Looking for some recommendations please! Doesn’t necessarily have to be murder but crime would be good 😂

I've recently enjoyed the Railway Detective series by Edward Marston - set in Victorian times.

Sheeppig · 02/05/2026 21:00

I really like the Belinda Bauer books- dark subject matter but oddly uplifting with characters you really root for.
More mainstream detective fiction is the Simon Serailler (?) series by Susan Hill.
Or "Aussie noir" by Jane Harper. Her use of the barren, sun-scorched Outback is particularly effective.

HelenaWilson · 02/05/2026 21:02

Another railway series is Andrew Martin's Jim Stringer, set before, during and after WW1.

LittleMyLabyrinth · 02/05/2026 21:10

British Crime Classics is a great series. A lot to choose from.

Georgieporgie29 · 02/05/2026 21:15

Angela marsons - Kim stone books
jane casey - maeve Kerrigan books
Karin Slaughter - will Trent books and grant county books

These are all detective series’ that I’ve enjoyed

IggyAce · 02/05/2026 21:15

I enjoy LJ Ross several series to choose from.

I enjoyed The Frozen people.

Currently reading Now you see me.

Neighneigh · 02/05/2026 21:17

The Ruth Galloway series by Elly Griffiths is good

Notahomeswap · 02/05/2026 21:21

J D Kirk inspector Logan series is great ( read in order). Or the Inspector Maclean series by James Oswald also excellent. Both Scottish based but really good long series!

Numberwangggg · 02/05/2026 21:22

Michael Connoly’s Bosch series.

Peter Robinson’s Inspector Banks series.

MsInterpret · 02/05/2026 21:29

Have you read the Rebus series by Ian Rankin? First one is Knots and Crosses. They stand alone fine.

Belinda Bauer is my new favourite at the moment. Every single one of her books is brilliant and unique. She has an air of the Barbara Vine about her I think.

I've also recently enjoyed Alice Feeney books for pacey/dark thrillers.

Talking to the Dead by Harry Bingham is the first in his Fiona Griffiths series, set in Wales, Fiona has an unusual condition.

Another recommendation for Belinda Bauer, they’re stand alone novels but some really interesting perspectives.

If you’ve not read Ian Rankin’s Rebus novels, you can’t go wrong with those.

If you like a bit of magic and fantasy with your crime, Ben Aaranovitch’s Rivers of London series is worth your time.

Claire Mackintosh’s DC Ffion Morgan series is one of my recent faves (only 3 books in the series so far though).

Christopher Brookmyre - his Jack Parlabane novels are so good, along with his Jasmine Sharp ones.

Colin Bateman’s Mystery Man novels - dark, funny, about a bookshop owner who only sells crime novels and ends up investigating crimes himself.

Tim Sullivan's George Cross series set in and around Bristol are great and get even better as the series goes on and all the other characters and personal storylines are developed.

SameNonsenseDifferentDay · 03/05/2026 06:02

Currently reading the Dangerous Stranger by Simon Mason - set in Oxford. You need

to start at the beginning of the series.

The David Gatward books set in North Yorkshire have been a recent favourite along with JR Ellis.

I’m just waiting for the latest realises from JD Kirk and LJ Ross.

Edited

You're right, there is a similarity to Barbara Vine, like her books there is an unsettling, slightly otherworldly quality to them and unusual but highly credible characters. The Vine book about the teenagers who ride on the top of tube trains really haunted me though I've forgotten its name!
Edited to say: I will be checking out Alice Feeney now.

HHCrochetDiva · 03/05/2026 13:26

I absolutely love the Inspector Gamache series by Louise Penny
Also Bryant & May by Christopher Fowler, absolute gems, brilliant characters and really interesting.

TomorrowMoreWorsts · 03/05/2026 13:33

I like Reverend Richard Coles’ books - they’re quite light, but also well observed and funny.

i loved Ian Rankin for a long time, I should re-visit him.

Ponks · 03/05/2026 15:44

Stuart MacBride’s Logan McRae series, full of rounded characters, bit of humour, some bleak storylines but I love the books. Again good to read from the beginning as there’s a great twist in one book.

Ponks · 03/05/2026 15:44

Also second Jane Casey and the Maeve Kerrigan series.

SpunkyKhakiScroller · 06/05/2026 23:15

Perveen Mistry series by Sujata Massey. First book is Widows of Malabar Hill. Female lawyer in 1920s India.

Maisie Dobbs series by Jacqueline Winspear. Post WW1 female detective.

Falco series by Lindsey Davis. Roman historical novels.

Inspector Montalbano series by Andrea Camilleri. Set in Italy

Steelworks · 07/05/2026 07:34

The prime suspect books are good.

Also, for lighter Cozy mysteries, books by Steve Higgs, particularly the Patricia Fisher series, or the Albert and Rex series.

TonTonMacoute · 07/05/2026 10:36

I really enjoyed the Medicus series, by Ruth Downie. Also set in Roman times, very funny.

Iamateadrinker · 09/05/2026 16:32

Another vote for George Cross books ( and short stories on audiobook) by Tim Sullivan
I also like The Finder series by Simon Mason - short and easy to read but with good plots.
