I finished the book I was reading at the weekend (Fairy Tale - Stephen King). It was a bit of a slog as SK + no visual imagination to benefit from his scene setting is a lot to get through (although the best I've read this year!) and I feel like I've hit a bit of a wall.

This is my current TBR pile. I think I need a pacy twisty book next. Any recommendations from this lot?

I'll take any recommendations in general tbh! Usually a psychological thriller reader, trying to chuck in the odd classic, with the odd palate cleanser thrown in too.

I'd definitely read Bradbury's Farenheit 451. Great book. If you like high brow sci fi (which I guess that's what Bradbury wrote) try Huxley's Brave New World. I'd also recommend Solaris. Right now I'm massively into Douglas Adams, and reading everything he wrote.

GroovyChick87 · 23/10/2024 19:52

I've read the Lisa Jewell and the Claire Douglas ones. I wouldn't say they were the best written by those authors but were enjoyable enough fast paced reads that I finished within a couple of days.

GroovyChick87 · 23/10/2024 19:52

And I've read Verity. I think this is one of Colleen Hoover's better ones.

Preppingpenguin · 23/10/2024 19:53

Another vote for Fahrenheit 45. Breakneck Point is also very good.

Min133 · 23/10/2024 19:53

Demon Copperhead is brilliant

stayathomer · 23/10/2024 19:54

Lisa Jewell!! Great stash op!!!

spartanrunnergirl · 23/10/2024 19:55

I am pilgrim. You cannot put it down, it is the best page turner I've ever read.

OrangeSlices998 · 23/10/2024 19:55

‘None of this is true’ was an easy read I got through in a few days and I struggle sometimes!

Have you read Strange Sally Diamond? Highly recommend

Ted22 · 23/10/2024 19:56

Demon Copperhead, hands down.

MyBestFriendKenny · 23/10/2024 19:58

Steve Cavanagh is an excellent palate cleanser

taggy321 · 23/10/2024 19:59

I'd go for the Lisa Jewell

GiraffeTree · 23/10/2024 19:59

Of your pile I've read Demon Copperhead, Fahrenheit 451 and The Book Thief. All three are brilliant but I wouldn't describe any of them as a pacy twisty book so maybe leave them for another time and read one of the thrillers now.

ShillyShallySherbet · 23/10/2024 20:03

I loved the Midnight Library and would recommend. I loved the whole parallel universe theme and it really got me thinking. I couldn’t put it down and I even read it again straight after I’d finished as I wanted to read it again with the benefit of hindsight which is a rare thing for me to do!

efeslight · 23/10/2024 20:25

Have similar tastes to you.
Read Ray Bradbury years ago but enjoyed it, Patricia highsmith too.
Really enjoyed I am Pilgrim.
Read quite a few of the more modern thrillers in your pile, but to be honest they all blend together in my memory.
Go for Ray Bradbury

SoMentallyDrained · 23/10/2024 21:00

Lisa Jewell every time!

Although I haven't read it, I've seen lots of really good reviews of Hidden Pictures

Katrinawaves · 23/10/2024 21:13

I’ve just finished Everyone her is Lying and that is definitely pacey and twisty if that’s what you are looking for in your next read. I enjoyed it.

ShillyShallySherbet · 23/10/2024 21:24

I’m just starting on the Lisa Jewell one since reading this thread and hooked already! Thanks!

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 23/10/2024 21:25

The Fury is good and fast paced

Pizzaaah · 23/10/2024 21:28

Lisa Jewell and Shari Lapena always get me out of a reading slump!

great haul OP!

autienotnaughty · 23/10/2024 21:57

The Shari Lapena, Claire Douglas Alice Feeny and Andrea Mara are excellent. The Lisa jewel is ok.

The book thief is rubbish

autienotnaughty · 23/10/2024 21:58

If you are looking for inspiration-

Mark edwards
Harriet Tyce
Kia abdullah
Ruth ware

Are all fab

Thanks everyone!

Good to know that there's books there that come well recommended. I've heard very good things about I Am Pilgrim and Demon Copperhead, but I'm not sure I can face another 600+ page book just yet. Fahrenheit 451 is tempting as a shorter book, but think I just need an easy read right now.

Thank you for the new recommendations too, there's some that I've read a lot of, and some I've never come across so no doubt more books will be being delivered soon - I have a whole new Billy bookcase to fill (once it's built hence, why I just have a massive pile on the bedside table!)

Good to know about breakneck point, I took a punt when I popped into Waterstones who had a local author showcase table going on

I really enjoyed None of this is true. I think they're making it into a Netflix film too. I need to read the Shari Lapena, looks good from what people are saying here!

Yirk · 24/10/2024 07:53

Matt Haig fan here, just finished his new book Life Impossible, really enjoyed it.
However Demon Copperhead is a brilliant read.
