Books you finished in a "one-r"

I can't remember the last time I obsessively read a book in one sitting (obv with breaks for basic bodily needs). I long for that all-consuming desire again. I'm sure it will come again with a book I least expect. Meanwhile, what were the books that wholly consumed your waking hours?

I regrettably don’t have the time these days to read a book in one sitting but Hilary Mantel and Margaret Atwood are the writers that I find most addictive/compelling. And James Baldwin.

FuckItItsFine · 30/12/2024 19:34

Not exactly high literature but for me it was The Girl on the Train about 3 years ago.

AudiobookListener · 30/12/2024 19:37

The Road.

I wasn't exactly enjoying it, but it was totally unputdownable and I just wanted to get it over with.

Ribenaberry12 · 30/12/2024 19:39

A few months ago - was a cheapo thriller I picked up a in a charity shop - Dead Woman walking by Sharon Bolton. Was perfect escapism.

SheilaFentiman · 30/12/2024 19:41

Karin Slaughter books

WinterFoxes · 30/12/2024 19:41

I stayed up all night reading Tenant of Wildfell Hall a few weeks ago. I'd never read it and it is just gripping. Not had that happen in years

LunaNorth · 30/12/2024 19:43

I read The Handmaid’s Tale in one sitting as a student.
I think I did the last Harry Potter in one go when it came out as well 😳

Puppupandaway · 30/12/2024 19:45

The Lisa Jewell books I've recently read have been unputdownable.

Jackie Collins....on a sun lounger..basking.

cansu · 30/12/2024 20:07

Some of the Harry potters, the Brighton books by Elly Griffiths, some of the Strike books. I also love Sara Paretsky especially the earlier one and devoured these.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 30/12/2024 20:07

Fingersmith by Sarah Waters stayed up til the early hours once I had started

MissBattleaxe · 30/12/2024 20:09

The Running Grave by Robert Galbraith was book heroin.

Windthebloodybobbinup · 30/12/2024 20:10

The bee sting was the last- way to ping to read in one sitting but I kept going back and back to it every chance I had till it was done!

Supersimkin7 · 30/12/2024 20:10

Pineapple street. Three Society New Yorker sisters not doing very much - rave reviews, schlocky and escapist but funny and sharp, loved it.

RubyDarke · 30/12/2024 20:12

I spent the whole of yesterday reading a Golden Age WWII murder mystery-Green for Danger by Christianna Brand. I loved the wartime medical setting and small cast of suspects and it is very well plotted- I usually work the solution out early on but was thoroughly deceived by some excellent red herrings.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 30/12/2024 20:16

The Big Beano Colouring Book, although not exactly a 'one-r'.
I'll admit there was a lull during the process when I sent Mum out to buy me a replacement red, and a yellow crayon.

MissRoseDurward · 30/12/2024 20:17

Dorothy Dunnett, Checkmate. Spent a whole day reading it when it came out, desperate to know how it all ended.

And the last Harry Potter when it was first published, because I was going to be travelling the next day and was afraid I might overhear people on the train or in a cafe talking about it, with spoilers. Otherwise I probably would have taken more time.

Ah now see, I couldn't get on with something like that. I do still buy the Beano (a fiver!!) but I'm more of a paint by numbers woman than a colouring in one.

Oryx & Crake by Margaret Atwood - completely horrifying and compulsive. In my opinion far superior to the Handmaid's Tale (although I do love that book as well!). I like to re-read books, and Oryx & Crake regularly gets pulled out. It's the first in the MadAddam trilogy, and all 3 books are brilliant.

Hope you find another book to get obsessed with from everyone's suggestions on here! There's nothing better than that feeling when you can't put a book down.

There was a b&w film of that. Alastair Sim, I think. Used to turn up on tv quite often. Try YouTube, a lot of old films on there.

GRCP · 30/12/2024 20:35

Each of John Boyne's Elements books (first 3 have been released so far)

GRCP · 30/12/2024 20:36

In the past, The Colour Purple, A Child Called It and Flowers in the Attic were all one sitting for me!

GrouchyKiwi · 30/12/2024 20:38

Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein.

Everythingaches · 30/12/2024 20:40

Frankie by Graham Norton. Read it in one day over this last weekend.
