Looking for my next read and never really know what I’m in the mood for. Always find a good book from recommendations so lovely mumsnetters tell me that last good book you read to give me ideas.

Recent reads I’ve enjoyed:
weyward
my name is Leon
remarkably bright creatures
the life impossible
Labyrinth
the last murder at the end of the world

So quite varied. I’m sure I’ll be able to find a good one from your ideas. Thank you.

Unlike others, I adored Secret History by Donna Tartt, was disappointed by Little Friend and skipped through chunks of Goldfinch. Her writing is lyrical and beautiful but can be a bit...dull

I've just finished American Dirt and loved it

I've just been rereading this book as am teaching it. The student adores it too. God, it's good. I read it on publication through a terrible period when my father was dying. It was such a comfort in its unsentimental exploration of grief. I wish Donna Tartt would write more quickly though. We always have to wait so very long for a new book.

Ah, now if you were a Jodi Taylor fan, you'd not have that worry. Can that woman ever write! Different genres too. Amazing writer 😄

@AllyinBerlin I'm glad Donna Tartt's writing was helpful - it is a gift when we read the right book at a difficult time

The Housemaid series by Freida McFadden. There are three and I’m on the last one - would recommend 🙂

I've just finished Three Hours by Rosamund Lupton, which (judging by its cover) I normally would not have gone for if I hadn't been trying to fulfill the "3 books for £1" charity shop deal... Actually had to pause reading to sob towards the end!

Re Donna Tartt: I’m one of those who loved The Goldfinch, but really wasn’t into TSH.

Soldier Sailor by Claire Kilroy. Amazing book about early days of motherhood motherhood. Intense, sad, beautifully written. One of the best novels I’ve ever read about the those first few years.

Orangesarenottheonlyfruit · 17/01/2025 20:09

I've just finished The Safekeep by Yael van de Wouden. It was utterly brilliant. I was put off it by it being on the shortlist for the booker but someone heartily recommended it to me and so I have it a punt. I'm so glad I did as it was atmospheric and fabulous. Also a bit saucy...

Have also recently loved James by Percival Everett
Soldier Sailor, which has already been mentioned and for something totally different The Slow Horses series, which is easy fun.

All the Colours of the Dark - it was epic.

I'm struggling to find a book to fill the void that finishing it has left.

It is the best book ever written in my opinion. I loved it. I’ve just finished Betty I really enjoyed it

Dolamroth · 27/06/2025 22:04

Inspired by the Rather Dated book thread I read The Road to Lichfield and Moon Tiger by Penelope Lively. Both were really good!

Fuckitydoodah · 28/06/2025 10:03

Just saw I was quoted, so I came back on the thread. Whilst I'm here I'm going to recommend two books I enjoyed on a recent holiday. Both very different, but loved them both.

  • The list of suspicious things by Jennie Godfrey.
  • In Memoriam by Alice Winn
keeganface · 28/06/2025 21:09

I loved The List of Suspicious Things . I grew up in Bradford so loved that element too.
I've just finished Flowers for Algernon and loved it.

soberserene · 28/06/2025 22:46

Have just read these three by Nina Stibbe. I’m
a bit addicted to her writing style. It’s like Barbara Comyns, Jeannette Winterston and Helen Fielding:
Love, Nina
Man at the Helm
Went to London, took the dog.

ribbonfox · 28/06/2025 23:17

Bright I Burn - Molly Aitken, based on the life of Alice Kyteler.

Before that, probably In Memoriam

thornbury · 30/06/2025 20:02

Just finished The Husbands, Holly Gramazio - absolutely loved it
