Looking for my next read and never really know what I’m in the mood for. Always find a good book from recommendations so lovely mumsnetters tell me that last good book you read to give me ideas.

Recent reads I’ve enjoyed:
weyward
my name is Leon
remarkably bright creatures
the life impossible
Labyrinth
the last murder at the end of the world

So quite varied. I’m sure I’ll be able to find a good one from your ideas. Thank you.

Sigrid Nunez, What Are You Going Through? The latest Almodovar film is based on it, with Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton.

Topbird29 · 11/01/2025 12:20

Just finished remarkably bright creatures. Highlights from last couple of years were American dirt , lessons in Chemistry, and hearts invisible furies. All totally different!

Janeaustenrocks · 11/01/2025 12:23

Still life by Sarah Winman. I just loved it. It's so beautiful.

Neveragain35 · 11/01/2025 12:26

The Bee Sting was my favourite from last year

I also just finished I Hope This Finds You Well, which was very funny and quite sweet.

I really liked dear child romy Housman and one of the CJ Tudor books the drift I think
Valley of the dolls was brilliant as well, my mum kept telling me to read it and eventually I did and begrudgingly had to agree with her excellent choice 😂

Where did my grammar and punctuation disappear to 🤣

BCBird · 11/01/2025 12:34

The People on Platform 5. Nice easy read.

The Observations by Jane Harris

Great fun, very twisty story of a young maid with an unusual employer in Victorian Scotland.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 11/01/2025 13:38

Brooklyn by Colm Toibin

The Hearts Invisible Furies is one of my all time favourite books, John Boyne is a fabulous writer. I know American Dirt is very popular but I found it a bit of a slog and quite repetitive at times

Sewfrickinamazeballs · 11/01/2025 13:55

The measure by Nikki Erlick

purpleme12 · 11/01/2025 13:57

Three Things About Elsie by Joanna Cannon

StuffedFullOfFromage · 11/01/2025 13:57

Demon Copperhead

DustyMaiden · 11/01/2025 14:00

If you like the hearts invisible furies you might like A terrible kindness. Had a similar vibe.

HuaShan · 11/01/2025 14:04

More votes for:
The Bee Sting
Demon Copperhead
Still Life
and adding
The Secret Life of Bees

TinyMouseTheatre · 11/01/2025 22:04

The Unspeakable Acts of Zina Pavlou.

TheOracleatDelphi · 11/01/2025 22:15

Night watching by Tracy Sierra

A total page turner

Hightideattheseaside · 11/01/2025 22:16

Thanks for the recommendations so far! Lots to check out. Only looked into a couple so far but I’m definitely going to give the bee sting a go.

Peter James- I will follow you, I held my breath strung the last chapter!

Strange Sally Diamond.
Its ones of the few books that I have stayed awake to read.

clary · 11/01/2025 23:43

I loved Demon Copperhead so much, what a wonderful book. Five stars for sure.

A couple I have read this year with book clubs are
How to be Both by Ali Smith
Orbital by Samantha Harvey
Gave them both four stars tho Orbital in particular is a densely written book, lyrical and beautiful but more like a poem in prose than a novel. It's 135 pages but feels more like 300. That's fine tho, I don't mind a book being a challenging read. Just don't think (as I did) Oh this will take me a couple of days max :)

CatChant · 11/01/2025 23:57

I have just devoured The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt and adored it. I’m feeling quite bereft now I’ve finished it. For me it was one of those rare books that engulfs you so completely it feels as though you’re living it, not reading it.

SheRa · 12/01/2025 00:02

In Memoriam by Alice Winn

Wasn't a book I'd have typically chosen but it's a WWI love story between 2 soldiers. One of those books that's stayed with me.

frecklejuice · 12/01/2025 00:04

Im just about to finish The House We Grew Up In by Lisa Jewell, really enjoyed it.
