Have you ever thrown a book in the bin?

I did yesterday for I think the 3rd time in my life.
The first was that book by Gina Ford when DS1 was about 2 weeks old. It was all the rage at the time but DS definitely didn't want to follow the rules. In fact it was DH that threw it out and I was definitely a lot more.content.
The second was when I got out my old Doctor Dolittle books to read the kids and I realised they were littered with the N word. In a sort patronising racist way "the nice n man". Didn't want that word seen or normalised by any other kids so in the recycling it went.
The last was yesterday. Lying in bed realised their was a Neil Gaiman book on my book shelf. Didn't not want a book of that vile bastard staring at me so into the bin he went.
Foot all other books if I don't want them anymore.I just take them to the charity shop. But I didn't want to inflict the above three on anybody else.
Has anyone else?

The Shack by William P Young, can't even explain why, it made me feel odd and I just wanted it gone.

I remember as a child reading a book about a little black baby who wanted to be white and put whitewash on him and then a good fairy made him white. This was in the 60’s early and even then I thought it was a horrible book. Don’t know what it was called.

Was that The Water Babies? I re-read that as an adult about five years ago and was pretty appalled at the Victorian values on show. Plenty of black=bad, white=good etc, plus people getting tormented for their "sins" and some very unpalatable views of women.

Bin's the best place for it.

I remember reading Gina ford. ‘Put baby down for his nap at 11am’.

Put baby down. Baby screamed; refused to nap. I was most confused and stressed 😂 I think that’s the problem with GF; it sort of assumes the babies will just fall into line. As it was, both mine had fairly reliable wake windows and it would have been so much simpler with just ‘a baby of around three months will probably stay awake for around two hours then need a nap. But the nap will probably be very short; don’t stress, that’s normal.’

To be fair the black in question isn’t a reflection on skin colour, it’s the fact the protagonist (Tom?) is a chimney sweep.

Haunted by Chuck Palanuik 🤮

purser25 · 14/02/2026 19:30

Not the water babies

I think I threw my copy out of the window when I read the words, ‘during first nap, iron the cot sheets’.

Needless to say, I co-slept and the cot (and sheets) got zero use.

I tried to read House of Leaves once and it freaked me out so much I didn’t want it in the house. I gave it to the charity shop but have always been worried it will turn up one day on my doorstep again…

There's an awful lot of people it would seem who have "thrown a book across the room" or "at the wall". Is this something adults actually do, behaving like a petulant child and throwing books around because they don't like them? Surely most people just simply stop reading a book that they aren't enjoying?

I don't think he's raped! He willingly has sex with her. But it's all very muddled because there's deceit on both sides. I agree that it's very disturbing that she wants to potentially inflict the condition on a child, though. The whole book is honestly more like some kind of horror than anything else, haha.

he is attacked several times, and gets raped too. He makes it very clear that is why he never wants a child

I love The Shack and reread it.

I usually just pass on bossy I don't like, but I do buy Gina Ford books in the charity shop and chuck them in the recycling, to save babies from being subjected to her awful nonsense.

Interesting. I've only read Seven Husbands and didn't hate it but didn't get the hype. I might read Daisy Jones based on your review

I really liked Daisy Jones.

I threw some books in the bin at an airport check-in. They said my carry-on bag was overweight. Without the books, they tagged it and sent me to departures with my boarding pass. On the way past the bin, I fished the books out and put them back in my bag.

I've bought this but haven't started it yet 😬

JetSkiRentals · 14/02/2026 20:10

Yep. Russell Brand. POS him and his book.

Celiathebanshee · 14/02/2026 20:12

Also Gina Ford! I liked Sears & Sears at the time though. Carried all my sodding babies around for years. Not sure I’d feel the same if I read them now. I liked the time travellers wife at the time, too, but I think I would feel differently now.
I also binned Sheherazade somebody’s appalling Christmas book.

I think that's unfair - it's actually a complex allegory/satire on prevalent scientific theories of the time - and the author was writing in the context of his era. It's futile to think we can erase racism and misogyny from history by binning books.

JustMeAndTheFish · 14/02/2026 20:19

I can’t comment on your first two books but would question your destruction of a Neil Gaiman book. As a grown up I’m capable of separating an author from his work.
I’m a big fantasy reader and am fully aware of the Neil Gaiman situation (and others), but I would never destroy a book.
Equally, I won’t purchase any more of Gaiman’s works as I don’t wish to line his coffers, but I would donate to a charity shop if I wanted to get rid of my library (I don’t). His books are generally great and I would be happy for others to discover them as long as he doesn’t benefit at all.

Evenstar · 14/02/2026 20:21

I threw Pet Sematary by Stephen King away as I was too upset and scared by it to have it in the house.
I also threw a book with graphic descriptions of concentration camps away as I was too upset to even look at it again.
I always give them to charity otherwise or pass them on to DD.

RedRosie · 14/02/2026 20:24

A Little Life. So awful that I wanted to take at least one copy out of circulation. I've never read anything so bad (I kept going mostly out of disbelief). That's the only time though, I keep, pass on or donate generally.

Dappy777 · 14/02/2026 20:34

Portnoy’s Complaint. Disgusting book. Totally unfunny. Utterly vile, charmless central character. Whole thing made my skin crawl. I actually read some favourite passages from P. G. Wodehouse and Evelyn Waugh and Virginia Woolf to cleanse myself.

I threw the latest cormoran strike book at the wall. And then I was sad for several days before I could go back to reading it (because goddamit I wanted to know what happened next)

Me too it was a really annoying ending I kept saying for Gods sake get on with it, it’s becoming a joke the on off relationship of those two

localnotail · 14/02/2026 20:39

Dan Brown book - cant remember which one. Hurled it at the wall first and then binned it. Awfully written, idiotic bollocks.

BalloonSlayer · 14/02/2026 20:54

I bought Gina Ford's book when I was exhausted with my 8 week old baby and could not get any sensible advice from anyone about when I should feed him and when he should sleep:
Health Visitor: whatever he wants, dear.
My Mum: oh I don't know, I stood over you with a pillow thinking about whether to kill you, hahaha!
Well, cheers.
Gina Ford gave me a structure I could work with and adapt and I went on to have 3 children who slept brilliantly and were very contented. I must add to counter previous posters that morning naps would never be as late as 11am as it would mess up lunchtime and I never saw anything about ironing sheets!

Books I have destroyed: Marabou Stork Nightmares by Irvine Welsh and The Other Hand (?) By Chris Cleave. Both described horrific sexual assaults that gave me horrible nightmares and still haunt me to this day. I didn't want to send the books to charity shops in case anyone else read them.and felt the same. I must emphasise that it is clear that the authors wanted the reader to see the assaults as awful - there was no attempt to glamorise them, they were intended to be horrific . . . but still.
