An easy, enjoyable read to get me started

I tend to pick books which are a bit harder going, abd have lost my reading mojo a bit. I dont have heaps of time to dedicate and I think my usual choices need a bit more time than I have.

I'd live recommendations for easy enjoyable reads to get me started again. Open to most things. Thank you!

The Lido by Libby Page is a good read.

Thanks, I've just added to my kindle.

How to Kill Your Family by Bella Mackie is very funny and a very easy read too.

Danceswithweasels · 02/01/2025 09:10

The Salt Path by Raynor Wynn got me back into reading last year, it's a beautiful book about a couple who lose everything and despite one having a life limiting illness, just start walking with a small tent, It's a really uplifting easy read.
There are two books that follow on as well, The Wild Silence and Landlines.

The Pumpkin Spice Cafe. It’s not high end literature by any means of the imagination but it’s a really easy read. I’ve just read it while I’ve been in bed with the flu and am hooked enough to want to read the next one in the series.

The Keeper of Stories and The Secrets of Flowers, both by Sally Page are good too.

Almost finished Rachel Joyce's The Music Shop - what a joy it is! Ideal light and easy read with some real laugh out loud bits.

Chocolately · 02/01/2025 09:30

I like Millie Johnson or Jojo Moyes for a nice enjoyable read. Also, second PP on Sally Page.

Aworldofmyown · 02/01/2025 09:33

Remarkably Bright Creatures.
Leonard & Hungry Paul.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 02/01/2025 09:36

I did enjoy this book but I know others who found it unreadable because of the author's self pity and rage at a situation mainly of her and her husband's own making, and choice to play homeless instead of claiming benefits and living in a flat that wasn't a picturesque old farm. The places they walked through sound beautiful though.

Allnewtometoo · 02/01/2025 11:02

I went to start The Lido last night, and it's showing as "read". Does anyone else do that?

I've read The Salt Path, I did enjoy it, and have got the following up in my ever increasing "to be read" pile

@TheFairyCaravan that sounds ideal thank you. I want to start with a few books that I can get on a read fairly quickly.

Thanks all, will add these to my list.

I start The Hike last night which I found unread on my kindle, 5 chapters in and ok so far.

‘Lessons in Chemistry’, Bonnie Garmus

TheOliveFinch · 02/01/2025 12:12

Frank & Red by Matt Coyne, funny and poignant

Smashingwatermelons · 02/01/2025 12:24

Ive just finished ‘Water’, ‘Earth’ and ‘Fire’ by John Boyne. Flew through them as they are well written and interesting, but only short books.
‘Fire’ especially is not an easy read as it deals with very uncomfortable subjects, but a good book nonetheless.

Easy reads for me are stories that are interesting, not the ‘chic lit’ as they don’t grasp me.

Also really enjoyed ‘Weyward’ by Emilia Hart. i read that in a flash too as I loved the story lines in it.

Rowansiskin · 02/01/2025 12:29

I like Adele Parks books when I need something a bit easier, Just My Luck was one I enjoyed recently. Also Taylor Jenkins Reid, I started with Daisy Jones and the Six

SulkySeagull · 02/01/2025 12:32

Agree with Bella Mackie how to kill your family - such an easy and entertaining read!

yoshiblue · 02/01/2025 12:37

Just finishing The storied life of AJ Fikry. I too have been in a massive reading slump, and I've enjoyed it so much.

RainbowSlimeLab · 02/01/2025 12:38

Fourth Wing is incredibly readable. I could do without the prolonged kissing and sex scenes but the story itself pulls you in.

NoOneKnowsWhoYouAre · 02/01/2025 12:38

Anything by Bill Bryson, funny and entertaining.

For some reason the book Tunnel Vision by Keith Lowe has lived in my head rent free for years. I recently Borough a copy to re read!

RestitutionGranted · 02/01/2025 12:40

I’m reading the Booker Prize at the minute - Orbital. It’s only a slim volume and not taxing per se, but reflective.

DancefloorAcrobatics · 02/01/2025 12:40

I find Jojo Moyes books quite easy to get into... Night Music is one of my favourites.

longtompot · 02/01/2025 13:11

I've got out of the reading habit too. I found reading less taxing books like Richard Osmans Thursday Murder club series a good way to get reading again. I have started reading a local authors crime series which is set in the city I live in which has also been a great way to get back to reading.
A bit of a meatier book (for me) that my ds bought me for my birthday was A Broken Light by Joanne Harris which I started really well, but have stalled over Christmas, but it has been on my mind so will get back to it soon.

Allnewtometoo · 02/01/2025 13:56

@Smashingwatermelons I'm the same, I can't cope with books that are too...I don't know, formulaic? The typical chick lit sorts. I still like a good story and something to grab me.

I have some of these suggestions already which is great, thanks all so much!

The Appeal by Janice Hallett is very much a page turner.

WGACA · 02/01/2025 14:04

Jane Fallon's books are great easy reads.

catkatcatkat · 02/01/2025 14:04

The Flatmate by Beth O’Leary, it’s kind of chick lit but really good chick lit!
