The Husbands by Holly Gramazio. Witty, funny, delightful.

Sourisblanche · 26/03/2026 20:20

I picked up The Keeper of Lost Things recently in a charity shop and really enjoyed it. I’ve been struggling to get back into reading recently and it was an easy and uplifting read for me.

PG Wodehouse: any of the Jeeves books should see you right ❤️

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 26/03/2026 20:23

I recommend this on here all the time- The Fortnight in September by RC Sheriff.

Normal family goes on a normal holiday in the 1930s. It's lovely, lovely, lovely.

The book I turn to in similar situations to you is the Diary of a Provincial Lady by E.M. Delafield ~ it never fails to distract and amuse me

DuckySir · 26/03/2026 20:24

I read the OP and also thought about ‘The Husbands’ by Holly Gramazio, was happy to see it be the first recommendation ☺️

Mydahliasareshit · 26/03/2026 20:26

Second the idea of a PG Wodehouse Jeeves compilation. Soul restoring, please try it.

A Psalm for the Wild-Built. If you feel lost or alone, if you want something cozy that also touches some bigger questions, this is it. A robot (in a society where robots walked into the wilderness and completely disappeared hundreds of years ago) and a tea monk go on a journey together.

Oh some lovely suggestions - thank you. Appreciate you all understanding the brief 😁

Tuesdays with Morrie - Mitch Albom

Bella Figura by Kamin Mohammadi.
Kamin takes herself off to Italy and turns her life around with food, walking and sunshine. Uplifting and motivational...a love letter to Italy.

I re-read my favourite children’s books in this kind of situation. The Chalet School, Silver Sword, Cue for Treason, Dark is Rising, Noel Streatfeild… so many.

BiscuitTins · 27/03/2026 17:58

Miss Pettigrew lives for a Day.

I saw it recommended on here years ago when I was looking for something similar to you.
A gorgeous book

rainbowsandraspberrygin · 27/03/2026 17:59

Anything by Marian Keyes I find very easy to read. I’ve got a few others on my kindle I love but of course can’t remember so will come back later with some other ideas!

Dappy777 · 27/03/2026 20:26

I add my vote for P. G. Wodehouse. There is nothing else like it in the English language (maybe not in any language). It’s worth reading him just for the sublime prose. But, as well as being one of the finest stylists in the language, he’s also the happiest and most joyful. Try Right Ho Jeeves.

Patrick Fermor is a wonderfully uplifting writer as well. I would recommend A Time of Gifts. (His other books can be harder going.)

Also, try listening to Brian Blessed read his autobiography Absolute Pandemonium. I had to pull my car over I was laughing so much.

Maybe try Douglas Adams, Bill Bryson and Evelyn Waugh as well.

I usually like crime and thrillers, but I really like Nora Robert’s when I want something light.

My favourites are the dream trilogy and the in the garden trilogy.

Jfw82 · 27/03/2026 21:43

probably too late but ‘the trustee from the tool room’ Neville Shute

I have nothing to add but will revisit this thread for ideas

TrashHeap · 27/03/2026 21:50

The Thursday Murder Club books. Honestly they are amazing.

Aweekoffwork · 27/03/2026 21:53

Anything by Carole Matthews - romantic comedies

Yes! I love this. Also, I Capture The Castle. Just lovely. And honestly Jilly Cooper has seen me through some tough times. Her warmth and generosity shine through her books. Riders, Rivals, Polo and The Man Who Made Husbands Jealous.

Abustedflush · 27/03/2026 22:01

Here’s one from the left field:

Enchanted April by Elizabeth Van Armin

It was written in the 1920s and is about 4 women who don’t know each other, but come together to rent a castle in Italy for the month of April.
It’s completely charming, funny at times and a window into a long past world, but still gets to the heart of what it is to need friendship and love in your life.

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 27/03/2026 22:17

Oh Jilly Cooper! Brilliant.

Uberaddict · 28/03/2026 11:49

Unfortunately did Jilly Cooper in a similar difficult time but some great suggestions here

You might enjoy looking at Persephone Books. They have a wonderful bookshop in Bath but also do mail order. I love getting one of their books in the post. They have over 150 to choose from and I am slowly building my collection

Would highly recommend the ones by Dorothy Whipple as a starting point . . .
