50 Books challenge - 2024 roundup

RomanMum · 07/12/2024 16:06

Hello 50 bookers! Here's a separate thread to gather together our top recommendations from the year. Please post your final lists, or just your bolds if you prefer. If you’re posting the full lists just a reminder to please bold your favourites, and italicise the books you wouldn’t even pass on to your worst enemy.

I'll come back later in December with mine!

Thanks @RomanMum, great work! When the Dust Settles has been sitting on my kindle a long time, I really should get round to it.

PermanentTemporary · 06/01/2025 21:48

Superb stuff @RomanMum that is some job! I love the Bloody Boring Butler Prize. And I love the way these threads evolve.

Thanks @RomanMum, great work! When the Dust Settles has been sitting on my kindle a long time, I really should get round to it.

It’s really good - and very readable, so although obviously the subject matter is harrowing, it doesn’t feel at all a ‘heavy’ read, if that makes sense.

MamaNewtNewt · 06/01/2025 22:14

I may have to start a petition to have the Bloody Boring Butler award renamed to Butler / Narrater of one of the greatest works of modern literature award 😉

Wow @RomanMum what a fantastic summary, I love it! Thank you so much!

Listing the marmite books (aka the BBB award nominees) is a great idea. I haven't read all of them, but the ones I have read I do have strong feelings about.

Happy New Year everyone and here's to another year of reading and animated online conversation!

DesdamonasHandkerchief · 07/01/2025 00:48

Thanks for doing that @RomanMum, really interesting to see what was liked and disliked. Also adding some titles to my tbr pile on the back of this.

highlandcoo · 07/01/2025 01:43

Thanks so much for completing that mammoth task @RomanMum

I have a soft spot for Paper Cup so really pleased to see it in the top fiction reads Smile

I'm not a big non-fiction reader but tempted to explore the top titles of last year now.

StrangewaysHereWeCome · 07/01/2025 12:19

Yes, huge thanks @RomanMum . I definitely agree with @highlandcoo that I'll use these recommendations to inspire my non fiction choices.

StrangewaysHereWeCome · 07/01/2025 12:21

And I'll gladly join @MamaNewtNewt on the Butler Reputation Rehabilitation Committee Grin

Thanks for all your hard work @RomanMum, I'm now even more determined to read a couple of the Women's Prize titles which made it into the most popular books of 2024.

Bloody Boring Butler award 🤣 brilliant!

Thanks so much for doing this @RomanMum , really interesting. Think I'll be removing The Maiden from my TBR list.

I loved The Maiden 🙈 It was very divisive tho!

Thank you @RomanMum for the hard work. I have read most of the fiction top 10, but couldn’t really have predicted even the top 3. I have screenshotted so I can keep up throughout the year.

Thanks @RomanMum, great work! When the Dust Settles has been sitting on my kindle a long time, I really should get round to it.

I second what @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie said. It’s a quick read, not that long and doesn’t feel difficult, despite the subject matter. I think a lot of us would like to be Lucy’s best friend. She is my heroine 🥰

RomanMum · 12/01/2025 15:54

Thanks guys! It was a mammoth task but worth it. The fictions were largely as expected but there were a few curved balls on the list (even some there that I've read 😁) . I've had When the Dust Settles on my wish list for several months, on the strength of these results I might actually get it.

Looking forward to continued book (mostly) chat over the next year! 📚
