I can't remember the last time I obsessively read a book in one sitting (obv with breaks for basic bodily needs). I long for that all-consuming desire again. I'm sure it will come again with a book I least expect. Meanwhile, what were the books that wholly consumed your waking hours?

Weyward, by Emilia Hart.

I absolutely loved Weyward.

Completely lowering the tone but all Sweet Valley High is on Kindle so I've been gently making my way though them - absolutely dreadful but in a compelling way!

They're all about 100 pages and can be read in about two hours - perfect for pure escapism!

Anything by Kathryn croft, Andrea Mara, Lisa Jewell or Fiona Gibson. I remember rereading one of the shopaholic books and had the most enjoyable night up!

NSCat · 31/12/2024 10:31

The Murder Game by Tom Hindle. A little predictable but such an easy and enjoyable read!

I spent the whole of yesterday reading a Golden Age WWII murder mystery-Green for Danger by Christianna Brand.

There was a b&w film of that. Alastair Sim, I think. Used to turn up on tv quite often. Try YouTube, a lot of old films on there.

Thanks I will do! I love old films and struggle to find where they are available.

I spent the whole of yesterday reading a Golden Age WWII murder mystery-Green for Danger by Christianna Brand. I loved the wartime medical setting and small cast of suspects and it is very well plotted- I usually work the solution out early on but was thoroughly deceived by some excellent red herrings.

Have you seen the film? It's good fun but I don't know if it's that similar to the book.

Ooh I see I'm not the first to say this!

I’ve just read Tell Me Everything by Elizabeth Stroud pretty much in one go. Perhaps one of the best books I’ve ever read.

flatsevenup · 10/01/2025 08:12

Strange Sally Diamond by Liz Nugent was the one book I couldn't put down.

I loved that book too

akissbeforebed · 10/01/2025 08:39

Before the Coffee gets Cold - very short book but so readable.
Where the Crawdads Sing - read during a three day power cut so very little else to do.

I am reading this on Borrowbox (as of yesterday) on the strength of recommendations here.

So just to confirm ...

Yep - I'll probably finish today as over halfway through in an afternoon. Thanks all 😀. It's always nice to find a new author too - so will be on the lookout for other books by her.

Tare · 12/01/2025 07:22

In Memoriam by Alice Winn
The Bee Sting by Paul Murray
Standard Deviation by Katherine Heiny
Everyone is Still Alive by Cathy Rentzenbrink

leafybrew · 12/01/2025 07:28

Also love a Stephen King book. Best one for quick read - Misery

and a lot longer - The Stand - but some parts of that still think of now...creepy

I've reserved The Bee Sting by Paul Murray but won't get it until end of January.

Tarquinthecat · 28/02/2025 16:50

Robots' Rebellion by David Icke.

And when I reached the end, I turned back to page 1 and read it through again.

Frangywangywoowah · 01/03/2025 00:12

Today.
Fire by John Boyne. What a read!

MedusaAndHerFavourites · 01/03/2025 00:14

Dorothy Dunnett, Checkmate. Spent a whole day reading it when it came out, desperate to know how it all ended.

And the last Harry Potter when it was first published, because I was going to be travelling the next day and was afraid I might overhear people on the train or in a cafe talking about it, with spoilers. Otherwise I probably would have taken more time.

I can’t remember which of the later Harry Potters it was, but I’d happened to be passing a Waterstones that had opened late to sell it, picked up a copy and told the entire (slightly pissed) carriage in the last Victoria line tube that JKR had killed off Hagrid.

I know Dan Brown gets a bad press but his books are like heroin! So pacy and addictive! I also love anything Clare Douglas writes.
