When I was younger I was an avid reader, I’ve kind of got out of the habit, but recently I’ve tried a few books and I am really struggling to stay motivated to read them, don’t connect with the characters and I currently have 3 partially read books on the go. I’ve tried a few different genres and I know I hate any kind of fantasy novel. But open to anything else really…

I just finished the latest Liane Moriarty and LOVED IT.

Me too! Read it in a day! It's called Here One Moment for others reading.

Thank you!
I’ll start looking and adding to my wish list. The only ones I’ve read that have been mentioned were Eleanor Oliphant, which I liked but didn’t love and the Matthew Perry autobiography which I found heartbreaking, especially knowing what was coming.

A Terrible Kindness Jo Browning Wroe. I read it in 48 hours as I had to know what happened to William.

The Nightingale Kristen Hannah

Excellent book. Also Sarah's Key by Tatiana De Rosnay, a similar theme

AncientBallerina · 28/06/2025 23:03

Sleeping Children It’s translated from the French. I couldn’t put it down. Also The Ghosts of Rome, second in a trilogy by Joseph O’Connor on the escape line in the Vatican for Jews POW etc in occupied Rome during WW2.
Older books - The Poisonwood Bible Barbara Kingsolver and even older the Daphne Du Maurier books - Rebecca and My Cousin Rachel

I’m currently about 80% through, listening mainly to the audiobook (love the narrators) but also reading in between on my kindle. Absolutely loving it.

I enjoy TM Logan’s books too, I’m currently half way through the latest one called The Daughter.

I've got my head in the Echo Chamber by John Boyne at the moment. Great fun and also makes some very sharp observations. I feel annoyed whenever my family expect me to interact with them Grin

It's brilliant isn't it. I won't ruin the ending !
Love your name 😂.

Pancakelover1 · 29/06/2025 19:07

I went through a phase of reading a huge bunch of children's classics to my son. There were a lot of great books, but the following two moved me (not just for kids :) ).

Goodnight Mr Tom
The boy in the striped Pyjamas.

randomrandomium · 29/06/2025 19:07

I've recently loved:
Long Bright River by Liz Moore
Betty by Tiffany McDaniel
The Wedding People by Alison Espach
Prophet Song by Paul Lynch

Currently reading The Names as mentioned up thread and really enjoying it.

Another vote for Here One Moment.

I'm working my way through Jane Casey's Maeve Kerrigan series and really enjoying them.

Also 2 books that surprised me and I was struggling to put down were Listen for the Lie by Amy Tintera and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Brontë.

springintoaction321 · 08/07/2025 16:37

Placemarking as some great suggestions here. I'll be keeping an eye out for the new Liane Moriarty one ; always like her books.

BG2015 · 08/07/2025 16:41

I've been reading Elly Griffiths Dr Ruth Galloway books since January. I have 5 left to read and I'm torn between racing through or savouring each one. I plan to read 2 more on holiday. Going to be so sad when I’ve finished them.

American Dirt I also found gripping. I was an emotional wreck reading it.
