Books similar to the Thursday Murder Club…

I’m recovering at home and have a lot of time to read. But I’ve also find in recent year it hard to focus on reading. So I’m alternating. I have plenty of big literary tomes to get though.

Anyway I’m reading the Thursday Murder Club books and I love them! Funny, gentle, a genuine mystery. Are there any other authors/books/series that have that similar feel?

Try T A Williams Armstrong and Oscar series. Set in Tuscany and very gentle . A retired detective and his dog solve murders! I actually love the descriptions of the food and scenery more than anything! Lovely to listen to on audible. Don’t expect high brow literature but if you want something gentle they are perfect!

I think the Elly Griffiths Harbinder Kaur series is similar in a way, but better as all the characters are equally likeable. It's written in the same narrative style where each chapter is through a different character's perspective, and there is a nice mix of ages.

Was just in a bookshop in France and Agatha Raisin seemed to be very popular there. I really like Elly Griffiths writing.

Simon Brett . Village murders series. Mc Breton Agatha Raisin series also Hamish Macbeth

I was going to suggest Simon Brett books. My favourites are the Charles Parris ones - he is a faded unsuccessful actor who investigates murders that seem to happen wherever he goes - funny and a very easy read.

The list of suspicious things has an innocent feel and is very easy to read but is set against the background of the Yorkshire ripper so has a more sinister edge.

I’ve just finished All the Other Mothers Hate Me and I loved it! Has a similar cozy crime vibe

JanesTeddy · 19/04/2025 07:26

I haven't read them but perhaps try Richard Coles' books.

Much better written too!

The Dr Nell Ward series is brilliant. Starts with A Murder of Crows.

Great list of books in here! I am going to look at buying a couple. I'm beginning to spend more time reading than ever before.

QuartzIlikeit · 02/05/2025 15:43

Ive read most of the books mentioned (all enjoyable) & have also really liked the E.V Hunter books - starting with a date to die for. They are the Hopgood hall series.

AuntieDolly · 02/05/2025 16:28

Anthony Horowitz Magpie Murders series, or Bryant & May books by Christopher Fowler throws in a bit of whimsy and London history

Warmhandscoldheart · 07/05/2025 15:46

Benjamin Stevenson's books are worth a read.
