I'd like to read one too.
What are you reading?

Some interesting reads!
I'd like to read something scary. I didn't find Dark Matter scary either but it was a good read.
Is Waykenhurst scary? I think I have that downloaded.
I prefer real books so still having a browse before I buy one.

Waykenhurst isn’t scary. It’s unsettling and has a wonderfully lonely feel. It felt to me not unlike The Secret Garden, but older.

Lovewine1975 · 08/10/2024 17:02

I'm about to start Mr Stoker & I by Becky Wright, its a new author too me but saw it on Amazon and had good reviews, very gothic and chilling, and I love anything to do with Dracula at this time of year!

orangelotus · 09/10/2024 13:05

The silent companions is very creepy.
I love Stephen Kings old books but find the newer ones a bit meandering

ReacherSaidNothing · 09/10/2024 18:05

I'm planning on reading Horrorstor by Grady Hendrix. It's a horror story based in a furniture store which is pretty much Ikea by another name. The book itself is designed like an Ikea catalogue, quite fun looking!

RaininSummer · 09/10/2024 18:25

Does Zombie book count? Downloaded one yesterday for Kindle.

PlasticCupP0litics · 09/10/2024 18:30

Not a huge fan of horror because I end up scared to go to the loo in the middle of the night! Have however just finished reading the latest book in the Accidental Medium series by Tracy Whitwell. Definitely a good amount of spooky stuff but also just hilarious!

inthekitchensink · 09/10/2024 18:40

I just read far too many horrors in a row and now feeling slightly sick!
Thoroughly recommend the September House, Slade House, The Collector, Black Sheep, Fellside, Diavola, which were all fabulous.

I enjoyed some others but with disclaimers of gruesomeness and just a bit weird - How to Sell a Haunted House, The Final Girls Support Group, Someone Like Me, Bonehead and Naomi’s Room.

Last year I loved Starve Acre, Silent Companions, Chouette, Mexican Gothic, The Whistling, The Lighthouse Witches, Affinity and the Little Stranger

AddictedToBooks · 09/10/2024 18:48

I've just ordered "The Drowning Pool" by Syd Moore and "The Night House" by Jo Nesbitt.

One good spooky book that I read recently was called "The Whistling" by Rebecca Netley. I usually donate all of my read books to charity but this one was so atmospheric and beautifully written that I decided to keep this one.

Bowup · 09/10/2024 18:55

I love horror, both Film and books.
I’ve never found any book particularly creepy or scary, exceptions being The Shining and The last days of Jack sparks. Not merely slightly creepy but a good story like Dark Matter but properly terrifying 😬

Norugratsatall · 10/10/2024 13:03

Anyone read Thin Air by Michelle Paver? I found it amongst DD1's books that were storing for her whilst she's abroad- wondered if it was worth a read!

Lovewine1975 · 10/10/2024 13:56

@Norugratsatall I've read Thin Air and really good, very atmospheric and creepy definitely recommend it, Dark Matter another book by the same author is even better and scarier!

Bamboozie · 10/10/2024 14:00

I’ve started reading Doctor Sleep by Stephen King. I’ve read it a few times & it’s probably one of my favourite books by him. It’s very eerie and creepy, especially the parts about the Overlook Hotel and its supernatural inhabitants.

Norugratsatall · 10/10/2024 15:07

@Lovewine1975 thank you! I'll give it a whirl! And if I like it, will order Dark Matter.

Compash · 10/10/2024 15:11

What a good idea! Following for ideas... I might re-read Slade House and Starve Acre mentioned above...

SunnyTimes3 · 10/10/2024 15:14

I’m reading Shirley Jackson - We have always lived in the Castle. Half way through and really enjoying it.

GalaticalFarce · 10/10/2024 16:12

I'd love to hear of some lesser known books.
I recently came across This House Is Haunted and Road of Bones.
I think I need a couple of hours in a bookshop because it's hard to know what books are out there now.
My nearest Waterstones has shut down now so now I have to travel somewhere.

My favourite is Pet Semetary by Stephen King.

Is slade house haunted 👻 tales then?

spiritgoat · 10/10/2024 16:55

I read a lot of horror in general, some I've read recently which hit the spot:

The Carrow Haunt by Darcy Coates (or anything at all by Darcy Coates), Hidden Pictures by Jason Rekulak, The Whistling by Rebecca Netley, a Head Full of Ghosts by Paul Tremblay, Hex by Thomas Olde Heuvelt - these were nice cosy horrors, nothing too wild but enough for a gentle spook.

Stolen Tongues by Felix Blackwell and its prequel which I forget the name of were actually quite scary. Similarly if you're into spooky folklore type stuff I'd recommend almost anything by Adam Nevill.

If you want something actually horrifying (as in scenes that make you go WTF and maybe feel a bit sick) go for David Sodergren.

spiritgoat · 10/10/2024 17:02

Also We Used to Live Here by Marcus Kliewer, and Let's Go Play at the Adam's' by Mendal Johnson (check the TW before reading the latter) - these are more psychological horrors but they unnerved the shit out of me.

Winter moon by dean koontz..
Anyone read this?👻

TeaMeBasil · 10/10/2024 21:28

Oh I love a spooky book!!

Cannot recommend Michelle Paver more with Dark Matter and Thin Air. Two of the few books I've reread and also listened to in audible several times. Waykenhurst was also good but not as good as these two for me.

Laura Purcell is brilliant for the more gothic spooky, and also agree Grady Hendrix is great for scary and weirdly fun. I loved Horrorstor and Final Girls Support Group and How to sell a Haunted House.

The Troop by Nick Cutter was really good so plan to hunt out some more of his books.

Two I've read recently are September House by Clarissa Orlando - a great take on the haunted house story and has a lot of ghosts.

The other I'm halfway through and absolutely loving is Ask for Andrea by Noelle Ihli, a great ghost/thriller story. A serial killer is stalking through dating sites and murders 3 women over a few years, each become ghosts and try to deal with their deaths and wanting to bring him to justice, then they manage to join forces. It sounds a bit odd but it's great, really well done and I'm devouring it.

Next up are Weyward, Mexican Gothic and Moon Stone 😁

Reading Carrie 50th anniversary edition and planning to read The Shining too. Big fan of Stephen King but haven’t read these yet. Although inspired by this thread I’m now considering Dracula too.

I've never read Carrie but I'm tempted by the cover to buy the 50th Anniversary copy!

I'd forgotten about Dean Koontz and that looks like a good book.
