When I was younger I was an avid reader, I’ve kind of got out of the habit, but recently I’ve tried a few books and I am really struggling to stay motivated to read them, don’t connect with the characters and I currently have 3 partially read books on the go. I’ve tried a few different genres and I know I hate any kind of fantasy novel. But open to anything else really…

The Names by Florence Knapp. An absolutely outstanding debut novel. Blew me away and I read it in one sitting.

OhGodImBloated · 28/06/2025 12:09

I who have never known men
Tender is the flesh

— both shocking and made me think

Pingiop · 28/06/2025 12:11

Ripe by Sarah Rose Etter - it’s about a woman working in tech and the corruption of a large company and depression. Did take me a while to get into but I loved it.

My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh - you’ll either love this or hate it. But about a female struggling in the world with a complex family based in the early 00s

The Last House on Needless Street by Catroina Ward - psychological horror but if a mind fuck but it kept me guessing with a huge twist. I couldn’t actually stop thinking about the twist for a few days after

The Beach by Alex Garland - better than the film but still great to read

Fantastic Land by Mike Bockove - amusement park meets Lords of the flies

The eyes of the best part by Monika Kim - female rage/ revenge horror

Boy Parts by Eliza Clark - female rage/horror

Penance by Eliza Clark - told as true crime about teenage violence

Not sure if you’d like any of them but look at Good Reads for reviews or Instagram have lots of book rec accounts

Demon copperhead.
Took me ages to get past the first chapter, then I was racing.

Ilovelowry · 28/06/2025 12:12

@GreenBea I have The Names on my summer kindle list for holiday. Good to hear the recommendation.

Read I who have never known men but couldn’t get into Tender is the Flesh, I’m willing to give it another go though.

Also My Dark Vanessa and Three Women both great. I’ll also suggest Tampa but also TW

I have been rereading Tana French’s novels - kind of literary true crime - very gripping and hard to put down

American Dirt

Welcome to Tuga

An old one:
The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, by Steven King

I read it all in one day! Personally it had me gripped from the first page. Little girl lost in the forest, frantic family, survival, creepy stuff (or is it imagination?) fascinating story line.

Bunny by Mona Awad

Love this thread - thanks for all the recommendations x

The latest Strike novel by Robert Galbraith (JK Rowling). I love them all but this is the best one yet. I can't wait for September when the 8th in the series is released.

CatChant · 28/06/2025 12:22

The Ministry of Time by Kaliane Bradley.

Bunny by Mona Awad

I couldn’t get into this at all. Do I just need to stick with it or just bin it?

ReginaChase · 28/06/2025 12:54

The Nickel Boys - Colson Whitehead. Not and easy read but not a single word wasted. Brutal but not gratuitous, a must read. Sorry for sounding like a book cover!

GrumpySparkler · 28/06/2025 13:05

I'm currently reading American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins. I feel like I've been winded every time I put it down (in a good way). Its the first time in ages I've felt like this about a book. I'm going to bed earlier every night just to get more reading time in! 😂

Visiblyabove25 · 28/06/2025 18:48

I found You are Here by David Nicholls really readable & enjoyable

Also, Tomorrow & Tomorrow & Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin

& if you like twisty, crime stuff The Appeal is an easy, fun read

HDready · 28/06/2025 18:51

Another for American Dirt - got me back into reading after a real slump following my first baby. Also raced through Rachel, Again recently if you’ve read Rachel’s Holiday (Marian Keyes).

AltitudeCheck · 28/06/2025 18:58

My Dark Vanessa and American Dirt, both very good. Also recommend, All the Colors of the Dark.

WinterNightStars · 28/06/2025 19:09

Fifty fifty by Steve Cavanagh - had me hooked from the first page

Yourinmyspot · 28/06/2025 19:13

Troubled Blood by Robert Galbraith, really enjoyed it.

Allthesnowallthetime · 28/06/2025 19:14

The Mad Women's Ball by Victoria Mas.
The School for Good Mothers by Jessamine Chan.
