If I loved Demon Copperhead...

... looking for recommendations for something to put on my Kindle before I go away this afternoon! The brief is very well written, but engrossing (think Demon Copperhead!). I was thinking of either Miranda July's All Fours (but it's expensive on Kindle) or Hello, Beautiful (but have read really mixed reviews). Any other ideas? Thanks!

Some books and authors I like:
Demon Copperhead
The Bee Sting
The Cazalet Chronicles
Sorrow and Bliss
Restless Dolly Maunder
All My Mothers
Dictionary of Lost Words
Lessons in Chemistry
The Whalebone Theatre
Hamnet
Shuggie Bain
Deborah Levy
Maggie O'Farrell
Colm Toibin
Rachel Cusk (although have to be in the right mood!)

Ones that I've found a bit meh or actively dislike
Still Life (it just hasn't grabbed me!)
Yellowface
Wolf Hall (have tried several times and I can't stick at it)
Neopolitan Novels (sorry!)
Island of Missing trees
Sally Rooney
Jessie Burton

This is such a good thread. I just finished Demon copperhead a few weeks ago and I also struggled with Wolf Hall AND I used to love Sebastian Faulks and hated it when I attempted a re-read and I love Miranda July and Sarah Waters. Sadly I have nothing to say that hasn’t already been said except maybe The God of Small Things or Americanah or The Parasites which is my fave Du Maurier but I don’t really know why. I think The Secret History is the best Donna Tartt. I really liked the poisonwood bible. The audiobook of it is very good.
Going to bookmark this thread for when I’ve got more time.

Oh I LOVED God of Small Things when I read it many years ago. I tried her more recent one a few years ago and couldn't get into it though (Ministry of Utmost Happiness)

You are me! Exactly the same things.
I had such high hopes after the God of small things, which I adored, but no.

I’m also currently reading Fleishman is in Trouble as a result of this thread!
I have a long list to get through now so thanks for all the great recommendations.
The new Abraham Verghese is good - not as amazing as his first but pretty great.

HippyKayYay · 25/11/2024 22:19

I watched the Fleischman is in Trouble tv adaptation, so fear that I couldn't read the book now (I really can't do it that way round). The adaptation is good though!

Can I just add a couple who I haven't notin here? Sorry if they are there and I'm repeating
Katherine Heiney - early morning riser is great.
Anything by Mary Lawson and Ann Pratchett
And I also love a writer called Courtney Sullivan
The recommendations above are great

Onlyonekenobe · 26/11/2024 18:02

Tana French, The Witch Elm

Some great books mentioned here. Good to have other recommendations, thank you all.

Can I add:
Standard Deviation by Katherine Heiney
Behind the Scenes at The Museum by Kate Atkinson (old but great)
Freakslaw by Jane Flett. (Unlike anything else I've read.)
The Queen of Bloody Everything by Joanna Nadin
The Paper Palace by Miranda Cowley Heller
When All Is Said by Anna Griffin
A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara (heartwrenching and not for everyone)
Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro
Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons

And almost anything by Kristin Hannah.

I haven't read any of her others. I got a sample of Poisonwood Bible, but it didn't grab me for some reason. I'll try again

One of my favourite books, keep going!!

I've just read The Marriage Portrait by Maggie O'Farrell and really enjoyed it.

@HippyKayYay Just returning to this memorable thread to recommend The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. It's about as different to Demon Copperhead as it's possible to be, but I loved it and wanted to share the joy ...

For anyone who likes Colm Toibin's Brooklyn and Long Island I think Donal Ryan's The Spinning Heart and Queen of Dirt Island are great. I also loved Demon Copperhead and her less well know Flight Behaviour.

So many loved books here. I recommend Betty by Tiffany McDaniel.

netflixfan · 18/01/2025 19:23

Anything by Donna Tart.
