If I loved Demon Copperhead...

HippyKayYay · 13/11/2024 14:35

... looking for recommendations for something to put on my Kindle before I go away this afternoon! The brief is very well written, but engrossing (think Demon Copperhead!). I was thinking of either Miranda July's All Fours (but it's expensive on Kindle) or Hello, Beautiful (but have read really mixed reviews). Any other ideas? Thanks!

Some books and authors I like:
Demon Copperhead
The Bee Sting
The Cazalet Chronicles
Sorrow and Bliss
Restless Dolly Maunder
All My Mothers
Dictionary of Lost Words
Lessons in Chemistry
The Whalebone Theatre
Hamnet
Shuggie Bain
Deborah Levy
Maggie O'Farrell
Colm Toibin
Rachel Cusk (although have to be in the right mood!)

Ones that I've found a bit meh or actively dislike
Still Life (it just hasn't grabbed me!)
Yellowface
Wolf Hall (have tried several times and I can't stick at it)
Neopolitan Novels (sorry!)
Island of Missing trees
Sally Rooney
Jessie Burton

I've enjoyed some on your list, and have several of the others in my TBR pile!
So I suggest The Hearts Invisible Furies by John Boyne.

Edited

That's a brilliant book.

I also loved The Star of the Sea

A fine balance - Rohinton Mistry

Amazing book!

MyCatHatesSandals · 23/11/2024 18:08

Piranesi by Susanna Clarke. A small masterpiece.

foreverbasil · 23/11/2024 18:13

Some of the more recent Isabel Allende books... Long Petal of the Sea, The Wind knows my name

You are my literary twin. I love Elizabeth Strout.

SuperGinger · 23/11/2024 18:18

The Poisonwood Bible stayed with me a long time. It was hard but worth it.

I also really rate Siri Husdevdt and Percival James.

levantine · 23/11/2024 18:36

I love Siri Hustvedt @SuperGinger. I think What I Loved might be my favourite book

frick · 23/11/2024 18:42

@Ochrer … I think it was a bit of a slow start (from what my perimenopausal has retained 😂)….. I think for me it really got going about a chapter in… it kind of spirals into tragic comedic madness.

Your taste is mine!
Have you tried Sarah Waters? Elizabeth Stout? Claire Chambers? Sebastian Faulks?

I LOVE Sarah Waters. Nightwatch is one of my favourite books. Elizabeth Stout is a wonderful writer, but I find her books a bit depressing.
Sebastian Faulks I loved when I was younger, but now I really can't bear his writing as I think it really isn't very good anymore.
Claire Chambers I haven't read, but will look up, thanks

This thread has been amazing for ideas! The most important element of a book for me is how talented a writer the author is. I can forgive a slightly poor storyline if the writing is fabulous but not the other way around and I feel I have been given lots to go on from this thread.

HippyKayYay · 24/11/2024 21:38

Same @ElvenElf - Rachel Cusk's books often have virtually no story, but her writing is pretty amazing (although I do have to be in the right mood. I much preferred Second Place to Transit too)

And I'm so glad this thread is a source of inspiration to others too! Keep the suggestions coming, I'm loving this and keeping a long list of to-reads

Oh thank you, I will persevere!

Love your list. Definitely recommend Hello Beautiful especially for a holiday. Has anyone said Elizabeth Strout yet? Read the Lucy Barton ones in order ideally. Excellent.

I'm currently glued to Fleisgman is in Trouble.

I think you will like Rebekah Makkai as well. She has several novels I like them all.

RosemaryRabbit · 24/11/2024 21:51

Sorry I've realised I've repeated others comments.

I would say all the Nina Stibbes, love them. Again a bit better if in order probably but I didn't.

Cazziebo · 24/11/2024 21:56

Elizabeth Strout's The Burgess Boys reminds me of Demon Copperhead. I'm half way through and can't put it down.

And yes - agree with everyone that Rohinton Mistry's A Fine Balance is a superb read.

I think it's already been mentioned but I think The Little Friend by Donna Tartt would fit the bill. I much preferred it to Secret History and the some of the characters could happily exist in the Demon Copperhead universe.

Arseynal · 24/11/2024 22:26

This is such a good thread. I just finished Demon copperhead a few weeks ago and I also struggled with Wolf Hall AND I used to love Sebastian Faulks and hated it when I attempted a re-read and I love Miranda July and Sarah Waters. Sadly I have nothing to say that hasn’t already been said except maybe The God of Small Things or Americanah or The Parasites which is my fave Du Maurier but I don’t really know why. I think The Secret History is the best Donna Tartt. I really liked the poisonwood bible. The audiobook of it is very good.
Going to bookmark this thread for when I’ve got more time.

Americana is great, I also liked purple hibiscus and half a yellow sun by the same author.

A thousand splendid suns by Khaled Hosseini is astonishing. In several ways.
