Have you ever thrown a book in the bin?

I did yesterday for I think the 3rd time in my life.
The first was that book by Gina Ford when DS1 was about 2 weeks old. It was all the rage at the time but DS definitely didn't want to follow the rules. In fact it was DH that threw it out and I was definitely a lot more.content.
The second was when I got out my old Doctor Dolittle books to read the kids and I realised they were littered with the N word. In a sort patronising racist way "the nice n man". Didn't want that word seen or normalised by any other kids so in the recycling it went.
The last was yesterday. Lying in bed realised their was a Neil Gaiman book on my book shelf. Didn't not want a book of that vile bastard staring at me so into the bin he went.
Foot all other books if I don't want them anymore.I just take them to the charity shop. But I didn't want to inflict the above three on anybody else.
Has anyone else?

I think that's unfair - it's actually a complex allegory/satire on prevalent scientific theories of the time - and the author was writing in the context of his era. It's futile to think we can erase racism and misogyny from history by binning books.

I'd be open to having my mind changed on it. Maybe there's more to it than I gave it credit for.

But it's definitely a children's book, which I read as a child, and I do remember the association of white=innocent=pure=holy and black=dirty=corrupted=fallen and in need of redemption. I don't think that's something we should be exposing kids to today.

Thisworldsnofun · 14/02/2026 21:05

Hell raiser. Set it on fire actually. But only because it belonged to an ex boyfriend and I was feeling vengeful!

Many of the modern editions aimed at children are heavily abridged - the full version would be quite a difficult read for a pre-teen of the 21st century, I should think. I was a teenager when I first read the whole thing back in the 80s but it wasn't until I was in my 20s that I 'got' all the allusions.

i had already passed on my copy of the salt path but i definitely would have binned it on principle if id still had it when the truth behind it came out

In my 20s tore Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar to pieces and flung it in the bin because it made me so distressed. Then I had to go and get a copy out of the library to finish it.

At my son's request I once had to take one of his R. L. Stine scary stories to the bin outside, because he was so scared of it being in the house.

Aww! That’s really sweet.

You have reminded me that I had to remove The Fierce Bad Bunny book from my DD’s big box set of Beatrix Potters and hide it. She was terrified of it. He gets his tail shot off with a gun! It’s not nice.

Needlenardlenoo · 14/02/2026 21:38

I was so scared of an Ursula Le Guin book as a child (the cover but also the contents) I had to put it out of the room at night!

peanutbuttertoasty · 14/02/2026 21:44

David Walliams. Only book I’ve ever thrown away.

Katisha · 14/02/2026 21:44

“We Need To Talk About Kevin”. Nasty. Only book I’ve physically binned.

WhosMadeline · 14/02/2026 21:48

Not me but my ex. I was reading The Female Eunuch by Germaine Greer in the hotel room on holiday and he grabbed the book declaring it to be crap and he chucked it outside through the patio doors. I retrieved and finished the book. Should have dumped him right there and then.

I don't agree with her views

You binned the Harry Potter books because you don't like J K Rowling's views? Sounds a bit extreme.

She founded Lumos in 2005, which has helped move thousands of children from orphanages into family-based settings.
Do you think she should have left those children in orphanages?

She launched Beira's Place in 2022 to provide women-centred support for victims of sexual violence.
Do you think female victims of male sexual violence shouldn't have that support?

Through the Volant Charitable Trust, she supports projects for female prisoners and survivors of domestic abuse.
Would you prefer that she didn't give that support those projects?

She's a great philanthropist, contributing to many worthy causes such as the creation of a new Centre for Regenerative Medicine at Edinburgh.
Do you disagree with her view that those with a great deal of money should use it to benefit others?

And of course she believes in the power of reading and has given joy to countless children through her books.

Personally, I find her views admirable.

I was given an inscribed little red New Testament when I was baptised as a baby. Later on, aged about eight, I took an axe to it in my dad's shed. I smashed it to pieces, and don't remember disposing of it but I'm sure it will have gone in the dustbin afterwards (no recycling in those days).

That's very dramatic! Why did you decide to do that?

OpenDreamer · 14/02/2026 22:04

You do you. While she may have done some good in the past and im not taking that away from her i do not agree with her views aroind trans people and the damage she has done to them. So yeah i binned her books

On what? Magic?
I'm sure she's gutted anyway. Shame you couldn't have given them to a charity shop but I guess small children might be harmed by thinking magic is real.

I can’t comment on your first two books but would question your destruction of a Neil Gaiman book. As a grown up I’m capable of separating an author from his work.
I’m a big fantasy reader and am fully aware of the Neil Gaiman situation (and others), but I would never destroy a book.
Equally, I won’t purchase any more of Gaiman’s works as I don’t wish to line his coffers, but I would donate to a charity shop if I wanted to get rid of my library (I don’t). His books are generally great and I would be happy for others to discover them as long as he doesn’t benefit at all.

Eh, it's personal opinion. I've always thought his books were pretentious, edgelord shit – he tried too hard to be shocking and creepy, but had very little substance or depth, and I always felt misogyny kept leaking through in a way that made me even more uncomfortable than Stephen King's unfortunate obsession with breasts.

So I wouldn't feel bothered if people couldn't read him because I threw a book out. No great loss.

Beesandhoney123 · 14/02/2026 22:15

A book for children that started out OK then stated fairies were children that weren't born, unwanted unborns. Had to make up whole new story on the fly. Binned book after ' finishing' it. Luckily dd wasn't yet reading.

She still talks about her favourite book. She will have s shock if she ever does read it, because I made up a whole new story every bloody night.

A book in a holiday home. Sickening. Tore it into tiny pieces and burnt it. I can only hope it was vanity published.

Oh honey, i do believe in magic which is why i have read many books that are so much better than hers and id direct a child there first. I regularly donate books but i just felt that the world is a little more inclusive with one less set of her pish in the world

what damage has she done to trans people?

You are getting your opinions 2nd and 3rd hand if you believe she does anything at all to trans people. She supports women and that's what annoys you and your TRA mates.

Another book i metaphorically cast aside with great force (in reality i sold it to Momax) was the sodding Alchemist. God what an awful awful awful waste of dead trees.

So you've been witness to JKR going round and beating up men who say they are women and you haven't reported her to the police?
You know she doesn't recycle, and puts empty milk bottles back in the fridge, don't you? She's just horrendous.

I assume you have also ditched all books by Charles Dickens and Neil Gaiman, or are they ok because they were horrible to women instead of helping them to achieve their rights?
