Books similar to the Thursday Murder Club…

I’m recovering at home and have a lot of time to read. But I’ve also find in recent year it hard to focus on reading. So I’m alternating. I have plenty of big literary tomes to get though.

Anyway I’m reading the Thursday Murder Club books and I love them! Funny, gentle, a genuine mystery. Are there any other authors/books/series that have that similar feel?

Marlowe Murder Club by Robert Thorogood

Vera wongs unsolicited advice for murders

I didn't particularly like Thursday murder club but this book was what I'd hoped it would be!

I really like The Charity Shop Detective Agency books by Peter Boland.

GMH1974 · 13/04/2025 16:46

I haven't read them but perhaps try Richard Coles' books.

If you understand the Edinburgh/ Glasgow thing 44 Scotland Street series is a great read. Nothing to do with murders just a funny lighthearted read full of characters.

CoastPath · 13/04/2025 17:27

The Three Dahlias by Katy Watson. First in a series. Four novels, so far.

StartingAgainFGS · 13/04/2025 19:13

Gundogday · 13/04/2025 19:15

I was coming back to say The Three Dahlias as well @CoastPath

Try Martin Walker’s Bruno books. About a policeman in the Dordogne. I love them!

ChessieFL · 14/04/2025 20:35

Ian Moore’s Follet Valley series, starting with Death & Croissants.

Coffeeforayear · 14/04/2025 20:39

The Appeal by Janice Hallett is a great book. A good plot with humour.

No don’t bother! I thought Richard Osman’s were bad but Richard Cole’s is waaaay worse!

I’m staying right away from ‘celeb’ authors, I have rarely read a good one.

Moominmama0 · 14/04/2025 20:59

The Dales Detective Series by Julia Chapman are very good. You need to read them in order.

I didn't get on with Richard Coles books.

I know exactly what you mean OP, I alternate between heavier books and what I refer to as chicken soup ones too. I find Stacey Hall ones fit the bill perfectly.

Gobolino80 · 14/04/2025 21:48

I’m reading The Night In Question by Susan Fletcher at the moment and absolutely loving it.

SocialistSally · 14/04/2025 22:09

Thanks! I’m not normally one for celebrity authors, and I avoided the Thursday Murder club for ages. Then I listened to the first one while running and needed something gentle while I’m now recovering from a health thing (and no longer married). I think I like the characters. I find it gentle but not twee. Maybe I’m kidding myself on the twee.

Anthony Horowitz series - 'The word is murder' is the first one - is quite a nice, gently humorous read. It's all a bit meta as the narrator of the book is a fictionalised version of Horowitz.

I've just been checking out some of these suggestions and am laughing at myself thinking that Bingo Hall would be a 1920s upper crust amateur detective!! Too much PG Wodehouse lol.
