I am an avid reader but keep on choosing duds and really want a bit of escapism. Favourite books I would recommend and enjoyed are:

Perfectly Ordinary People - Nick Alexander
The Quiet end of the world - Lauren James
The last one at the party - Bethany Clift
How to kill your family - Bella Mackie
Lessons in Chemistry - Bonnie Garmus
Sorrow and Bliss - Meg Mason
The Silence of the Lambs - Thomas Harris
Hunger Games books
Alchemy - Rory Sutherland
I'm Glad my Mom died - Jennette McCurdy
You could be so pretty - Holly Bourne

Any have similar tastes that can recommend me something?

Strange Sally Diamond

NebulousDogBollocking · 25/02/2025 10:45

Tick Tock by Simon Mayo - I didn't think it would be my kind of thing but it had me hooked from the start.

Have you tried any of Liane Moriarty's books?

notatinydancer · 25/02/2025 11:00

The Whalebone Theatre - Joanna Quinn
The Nightingale- Kristin Hannah
The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August - Claire North
Water for Fresh Flowers - Valerie Perrin

american dirt by jeanine cummins

Thanks so much. I have read Strange Sally Diamond and agree it’s a great book. I have tried Liane Moriarty but couldn’t get on with it. I’ve just ordered Tick Tock - thanks for the recommendation.

I do read quite a bit so I’ve probably read (or tried) all the best sellers and popular books in the last 5 years. I guess I’m looking for slightly more unknown authors ideally with a slight dystopian theme (I’ve read all the big ones, Wool trilogy, Scythe etc)

Oh thanks just seen a few more recommendations. I’ve read all (and enjoyed them!) but Water for Fresh flowers- will add that to my list.
I really appreciate you all taking the time to post.

Have you read Skin Deep by Liz Nugent? One of my favourites.

Elephantsarenottheonlyfruit · 25/02/2025 13:22

Dystopian: Naomi Alderman (the power/the future) or Emily St John Mandel (any but esp Station 11)

Guardup · 25/02/2025 14:05

@Manchesterbythesea no I’ve not read Skin Deep - that has great reviews so gone to the top of my list- thank you!
@Elephantsarenottheonlyfruit thanks so much for the recommendations of dystopian- I’ve read both those authors books and particularly liked station 11 too.

Have you read Nina Millns's Goddesses @Guardup ? That's the one that sprang to mind when I read your update although I didn't like it at all 😆

Before & After by Andrew Shanahan

Lots of fun! Gripping with heart. It's everything I'd usually avoid in a book but I was hooked from page 1 and I think you might be too. And there's a sequel!

Guardup · 26/02/2025 09:18

@FeathersMcFeather on chapter 4 of before & after - great recommendation- thanks!

I've just finished The Passage, really enjoyed it. If you're a fan of dystopian novels then maybe you've already read it but if not I'd recommend!

Guardup · 26/02/2025 09:42

@LifeInAHamsterWheel oh thanks no I’ve not read that - can I just check it’s by Justin Cronin? I’ll add it to the list!

@Guardup ooh lovely. It's a lot of fun and bonkers but very enjoyable

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 26/02/2025 10:13

Yes, sorry The Passage by Justin Cronin. I've not read many dystopian novels, I really enjoyed Station 11 and now this and it's a series so am looking forward to reading more!

LunaNorth · 26/02/2025 10:15

Go back a bit and try some Octavia Butler? The Parable of the Sower is a great dystopian read.

Santasbigredbobblehat · 26/02/2025 14:02

I’m Sorry You Feel That way. Similar to Sorrow and Bliss.
My Year of Rest and Relaxation.
Margot’s Got Money Problems.
The Wedding People. Alison Espach.

Guardup · 26/02/2025 15:56

@LifeInAHamsterWheel - perfect thanks!

@LunaNorth and @Santasbigredbobblehat These are all new to me so thank you!

This list should keep me busy for a few months- wonderful- I really appreciate you taking the time to recommend x
