I'm trying to broaden what I read and I have never read any Terry Pratchett - where on earth would I start with him ? He seems to have so many that are linked but I'm not sure what the starting point is ? Thanks guys x

I always love Pyramids or Soul Musc as starters, possibly Mort. All totally standalone and brilliant.

I’ve just started reading them all again from scratch with my daughter (10). It has been over 20 years since I read some of the early ones and I’m really enjoying revisiting them!

I think he was a fab author, hope you enjoy him OP! Neil Gaiman is another a good one to move onto afterwards if you like TP!

Gaiman has allegations of sexual abuse levelled at him, I know it is possible to separate the person from the body of work but I struggle to read his work knowing this.

Pudmyboy · 07/11/2024 12:17

Also, though a rare voice on this thread, I enjoyed his early Rincewind novels!
But Mort is my favourite. Have the DVD of Hogfather but am thinking I want the book now.

kikisparks · 07/11/2024 12:23

I started with Mort and that was good. I don’t like the first two books as the style is very different but I love all the others.

Forksup · 07/11/2024 12:32

@Pudmyboy I like the Rincewind novels too! I work in academia so enjoy the setting.

On the Gaiman topic, I enjoyed their joint work. But then found books written by Gaiman alone to be really uncomfortable and misogynistic, with female characters either some kind of sex monster or graphically assaulted or murdered. So to me the recent revelations just confirmed my impression of him. Pratchett did a joint series with Baxter as well which I enjoyed.

ErrolTheDragon · 07/11/2024 15:01

Re gaiman, I've enjoyed some of his books but I think the big difference is that - in line with the characters of the authors it seems - Gaiman's often have an unpleasantness of some sort about them which Pratchett's don't. The Long Earth series with Stephen Baxter likewise doesn't have the streak of nastiness.

I love Mort, Death is by far my favourite character

I started with Mort then went onto Weird (Wyrd?) Sisters. After that I wasn’t that keen but both of them were a good overview.

I love Death as a character too.

Sexual abuse allegations by 5 women. Yikes!

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 07/11/2024 16:14

I would start with either guards guards, witches abroad or Mort. I read the series from the beginning many years ago, but agree that the first two are not as good, so wouldn't want you to be put off. Night watch is my favourite, but definitely better if you have read other watch books first. Enjoy whatever you start with, it's a wonderful universe.

Torontospliffavoider · 07/11/2024 16:16

I have just started with Terry Pratchett as well. I have found it easy to get started with his book on short stories.

Now I know his writing style I feel like I can read a book. Perfect time of year for the Hogfather :)

(I struggle with finishing books!)

Anguauberwaldironfoundersson · 07/11/2024 17:00

I just came to say Wyrd Sisters or Mort. They're definitely the easier of the early reads.

Going Postal is also good.

If you want an almost true standalone in the universe then Monstrous Regiment is absolutely brilliant. It has some of the Night Watch in it towards the end but you get a feel for the writing style without investing too heavily in the universe. It's also one of his later books and he definitely relaxed his style more as he wrote.

Anguauberwaldironfoundersson · 07/11/2024 17:03

I definitely struggle to choose a favourite character on the Disc, but Vimes has a special place in my heart.

Babadookinthewardrobe · 07/11/2024 17:04

Well don’t go telling Carrot that @Anguauberwaldironfoundersson!

Thanks everyone - that map thingy looks useful @CMOTDibbler . I think I'm leaning to the witches or the nightwatch series. There's just so many !

If you start with the witches, I would skip equal rites for now and start with wyrd sisters. It’s more enjoyable imo and one of the first I read.

EskSmith · 07/11/2024 17:10

I'd go witches, then death arc, then Tiffany.(Although I am biased)..Then you'll be ready for Guards or Rincewind ;)

Do not skip equal rites 😮 it is one of the very best

SmiteTheeWithThunderbolts · 07/11/2024 17:15

Definitely not Hogfather - that's one I'll be happy if I never reread ever again.

I would suggest Eric because it's short but will introduce you to the style and humour. If you like it then move on to the witches or guards.

Mysterian · 07/11/2024 17:24

Watch the film The Colour Of Magic which covers the first 2 books, then read in published order.

LetsChaseTrees · 07/11/2024 17:28

CMOTDibbler · 07/11/2024 11:16

I'd go for Guards! Guards! as a starting point into the Nightwatch arc

What a brilliant map! I need that as a poster…

Guards Guards and Mort are my favourites and I would recommend starting with one of them. I’ve always preferred the night watch and Death books.

As has been said, it’s worth reading any of the particular arcs in order, but really all the books also stand alone and weave together, so you can just dive right in.

You are in for a treat!

DatingDunce · 07/11/2024 17:30

I agree, Guards Guards is a great place to start.

Carpe Jugulum is my favourite of the witches novels.

You're in for a treat 😊

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 07/11/2024 17:33

I started with Mort, and was hooked.

Don't be put off with it being Death - I really can't explain without spoiling it, but it's just brilliant.

Well you would say that, Eskerina😁

I genuinely forgot my user name and wondered what you were on about for a moment 🤣

GreebosABigSoftyReally · 07/11/2024 19:14

Mort was the first one I read (and fell in love with), Going Postal and Making Money are wonderful - in fact all of them are! I wish I could read them all for the first time again!

TotallyFloored · 08/11/2024 11:59

I feel like this is the cool group at school that are all talking about things that I don't understand. I think I've picked Guards... Maybe
