Any inconsistencies below are my fault for not reading what Chat GPT produced

In 2026, we’re taking on Victor Hugo’s sweeping epic Les Misérables—all 365 chapters, read slowly and together at the pace Hugo intended: one chapter per day for the entire year. Whether this is your first time or your twentieth, you’re invited to join us on the long road from Digne to the barricades, and beyond.

Each chapter is short—some only a paragraph or two—making this a gentle, steady way to experience one of the greatest novels ever written.

As ever, we have options for translation, very likely I will read the Penguin Classics version, so page numbers et

🕯️ Norman Denny (Penguin Classics)
Smooth, readable, and modern. A favourite for first-time readers.
Pros: Accessible prose, clear flow.
Cons: Occasionally paraphrased; slightly softens Hugo’s style.

🗡️ Charles E. Wilbour (1862)
The very first English translation, contemporary with Hugo.
Pros: Atmospheric, close in tone to the 19th century.
Cons: Archaic language; some inconsistencies.

📜 Isabel F. Hapgood (1887)
A classic public-domain translation often found online.
Pros: Faithful and formal; widely available for free.
Cons: Dense Victorian phrasing; less smooth for modern readers.

🔍 Norman MacAfee / Lee Fahnestock (Signet)
Based on the original Hapgood but updated for clarity.
Pros: Balanced: faithful but easier to read.
Cons: Still slightly formal; sometimes understated.

🎭 Julie Rose (Vintage)
Energetic and lively, with modern idiom and punch.
Pros: Fresh, vivid, emotionally immediate.
Cons: Some find it too modernized.

As ever, would love to see your copies - and all of the above are suggestions, if people prefer breaking it up in different ways, then we can discuss.

I would like to join, I have the two volumes of the Wordsworth Classics' version but the print is tiny! I may invest in one for the Kindle.

ChannelLightVessel · 21/12/2025 01:46

I’m in! I’ve bought myself the Christine Donougher Penguin translation. To the barricades, comrades!

FinallyHere · 21/12/2025 11:50

I’m delighted to join you. And to rediscover that I bought the Christine Donougher Penguin version for kindle back in 2021 when I started a good few solitary projects only to abandon them for other more sociable endeavours.

so, I’m all ready to join in. Looking forward to your company.

HarryVanderspeigle · 21/12/2025 13:45

Ooh yes please. I used to have the book, which was split into 2 books as it was so long. It was too much to start reading, so I downloaded the Isabel Hapgood version when I got the Kindle. Still didn't get past Val Jean meeting the Bishop of Digne. Hopefully a read along will keep me going.

MizzyLes · 24/12/2025 05:43

I am marking my place for a year of barricades and consumption.

Workingmammabear · 24/12/2025 05:56

I've just discovered the Isabel Hapgood version on my kindle - whivh I vaguely remember buying after I watched the movie. Never read it so. I'm in :)

AgualusasL0ver · 24/12/2025 15:55

I have the Hapgood version on my Kindle too - very, erm, interesting cover. Since I am leading this one, I am going to pop to Oxfam at the weekend and see what they have in hard copy as I like to see how many pages etc for readlongs.

p.s. I would love to see everyone's covers - call it a nerdy obsession.

Picture didn't work. Weirdly the eye is what shows but when I 'open' it it is the second pic.

Have just ordered a copy and looking forward to joining in - this has been on my list of want to read for ages, but never quite got to it! A chapter a day sounds great plus I can read other stuff as well

Goodiewhemper · 27/12/2025 07:31

This has been on my TBR pile for years so I would love to join you. I have just downloaded the Donougher Kindle edition.

Piggywaspushed · 27/12/2025 09:28

My Vintage copy just came. It's a doorstop!

BookWurmple · 27/12/2025 09:33

Count me in please!
I tried this as a teenager and didn't get very far, a very long time ago

MamaNewtNewt · 27/12/2025 09:50

I’m in. I’ve never completed a read-along as I usually drop off when work gets busy but I’ll give it another go! I have the penguin version already.

Fatsnowflake · 27/12/2025 10:39

I’m in. I have the Christine Donougher translation. Very excited to join in.

Waawo · 27/12/2025 13:07

Ooh, I'm in! I read W&P this way a couple of years back and loved it.

I've just downloaded the Penguin/Donougher edition. Outraged in two different ways to see on one Amazon page, this book - written by Dumas, translated by Donougher, with an introduction by Tombs, listed as "Tombs et al"! :/

Not sure what happened there, obvs meant Hugo not Dumas, French classic author mix-up!

AgualusasL0ver · 27/12/2025 14:23

I’ve got my hard copy now as well. Visits to two Oxfam bookshops and they had no copies, so I ended up having a marvellous time and a nice chat with the bookseller in Waterstones about reading a chapter a day.

I will start the official first thread on NYE and reiterate details. I’ll use this version (Donougher) as the reference - though I have Hapsgood on my Kindle which has slightly different titles.

I did just read the first few paragraphs of both together and they are very very similar. Of course, then we have our French readers.

I’m in. I usually do well for the first bit of the read along, then fall massively behind, then finish the book a few months after everyone else but keep reading the thread according to where I am in the book (if that makes sense…!)
As a result I usually stop posting. I hope to keep up this time.

I have a copy but it’s at home and I have no idea what version it is. I’m staying with my dad for Christmas. I’m not going home until after the New Year because my mum died suddenly and unexpectedly at the start of December. I haven’t been able to concentrate on reading so even though I’m starting a day late I hope this will help me start to focus on books again.

AgualusasL0ver · 27/12/2025 17:22

Sorry for your loss @babybythesea

I’ve marked the first 10 chapters and most are 2-2.5 pages, I think chapter 10 might be 6 pages IIRC.

I think the trick with readalongs is routine, whatever that looks like - everyday over breakfast, just after dinner before settling to whatever in the evening, reading the whole week on a Sat morning with a coffee.

I say that, but I also frequently fall behind, though I try to follow my own advice as much as possible.

FizzingAda · 27/12/2025 17:26

I’ve never done a read along, have my copy ready. Just wondering that if the story is really gripping how do you stop yourself reading more than the daily allotment?

AgualusasL0ver · 27/12/2025 17:57

It does happen, and it’s fine, people do read ahead sometimes, but not spoilers on the thread, so they chip is at the relevant time or similar. It’s very flexible, and the only real rules are generally the thread is at the stated pace and no spoilers - how people want to manage that is totally fine.

EmbroideredGardener · 27/12/2025 18:11

Ohh yes please! Les mis is my favourite musical, and I've never done a readalong before. I like the sound of doing this with other books too in future years
