Could anyone recommend any historical fiction books for me please? Set in the 19th or 20th century ideally.

Cynthia Harrod-Eagles Morland dynasty. Starts way before19th or 20th but goes through to there.

Sparrow92 · 02/08/2025 22:50

That sounds interesting thanks I'll check it out!

Life after Life and A God In Ruins by Kate Atkinson

I wouldn't class Life After Life as historical fiction TBH.

@Sparrow92 my suggestion would be The Cazalet Chronicles by Elizabeth Jane Howard. It is a series of 4 books set between 1937 and 1947.

It was dramatised on TV in 2001.

Suzie Hull in this foreign land- was so vivid!

PermanentTemporary · 02/08/2025 23:10

English Passengers by Matthew Neale
A Civil Contract by Georgette Heyer
Golden Hill by Francis Spufford

Sparrow92 · 02/08/2025 23:17

Thanks! 😃

Gone with the Wind.

Little Women.

The Crimson Petal and the White.

And earlier than you want, but Forever Amber.

Nagginthenag · 02/08/2025 23:37

Olivia Manning Balkan and Levant trilogies. I keep recommending these 😂. Brilliant books.

mamabluestar · 02/08/2025 23:37

The Book of Witching - 1600 century, so much earlier than you mentioned, but I enjoyed reading it

Why not, out of interest? The bulk of it takes place from 1910s to 1940s?

Why not? It's early 20th century, which is what the OP asked for.

I'd recommend Brotherless Night, it won the Women’s Fiction Prize last year bur is set in the 1960s/70s and from then based in Sri Lanka, really good.

RampantIvy · 03/08/2025 06:21

My apologies @Almostwelsh and @thesecondmrsdewinter20 I got the book confused with Love after Love by Ingrid Persaud, which I didn't really enjoy.

I can recommend any book by Sarah Waters. I especially loved Fingersmith.

Sparrow92 · 03/08/2025 16:50

Lots of great suggestions thanks I'll be spoilt for choice 😃

I loved The Crimson Petal and the White and Life After Life.

Does it have to be Historical Fiction or can it be fiction which was contemporary at the time? Asking because David Copperfield is one of my favourite books.

Pachinko is also very good and is set in the 20th Century following a Korean immigrant family in Japan.

Dolamroth · 03/08/2025 18:54

Agreeing with Forever Amber, The Cazalet Chronicles, Kate Atkinson and Crimson Petal and The White.

I would add the Poldark novels, very late 18th century but many of the things they deal with set the scene for the next century. They are really good and there's much more to them than the TV series though it was a very good adaptation.

Thanks! Yes that's absolutely fine, it doesn't matter when they were written 😊 I love David copperfield too.

How about All The Light We Cannot See?

Thanksman · 03/08/2025 19:49

I love Middlemarch. The series on it are excellent too,

Hatty65 · 03/08/2025 19:52

If you like romance and glorious fun, then ANY Georgette Heyer Regency romance is ace. I particularly recommend The Talisman Ring, Frederica or the Grand Sophy for a start.

If you like murder/mystery then Edward Marston wrote a series on The Home Front detective set in 1914-1918. Or his Railway Detective series set in Victorian times.
