@Namechangedasouting987did you increase the narration speed on Audible? I often increase to x1.2 or x1.5 if the narration is too slow. You get used to it very quickly.

No I did not try that. Sometimes I want to read it though! I often have a book going in both.

I am currently in the early stages of riding a motorbike, I’m reading Remember You're a Rider: The Mindset Guide for New and Nervous Motorcycle Riders by Claire Jones. It’s aimed at everyone, but Claire Jones is in her 50’s and going through the menopause, same as me, and it’s a good read. I wouldn’t say I’m a nervous rider but there are days it is harder than others, and this book addresses that.

I never read self-help books usually, so it’s a first for me and I’m finding parts of it really good, rather than the full thing. I’d say that’s probabky what self-help books aim for.

I’ve finished James by Percival Everett, but feel I would have got more out of it if I’d read Huckleberry Finn recently.

I’ve now started The Light Years by Elizabeth Jane Howard, and my next book will either be Greenwitch by Susan Cooper, or Agnes Aubert’s Mystical Cat Shelter by Heather Fawcett.

I found James quite disappointing tbh, considering it was a Pulitzer Prize winner. I didn’t feel invested in any of the characters and puzzled when I heard people say they were moved to tears by it!

GreenSedan · 21/03/2026 19:33

I just finished The Names by Florence Knapp. Absolutely loved it. My favourite book in a while. Strong recommend.

I really loved James. I felt very invested in Huck and James and loved the story arc.

I'm about to read My Life as a Fake by Peter Carey. I found it on my book shelf and can't remember if I've read it already or not. Soon to find out!

alino · 21/03/2026 19:55

Just started The Terror by Dan Simmons. I like it.

outerspacepotato · 21/03/2026 22:16

Still listening to Middlemarch. Wonderful book.

I just finished Sister Svangerd and the Not Quite Dead by K. J. Parker aka Tom Holt. A little linguistics, a brief touch of theology, undead monsters, and it's fun. I'm looking forward to the next one.

@alino , I bought the audiobook of The Terror. I like winter ☃️ horror.

didgeridid · 21/03/2026 22:18

I'm reading Brighton Mermaid by Dorothy Koomson and I can not put it down! It's brilliantly written

Spaghettion · 21/03/2026 22:21

I’m currently reading Virginia Guiffrees autobiography, as expected it’s really shocking and sad. Next on my list is The list of Suspicious Things by Jennie Godfrey.

firstofallimadelight · 21/03/2026 22:22

just finished don’t let him in by Lisa Jewell which was fab now just about to start reading missing pieces Tim weaver.

Goonie1 · 21/03/2026 22:26

Im reading “Coded Gods Genes of the Apocalypse”
my friend wrote it so I’m reading to give some feedback. I loved reading but single parenthood left me with little time so this has gotten me back into reading so I’m thankful for that!

Rocketpants50 · 21/03/2026 22:27

The Alice Network by Katie Quinn, based on the WW1 spy network of women.

The read Beneath a Scarlett Sky based on the true story of Pino Lello - an italian teenager in world war 2.

Found both stories fascinating if anyone has any other historical based books.

autumnskyes · 22/03/2026 01:51

I just finished Our Last Wild Days by Anna Bailey and loved it. A mystery set in a small town in Louisiana with great characters and loads of atmosphere. So good!

Current - The Elements by John Boyne. I overall like it, but pretty dark and uncomfortable in parts.

Next - Road Ends by Mary Lawson. I love her other 3 books, so I'm sure this is going to be good.

FiveMetresUp · 22/03/2026 02:09

Currently: The Coworker (loving it)
Next: Count of Monte Cristo (has anybody read it? Is it an easy read?)

ExOptimist · 22/03/2026 02:23

I just finished The Land in Winter by Andrew Miller, I thought it was very good, excellently written, definitely deserved its Booker shortlisting.

Just started Three Days in June by Anne Tyler, who is one of my most favourite writers. I've read about 20 pages and am loving it, she is so great at sharply and wittily capturing the inner thoughts of seemingly the most ordinary of characters.

After that I'm going to read House of Mirth by Edith Wharton.

SpunkyKhakiScroller · 22/03/2026 22:36

Finished The Satapur Moonstone, Geneva, and Queens at War this weekend. The first was good, the second was terrible, and the third was fine but not to my taste.

Have begun a reread of Marking Time by Elizabeth Jane Howard. I am slowly rereading her Cazalet Chronicles 20 years after I first read them and am amazed at how I am picking up on different things now I am old and jaded!

Next up is James by Percival Everett for my book club.

I usually lurk but have literally just started The Count of Monte Cristo this weekend so popped out to wave! So far so good, I'm not very far in so it's mainly story setting so far but it's very easy to follow and seems.loke it will be engaging once it gets going. The main difficulty I am having is holding the book comfortably, it's bloody huge 😆

FiveMetresUp · 23/03/2026 19:12

@ProfessionalTeaDrinker I had no idea it was so long!!! I’m still keen though. Please let me know how you find it.

tobee · 24/03/2026 00:41

People seem to find Count of Monte Cristo absolutely gripping from what I’ve heard. Not read it myself.

That’s disappointing to hear about Our Evenings @EineReiseDurchDieZeit as it’s on my tbr pile.

I’m very impressed to hear you are learning to ride a motorbike @WonkyMirror. I hope you enjoy it and it gives you the experience you are seeking.

FiveMetresUp · 24/03/2026 08:03

@tobee are these normal folk, or intellectual types?

tobee · 24/03/2026 14:44

Normal folk!

Whereismyjoiedevivre · 24/03/2026 15:01

All That Man Is by David Szalay. Really enjoying it: perceptive, well written, bitter sweet.

IceIceBabyBump · 24/03/2026 15:20

Welcome to newbies!!

I'm currently reading: "All My Puny Sorrows" by Miriam Toews - based on a recommendation from another thread on here.

I love it, its very depressing but also very affirming and positive.

Next up might be "Cloud Atlas" by David Mitchell. I've got a big chunk of annual leave coming up so I'm hoping this will something to really get stuck into.

Am reading Bournville by Jonathan Coe. I am not loving it. Feels an over done formula, but the characters are so mundane as to be really dull.

I'm going to go back to Wide Sargasso Sea next as I've been rereading it for ages and need to get to the end.
