'To the Barricades': 2026 Les Miserables, Victor Hugo Read-a-long [Interest Thread]

Any inconsistencies below are my fault for not reading what Chat GPT produced

In 2026, we’re taking on Victor Hugo’s sweeping epic Les Misérables—all 365 chapters, read slowly and together at the pace Hugo intended: one chapter per day for the entire year. Whether this is your first time or your twentieth, you’re invited to join us on the long road from Digne to the barricades, and beyond.

Each chapter is short—some only a paragraph or two—making this a gentle, steady way to experience one of the greatest novels ever written.

As ever, we have options for translation, very likely I will read the Penguin Classics version, so page numbers et

🕯️ Norman Denny (Penguin Classics)
Smooth, readable, and modern. A favourite for first-time readers.
Pros: Accessible prose, clear flow.
Cons: Occasionally paraphrased; slightly softens Hugo’s style.

🗡️ Charles E. Wilbour (1862)
The very first English translation, contemporary with Hugo.
Pros: Atmospheric, close in tone to the 19th century.
Cons: Archaic language; some inconsistencies.

📜 Isabel F. Hapgood (1887)
A classic public-domain translation often found online.
Pros: Faithful and formal; widely available for free.
Cons: Dense Victorian phrasing; less smooth for modern readers.

🔍 Norman MacAfee / Lee Fahnestock (Signet)
Based on the original Hapgood but updated for clarity.
Pros: Balanced: faithful but easier to read.
Cons: Still slightly formal; sometimes understated.

🎭 Julie Rose (Vintage)
Energetic and lively, with modern idiom and punch.
Pros: Fresh, vivid, emotionally immediate.
Cons: Some find it too modernized.

As ever, would love to see your copies - and all of the above are suggestions, if people prefer breaking it up in different ways, then we can discuss.

Ooh, yes please !

Les Misérables was the first thing I ever read on Kindle. I was trying out the app on my phone before deciding whether to buy one or not, and Les Mis was free. I found it surprisingly easy to read but would love to return to it in good company.

I've missed a few readalongs due to some family challenges so it will be great to have a new one for 2026.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 08/12/2025 20:36

I'm in too. I'll read in French and English.
I have the Christine Donougher on my Kindle already, so I'll go along with that.
Thank you for organising this @AgualusasL0ver!

Tarahumara · 09/12/2025 15:17

I've just downloaded the Christine Donougher version.

cornflakegirl · 09/12/2025 16:07

I'm in. Just bought the Donougher on kindle, suspect I'm more likely to keep up that way than with a physical book.

Isthisforevernow · 09/12/2025 17:24

Loving the idea of a chapter a day, thanks for the kindle link as that is most likely to be the way I get through it too! Means I can have it on my phone so if I’m not at home it will be right there. I’ve never read it despite reading many other classics over the years, and I love the musical so this sounds like fun!

AgualusasL0ver · 09/12/2025 19:44

I’ve been researching around (watched a YouTube video 😂) and it seems the chapters really are very short. We should expect lots of deviations (esp in a section called Waterloo), but I quite enjoyed the side saunterings of Tolstoy in War and Peace, so I am ready for more Napoleon.

For those first timers, I’ll start a fresh thread for 1 Jan and then each week update chapters/page numbers where relevant - and then at your convenience you just pop on and comment/read others comments etc.

If you want to get a sense, we’ve just finished Kristin Lavransdatter, previously we have read Ruth, War & Peace, Anna Karenina, Emma.

It is super casual, often someone will post summaries if readily available. Sometimes we just share thoughts, some people analyse more than others, but it’s just very flexible.

Thanks @AgualusasL0ver it sounds great. Really looking forward to it. I’m nearly finished War and Peace doing a chapter a day this year and have enjoyed the chilled pace of reading (though not all the digressions I must admit…)

AgualusasL0ver · 09/12/2025 21:23

Haha @ÚlldemoShúl when we did the readalong of W&P it was my second reading and I respectfully ducked Epilogue II. I did find myself totally engrossed in the war stuff - literally sitting on a bench in my nearby open space and envisaging the Battle of Borodino!

My copy arrived today, it's quite a brick! And very heavy. Have never done this before, so hope I last the course!

cloudengel · 09/12/2025 22:10

I'm going to join if that's ok? My 2026 goal is to start reading again, after pregnancy and life with a baby stopped me reading in 24/25.

War and Peace was one of the few books I finished in 2024, doing a chapter a day. I loved it so much 😅

MonOncle · 10/12/2025 18:55

I’m in! Loved The Count read along this year. I’ve grabbed the kindle penguin version.

RainyDaysAndGlumDays · 10/12/2025 19:16

Have just gone looking for my Wordsworth Classics edition, but am perplexed I cannot find it (most unlike me to get rid of a book). I haven't read it for about 25 years, but loved it. Not sure I'll feel the same about the (interminable) Waterloo descriptions this time. As a fan of the musical, I think the original story just adds so much depth to the characters.

Thanks @Pashazade for the kindle recommendation - have gone for the Penguin Classics, so I can read it on the app during my lunch break.

LuckyMauveReader · 10/12/2025 20:52

I very much enjoyed reading The Count of Monte Cristo on the read along this year. The Dombey reading has fallen short, so I'm quite behind. Hopefully, I will be able to finish the book in time to start this one.

Marking my place.

MotherOfCatBoy · 10/12/2025 21:09

Thanks for organising us @AgualusasL0ver - I’m in! I’ll be joining the French club for this one. Have bought the Folio edition in two volumes.

JollyHostess101 · 10/12/2025 21:24

Oooohh me please!!

MrsWobble4 · 10/12/2025 22:25

My overriding memory having read it a few years ago is that I know far more about the Paris sewers than I ever thought possible. I think I may have shared this with my family as my daughter now lives in Paris and called me the other day to say she’d found the Paris sewer museum and I should go. Enjoy your read!

IlovetoKnitandRead · 11/12/2025 15:54

I have bought my Penguin paperback copy today so I can annotate and scribble as I go along. Then I will treat myself to a lovely hardback edition when I have finished. I loved War and Peace a chapter a day, so very excited for this one.

NorthFaceofthelaundrypile · 12/12/2025 19:27

This is a great idea!
I’ve never seen the show, so shall reward myself with tickets for 2027!

Nookistheplacetobe · 20/12/2025 13:42

This is a new idea to me. I read it many years ago, would love to join in please. I have downloaded the Christine Donougher edition and looking forward to kick off on 1st Jan

Medenagan · 20/12/2025 20:37

This sounds great - I’m in!

VikingNorthUtsire · 20/12/2025 20:57

Ooh yes please. I did an MN W&P readalong a few years ago. I've never seen any of the adaptations of Les Mis and only have the vaguest of ideas of what it's about.

RafaistheKingofClay · 20/12/2025 21:08

I’m in. I might manage to still be here at the end on this one.

Now I just have to work out which box my copy went into when I moved house 😭

MissisBee · 20/12/2025 21:15

I am going to try and join and keep up with this. I have read it twice before and loved it (also loved War and Peace) but that was some years ago and I've completely lost my reading mojo since. A chapter a day seems achievable.
I've a Kindle edition that I've just downloaded onto my phone in preparation - Isabel Hapgood translation.

booksandwool · 20/12/2025 21:38

I'm optimistically planning to join in!
