The Olive Tree by Lucinda Riley. It’s fab.
Think I’ll be reading more of hers in the future!

MissyB1 · 23/03/2025 15:34

Just finished Three Days in June by Anne Tyler - brilliant!!
Now reading Perfect Match by Jodi Picoult, it's OK but I'm spoilt by Anne Tyler's brilliant book! 😁

Withering Heights. Forgot to find another book at the library so chose one I already had when I finished my last one. Forgot how much I like this book.

I’ve read all the Lucinda Riley books and enjoyed them all. I’m quite envious you’ve got them all to still read!

I gave up on "The Inmate" with probably half the book to go. I found it predictable and not very well written. Life's too short to carry on with a book you're not enjoying and it's not like I had to read it for school or anything! Still, I feel guilty.

I immediately started on "I who have never known men" and devoured it within a couple of days. Beautifully written and so thought-provoking.

It was bleak though so to shake off that feeling I'm now reading "Remarkably bright creatures" and loving it.

The Seven Sisters series is next on my list!

Bestevercatmum · 23/03/2025 17:52

Sorry, that was in response to Yourinmyspot!!

Sunnycats · 23/03/2025 21:15

Just finished All The Broken Places by John Boyne and it was so moving I'm not sure what to read next that can top it!

Post marking. I haven't read in months and deeply miss it. Thanks

I'm reading Beau Geste, a book written at the turn of the 20th century. I read it when I was 13 and always wanted to reread it - found a copy by chance in a second hand bookshop. Need something light and fluffy and modern next.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 23/03/2025 21:37

I've just finished Theophila Pratt's Unveiled. I have been reading a lot of books about various religions and cults of late. My mother would be telling me that I read "too serious" things if I still lived at home!

I have around 40-50 books on my 'To Be Read' piles and I'm unsure of which one to choose next! I have everything from the Eve of Man trilogy to The Humanure Handbook to read, so there's plenty of choice in between 😁

Lessons in chemistry. Great start and my sister recommended it.

Snap! About 3/4 of the way through, really enjoying it.

SparklyBrickViper · 26/03/2025 20:34

The Canterbury Cullings - Anwen John.
Debut novel, great set of characters and a good story.

JeanGenieJean · 26/03/2025 20:40

Nora Webster by Colm Toibin. I enjoyed both Brooklyn and Long Island.

Whatwouldnanado · 26/03/2025 20:45

Just finished a Daphne DuMaurier i didn’t know existed The Parasites and moved on to Christmas Pudding by Nancy Mitford which I’d also never heard of before. Some good ideas in this thread.

A Man from the North - Arnold Bennett's first novel (1898). Pleasant, but he hadn't quite found his voice yet: it has none of the power of Anna of the Five Towns or These Twain or Riceyman Steps or even Imperial Palace.

I’ve never ventured into his earlier work. In fact I only read him in the first place because I wondered if Woolf had been unfair! But I love Anna of the Five Towns and Hilda Lessways in particular.

Rae36 · 26/03/2025 20:55

I've just finished Rose Nicolson by AndrewGreig. It was recommended on a thread here about historical Scottish novels or something like that. I loved it so much. I'm half reading a random pick from the library called Windmill Hill but I'm not very enthusiastic about it because I enjoyed my last read so much. It always takes me a while to get into something new if I've loved the book I've just finished. If that makes sense....

tobee · 27/03/2025 21:43

@OrangePerfume yes I sobbed a little at the end of Any Human Heart. Logan as a young man reminded me very much of ds! (Maybe everyone thinks that? 😃)

Currently reading Free by Lea Ypi about a young girl living in Albania. The second half of the book is when communism falls when she is 11. The book is autobiography, I've nearly finished it and very strongly recommend it.

None of this is true by Lisa Jewell, loving it so far 📚

Great twists heading your way!

Trying to read Demon Copperhead, gave up half through.
American Dirt, gave up
Still Life, gave up!

Oh @Everythingaches I’ve tried Demon Copperhead and American Dirt and gave up on them both too. All the Colours of the Dark was another one I couldn’t get in to either. It was far too long winded.

I’ve just listened to The Drowning Women and Both of You on Audible/spotify audiobooks and they were both pretty good. No listening hours/credits left for a couple of weeks now so a trip to the charity shop for a bargain book is needed.

Everythingaches · 28/03/2025 06:55

Yes I just gave up on colours of the dark too, went on and on.

PizzaNinja · 28/03/2025 08:33

I’m reading The Sunshine Man by Emma Stonex. It’s quite bleak - which I expected- but there’s some breathtakingly beautiful prose that I’ve been blown away by. I have a small suspicion that the end is going to go somewhere I don’t want it to go, *if it does, I will have been thoroughly impressed by the journey there.

*I will come back and update if the ending’s a bit naff 🫣
