Is it worth it? I've picked it up SO many times and just can't get past a few pages. I saw it recommended on here ahes ago.

I just can't....I don't know. I find it irritating.

I didn't enjoy it. I felt like I wasn't quite 'getting it' and was just a bit bemused when I'd finished it. Based on my experience I'd say cut your losses now!

TheGodOfSmallPotatoes · 25/09/2024 19:13

I have done the exact same thing! Will be interested in the answers 😂

Oh dear 😂

I loved it. I think that ultimately I found the endings and explanations less rewarding than just travelling through the world it created. But it was a wonderful ride while it lasted.

LunaNorth · 25/09/2024 19:25

I really liked it.

AmICrazyToEvenBother · 25/09/2024 19:25

I liked it!

TotallyFloored · 25/09/2024 19:26

Hated it.

Supersimkin7 · 25/09/2024 19:27

Blew my face off. Loved it.

everycowandagain · 25/09/2024 19:28

Hated it! I am fascinated by the fact that some people loved it!!

Curtainsformeplease · 25/09/2024 19:28

I loved it too but it took some perseverance to get through the first few pages. Worth it imo

Theydontknowaboutus · 25/09/2024 19:30

Loved it. Listened to it, rather than read it, which might have helped with getting into it, as it is hard work to start - but so worth it, imo.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 25/09/2024 19:32

Don't do it to yourself!! Bloody alabaster statues and hallways zzzzzzz

grannysbay · 25/09/2024 19:34

I loved it..... but its very sad

RedRosie · 25/09/2024 19:35

I loved it too. In particular the "travelling" (as @ReadWithScepticism says upthread). Very immersive.

UnimaginableWindBird · 25/09/2024 19:36

I loved it, but I listened to the audiobook rather than reading a printed copy.

Agree with this - I absolutely loved exploring the world but didn't get as much from the ending. Like some others here, I listened to it so maybe that helps!

SausageRoll2020 · 25/09/2024 19:37

I really enjoyed it, it was a few years ago though so can't remember if it took me a little while to get into it or not.
Have you read any others by Susanna Clarke?

jollyhollyday · 25/09/2024 19:51

It was hard to get into but I enjoyed it and it's stayed with me since I read it a few years ago

R00tat00tt00t · 25/09/2024 21:02

I listened to it on Audible and found it highly irritating. Constant repetitive droning about "In the west hall on the 57th day after the albatross came". I've been listening to it on and off for months as I hate leaving a book unfinished but I'm not sure it's worth the slog...

RedRosie · 25/09/2024 21:15

I thought it was so beautifully written, and Piranesi's world so gorgeously described, that I read it through twice - starting again immediately as I finished it. Echos of Gormenghast.

But there would be no variety in literary fiction, if we all liked the same things!

ClementineChurchill · 25/09/2024 21:20

Loved the first two thirds. Then it felt as though she’d been told to wrap it up so it ended really abruptly and oddly. I’d love to read something that was about 900 pages long set in the world of the first 2/3 of it.

I’ve been meaning to give Gormenghast another go because I found it unbearably dull and stopped after about 20-30 pages, so this has given me another push to do that.

VictoryOrDeath · 25/09/2024 21:23

God, I listened to the audiobook and hated it.

CanyonMoon · 25/09/2024 21:34

I hated it.

Was really looking forward to it, as I loved Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell so was very disappointed. It just felt like a waste of time (that’s from someone who spends hours and days in a book with no recrimination!)

I loved Gormenghast as an 18 year old who adored Sting! He loved it and named his daughter Fuschia.

Piranesi was 'odd' but I did enjoy it - I think.....
