Read What You Own 2026

ÚlldemoShúl · 30/12/2025 13:04

This is a brand shiny new thread for those of us who want to continue reading what we own in 2026.
My aims for 2026 are:

  • At least half my reading will be from books I already own on 1st January 2026
  • I will buy less than a quarter of my reading new including kindle deals😱 and book club books
  • I will wait when prize lists are released to see if the books appear in the library within a week. I will not read full longlists unless I love the sound of each and every book on it.
  • For the first two months I will only read what I own- focusing on the older books on my kindle while allowing myself to read newer (but already owned) physical books
What are your RWYO aims for 2026?

I also read Golden Hill didn’t rate it and can’t remember a thing about it

Now, I loved Golden Hill, though its authentic (or so it was claimed) language took some getting used to. A friend told me that Light Perpetual, by the same author, was one of the best books she'd ever read. But that one didn't do much for me.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 07/01/2026 17:59

@JanetheObscure Funny, Light Perpetual is on my TBR

Finished Black Woods, Blue Sky by Eowyn Ivey

Raven08 · 07/01/2026 20:02

I'm enjoying the book - the latest in the slough house series
I might try a few more pages before bed 😊

ÚlldemoShúl · 07/01/2026 20:06

Well done @Raven08 Slough House is a great choice to get out of a reading slump.

Thanks!
Yes...I've read a few and listened to a couple on audible.
The TV series is excellent - well worth a watch if you haven't seen it.

Boudy · 07/01/2026 21:49

That's great @Raven08 . I have read the first one. Will deffo read the others. I am re reading Dance with me by Victoria Clayton. Pure fun! I am trying to decide what new ones to start. Probaby Tidelands by Philippa Gregory and also Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris.

CatWithThreeLegs · 07/01/2026 21:52

Finished my re-read of Hamnet this afternoon, giving it a higher rating this time than when I last read it. I suspect I shall be an emotional mess after the film 😢

CinnamonSweet73 · 07/01/2026 21:52

Finally read Hamnet which has been on my Kindle since July 2020 - put off reading it many times, as I knew it would be a sad one. It is indeed heartbreaking, but beautifully written.

I read tidelands a while ago...I enjoyed it.
Bit different to her usual stuff

Boudy · 07/01/2026 22:58

I am looking forward to it @Raven08

Not at all! It's lovely to see so many new names but it's also rather confusing!

MamaNewtNewt · 07/01/2026 23:51

Just finished my 3rd book (Dying Fall by Elly Griffiths) and so far all have been RWYO and I’ve not bought any books so far this year. I’m going to continue with the rest of the Ruth Galloway series, as I have them all on my kindle, in between other books.

TittyGajillions · 08/01/2026 08:11

I'm 98 pages into The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue and not loving it, I'm thinking about soft dnfing so I can get on with one of the other books on my list.

Your comment about not buying any books this year made me chuckle. Only a true bookworm would appreciate the self control needed to resist book buying for a whole 8 days ❤️

Stowickthevast · 08/01/2026 13:30

I haven't been keeping track much but did finish my first two yesterday. They were just about RWYO but both purchased in December so not sure if they count.

But am now on a proper RWYO with The Poisonwood Bible which I think I first tried to read in around 2000 and didn't get into, an liking it much more this time!

Tarragon123 · 08/01/2026 14:04

Good stuff @Raven08 I’m a big fan of the Slow Horses. I love Gary Oldman’s portrayal of Jackson Lamb. I wasn’t so keen on the book, Down Cemetery Road, but really liked Emma Thomson in the tv adaption.

Everything counts @Stowickthevast Except library books, which I am best at hurtling through

Another two Chalet School books for me, taking me up to being half way through book 50 in the series.

Raven08 · 08/01/2026 14:08

@Tarragon123
I agree wrt: cemetery road...I enjoyed the TV show more than the book.
I think JL may be Gary Oldmans best role to date.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 08/01/2026 14:08

I LOVE The Poisonwood Bible @Stowickthevast

ÚlldemoShúl · 08/01/2026 14:42

I agree - anything you own pre Jan 1st is RWYO.
Also agree re Down Cemetery Road - it was a DNF for me and I’ve loved all the slow horses books. May try the tv show.
