about blood (not really a gory read but full of astounding facts) and The Big Necessity, which is surely the best book about sanitation ever written! I wish she’d hurry up and write something else <if you’re on here, Rose….😉>

Rictasmorticia · 06/05/2026 13:31
