Can you tell me the law book that wowed you?

I have to provide a book each for 6 people. Has to be fiction. All are readers. Aged 23 to 65. All have varied interests-except one, who is a history nut who likes "war" stuff. Two like feminist literature. One like spies.

Not too heavy or too long because they are for reading over Christmas. But not too light either. What's the last book you loved? Oh, and paperback, please?

Ah, shit. LAST book, not law book!

Do you mean courtroom drama by law book?

Ah, shit. LAST book, not law book!

Constitutional and administrative law 🤣

eurochick · 13/11/2024 09:53

Chitty on Contract?

😀

SR71Blackbird · 13/11/2024 09:54

Ohhhh. I was thinking Eve Was Framed or Tort & Restitution

Edingril · 13/11/2024 09:55

I want fictional law books please, sorry op but great typo! Even if unintentionally done

thereisamouseinthehouse · 13/11/2024 10:19

The title made me laugh.
Now I've realised you're not after something like Secret Barrister or a legal textbook, some that might tick the box are

The Alice Network
Ben Macintyre writes easily accessible accounts of historic events
The Shardlake series is always excellent
The Silent Patient is a disturbing and therefore very good psychological thriller

StringOrNothing · 13/11/2024 10:23

The Ministry of Time (actually I heard it on Book at Bedtime rather than reading it cover to cover, but I loved it).

Look at Robert Harris’ books - there are a few that might suit your criteria.

Fozzleyplum · 13/11/2024 10:58

Smith and Hogan's "Criminal Law" 😉

SabrinaThwaite · 13/11/2024 12:08

All The Light We Cannot See might tick a few boxes?

SabrinaThwaite · 13/11/2024 12:11

And I am Pilgrim by Terry Hayes was a good read, but it’s very long (although lots of short chapters with cliffhangers that make you keep reading on).

Lovelyview · 14/11/2024 22:19

Slow Horses for the spies enthusiast. I read the first one for a book group and we enjoyed it but felt it took a while to get going. Apparently the later ones are better.

Pinkruler · 15/11/2024 13:47

Non fiction- The Psychopath Test by Jon Ronson .
Funny, informative and very cleverly written and thought provoking.

HDready · 15/11/2024 13:50

I really liked the appeal by Janice Hallett - murder mystery in an epistolary style.

GingerLiberalFeminist · 15/11/2024 14:28

Kindred by Octavia Butler last wowed me.

A bit more pulp fiction would be Stephen King's 11.23.63 which is a fictionalisation/a bit woo about Kennedy assasination

Sunbeam18 · 15/11/2024 14:47

Tomorrow and Tomorroe and Tomorrow

Scout2016 · 17/11/2024 10:33

Femist ish -
Confessions of A Failed Southern Lady - Florence King, lent to sister who also loved it
The Vet's Daughter- Barbara Comyns. Bit dark in places

Loved and lent to a friend who loved it too - The White Woman On The Green Bicycle - Melissa Roffey. I liked Mermaid of Black Conch by her, but not as much although I think opinion is usually the other way round.

Political slant - Easy Meat - Rachel Trezise
I really enjoyed The Rotters Club - Jonathan Coe as a lightish re-read this year.

I gave a friend into war novels This Thing of Darkness by Harry Thompson and it was his book of the year but I've not read it as not my bag. It is long but a lot of war novels are so he wasn't fazed.

House of Glass

covetingthepreciousthings · 17/11/2024 10:35

I Who Have Never Known Men - Jacquline Harpman

It's quite short, and the first book in years that I finished in about a day. I think about it most days and still wonder about it. Would make good discussion!

All The Light We Cannot See might tick a few boxes?

This is very good

Scout2016 · 17/11/2024 10:48

Sorry @CurlewKate do you want one book you can give to 6 different people?
Or 6 different books? Think I misunderstood the brief.

PuddledDuck · 17/11/2024 22:48

I think The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah ticks all of your boxes! Great book.

Hodge00079 · 17/11/2024 23:01

Bobby’s War, Lily’s War or Hannah’s War by Shirley Mann. Think Bobby’s War is my favourite. The stories overlap.

TeaHagTeaBag · 17/11/2024 23:07

The Searcher by Tana French. Excellent characters and some very strong women. Literary detective fiction. Its sequel, the Hunter is also very good.
