I've just started House of Leaves, which I know is going to be a complicated big deal, so I have saved it for my post surgery period, when I am stuck to the sofa.
I fully expect to have to go through it at least twice, to pick everything out.
So far, I am hooked.

I've just read another of her books. Is it Kate Grenville?

Leaves was good as is

Restless Dolly Maunder

suburburban · 23/11/2024 17:17

Now reading Emma Donoghue book in California which is also good

Ladyof2024 · 23/11/2024 17:17

I am reading a book which I wrote myself. It is the final proofreading before it goes to the printer.

I'm reading Creation Lake by Rachel Kushner - it was a present (Booker prize short listed). It's such a strange book, I'm not loving it tbh, though only a third through. There is a lot of recounting of one of the characters' theories on early man, and not much actually happening so far.

I'm re-reading the Secret History - absolutely nothing has grabbed me recently so gone back to an old favourite

I haven't read the Secret History yet, but read one of Donna Tartt's other novels, the Goldfinch, and that is absolutely brilliant.

Ribenaberry12 · 23/11/2024 17:24

I’ve been in a reading slump for months and can’t get out of it. Following for inspiration.

newyear2024 · 23/11/2024 17:27

None of this is true by Lisa Jewell, loving it so far 📚

mathanxiety · 23/11/2024 17:45

An interesting biography of Janis Joplin, by her sister Laura.

Trying to read Demon Copperhead, gave up half through.
American Dirt, gave up
Still Life, gave up!

Whoops quoted the wrong post - meant that for thd person who's reading a lot of Ken Follett

Avoid Never with the current political environment!

nobodysdaughter · 23/11/2024 21:24

'Tis by Frank McCourt, bit late to the party, but having read Angela's Ashes, I can certainly see what all the fuss is about.

TheWitchwithNoName · 23/11/2024 21:30

The Navigators Children by Tad Williams. Highly recommend the series if you like fantasy

Wintering by Katherine May and Tom Lake by Ann Patchett.

About to order Orbital… I really liked In Ascension by Martin MacInnes and hoping it’s similar

What do you think about Wintering. I was wondering about getting it

After a long run of detective stories, I am starting to re-read The Last Battle by CS Lewis. It involves a very unintelligent donkey pretending to be Aslan who is controlled/manipulated by an ape. It is so long since I last read it I can't remember the plot properly but I'm interested in seeing if there are parallels with Trump being voted in again!

DancefloorAcrobatics · 23/11/2024 21:39

Currently reading Daughter of Fire by Sofia Robleda. It's, ok but feels a bit simplistic.
I am saying this after reading Breaking News by Frank Schärzig. Not only is it in German but also quite complex... took me ages to finish!

Tcateh · 23/11/2024 21:56

I hated The Wintering, I so liked the sound of it.
Needed a place to find solace but just found it didn't reach anywhere.

Went and read the reviews after about 3 chapters as I thought is it just me who's not getting this and I wasnt alone.

Shame

40somethingme · 23/11/2024 22:33

11.22.63 by Stephen King.
Over 700 pages to go. I love King so it’s a treat.

PizzaNinja · 23/11/2024 23:08

The Three Lives of Cate Kay by Kate Fagan. It feels like a slow burner, I’ve gotten 89 pages in without much effort, so it’s definitely grabbed me. It’s jumping from different characters and time frames, so I’m surprised I’m into it - my focus has been rubbish recently. Lesbian coming out (or not) tale so far, but there’s much more going on.

UnctuousUnicorns · 24/11/2024 00:46

I'm currently reading (on paperback) Chris Skidmore's Richard III biography
I'm also reading, on the Kindle app on my phone,

The New Girl at St. Chads by Angela Brazil
The Whistling by Rebecca Netley
Firelight and Frost (short stories ) by J.T. Croft

I'm also listening to, via the Libby app from my library:

The Last House on The Cliff by Anne Wynn Clark

and on the BBC Sounds app, Wuthering Heights, read in full by Susan Jameson. It's my first encounter with the book since I first read it 39 years ago aged fifteen.

GoodGollyMsMolly · 24/11/2024 00:59

Lessons in chemistry. Great start and my sister recommended it.

thighboilouch · 24/11/2024 01:11

I'm rereading Salems Lot by Stephen King. I last read it 10 years ago, and it terrified me then but I loved it!

Lovelyview · 24/11/2024 17:16

Wolf Hall. Finding it enjoyable but not gripping. Which I really like. I often read books which keep me up half the night, reading until I feel a bit ill. I think knowing the plot probably helps me to slow things down and enjoy the writing.
