Read What You Own 2026

This is a brand shiny new thread for those of us who want to continue reading what we own in 2026.
My aims for 2026 are:

  • At least half my reading will be from books I already own on 1st January 2026
  • I will buy less than a quarter of my reading new including kindle deals😱 and book club books
  • I will wait when prize lists are released to see if the books appear in the library within a week. I will not read full longlists unless I love the sound of each and every book on it.
  • For the first two months I will only read what I own- focusing on the older books on my kindle while allowing myself to read newer (but already owned) physical books
What are your RWYO aims for 2026?

I LOVE The Poisonwood Bible @Stowickthevast

Same, one of my favourite ever books - although it's been a long time since I read, I wonder whether a reread is on the cards (not till I've got through a few more RWYO books though!)

BeaAndBen · 08/01/2026 16:25

I'm re-reading The Stone Diaries by Carol Shields, which I haven't read since the first reading when it came out in 1993.

It's as good as I remembered.

MamaNewtNewt · 08/01/2026 17:06

😂 @WinterFrogs you are right no one else would get the achievement, I’m so chuffed with myself for not buying a book in 8 days!

oh I loved The Stone Diaries but haven’t read it for well over 20 years.

I finished a RWYO audible today Black and British by David Olusoga which was a great into to Black British history.

WinterFrogs · 08/01/2026 17:38

I've bent another rule 😔 Trying to read Nature's Mutiny by Philipp Blom which I had as a sample on my kindle. DD bought the paperback for me for Christmas, but I'm struggling to read it although the subject is interesting ( it's about the mini ice age of 1570 ish to 1690's) I've just got it on audible as I'm finding having it read to me much easier. But I'm hoping that means it doesn't become a dnf.

SilverShadowNight · 08/01/2026 18:12

Finished An Accidental Murder by J New.

Have started on The Stranger Diaries by Elly Griffiths which I bought in 2019.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 08/01/2026 19:30

Done - Fundamentally by Nussaibah Younis

CutFlowers · 08/01/2026 19:46

I haven't finished a single book yet this year except one library book - and I have bought 3 (agh!) more but I am today half way through Anna Karenina today* (which I started after Christmas). *It is lovely.

SheilaFentiman · 08/01/2026 23:51

Celestial Navigation - Anne Tyler

Not sure when I bought this, but the charity shop which sold it to me was replaced by flats long ago!

AliasGrape · 09/01/2026 07:57

Finished a 4th, another one that’s been on my kindle for ages - since 2016.

Hausfrau by Jill Alexander Essbaum

Another one I struggled to get into - I think this is going to be the case with a lot of these, and the issue is most certainly me at this point, part of me struggling to get my reading mojo back, I have to overcome the inertia every time it seems!

Doing well with the kindle RWYO, not no much the physical books. I did cave and buy Wedding People the other day when it was on a kindle deal. I’m not sure if it’s better to wait till I’ve got through a few more RWYO, or read straight away so it doesn’t become another unread purchase I was initially keen to read but ends up a RWYO book Im forcing myself to start in the 2030 version of this thread!

TittyGajillions · 09/01/2026 08:58

I hated Wedding People, it was an easy dnf for me.

CinnamonSweet73 · 09/01/2026 19:36

Another one done, Brazzaville Beach by William Boyd, on my kindle since Aug 2020. Next read is one for my book club so doesn't count for this - I'll only count books bought before 2026 as RWYO!

MamaNewtNewt · 09/01/2026 21:21

Just read my 5th book - The Outcast Dead by Elly Griffiths - and all have been RWYO so far.

Raven08 · 09/01/2026 22:49

Another 50 pages read ✔️
My youngest dc told me earlier she was concerned at the height of my tbr pile 😬👀🤣
she has a point tbh
So I've now got 2 tbr piles 😬

Lateral thinking, nice work 😀

SheilaFentiman · 09/01/2026 22:53

I am reading Midnight All Day. Short stories, so doing a couple at a time.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 10/01/2026 08:42

@Raven08Pleased for you!

TittyGajillions · 10/01/2026 10:08

I dnfed Addie LaRue, I'm now reading Rainforest by Michelle Paver. I don't know how she does it but nothing much has happened so far and I'm already feeling uneasy! Love it.

CatWithThreeLegs · 10/01/2026 10:09

Finished a re-read of Wintering by Katherine May yesterday. A good book for those of us struggling not just with actual winter but with health problems too.

Raven08 · 10/01/2026 10:27

I'm going to try and finish Clown Town today 😬
I have a few errands to run, and need a walk, but don't have much else planned

Peridot1 · 10/01/2026 12:01

Have put Golden Hill on the DNF pile.

Have started Blue Sisters by Coco Mellors instead. I only bought it (paperback) just before Christmas but at least it’s not ended up in the TBR cupboard of doom.

AnnaMagnani · 10/01/2026 12:44

Oh The Poisonwood Bible was such a strong DNF for me I gave it away.

DH, who actually does read what he owns, is also slogging through Anna Karenina so I get daily updates on it. Mainly 'Anna is really hot' 😂

Boudy · 10/01/2026 18:43

I am mainly reading Bournville and enjoiyng it. I have the Poisonwood Bible on my tbr. I hope I like it!

Raven08 · 10/01/2026 21:25

Well...I've finished my first book of 2025 and it was a rwyo 😊
Clown Town by Mick Herron - very good 👍
I've just found A month in the cou entry by J LCarr on my pile - its a novella, really, and at some point last year I started it, so thats next

ÚlldemoShúl · 10/01/2026 21:51

Congrats @Raven08 A Month in the Country is a beautiful book.
