Is it worth it? I've picked it up SO many times and just can't get past a few pages. I saw it recommended on here ahes ago.

I just can't....I don't know. I find it irritating.

I loved it. It genuinely moved me and I still think of it from time to time, when I need to remind myself of the beauty and kindness of 'the house'.

I can totally understand other people not getting on with it though, it's a very odd book.

His innocence was appealing but it was strangely disturbing

stravagante · 25/09/2024 22:09

I loved it. It was a dreamy and magical little tale and I did not see the ending coming which was a pleasant surprise.

God, I listened to the audiobook and hated it.

I tried listening to the audiobook, but gave up. Had no idea what was going on and decided life is too short to keep persevering with books I'm not enjoying.

Nikkynakkynoo · 25/09/2024 22:57

This was a total marmite book in my book club! I loved it, even though it is not at all the type of thing I usually read. But I agree it does take a while to get going!

MutleyCrew · 25/09/2024 23:05

I was mad with boredom (had to read it for book club).

AlwaysColdHands · 25/09/2024 23:09

One of a tiny number of books I’ve ever given up on midway

no regrets

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 26/09/2024 06:19

It was strange, but I liked it. I might read it again sometime.

I like this comment. Agreed.

user7654263 · 26/09/2024 06:25

I liked it. It wasn’t a patch in Jonathan strange though. That was a true masterpiece.

peanutcookie · 26/09/2024 06:32

I loved it but perhaps because I listened to the audiobook. It's not my usual type of book so I think if I was reading a physical one I'd have left it. I listened to it on my commute when I couldn't have been reading anyway so it worked plus I try to listen to books I wouldn't normally read

Pat888 · 26/09/2024 06:51

I loved it but also it was an audiobook. In fact I've listened to it twice (very unusual for me).
With books like this I spend time wondering how in earth they came up with the idea and how they managed to portray the idea in words.
Is Johnathon Strange and Mr Norrell as good does anyone know? Such a big book.

HarpyBirthday · 26/09/2024 08:04

I loved it. A bit slow at the very start but then was hooked and found it weird and fascinating.

Preferred it to Jonathan Strange which although the detail was brilliant, I found overlong.

NotbloodyGivingupYet · 26/09/2024 08:23

Aargh! What an annoying book! I finished it because I HAVE to finish a book once I've started it. And it was lockdown so I couldn't just nip out for another one.
This was nearly the book that broke me. I almost binned it rather than donating, to save anyone else from the pain. Just reading the title of your post sent a surge of anger and resentment through me.
Pages and pages of halls and waves and statues and diaries, then the intrusion of ...., then the totally unsatisfactory - well I won't spoil it for you 😏
Tldr, do yourself a favour. Burn it now.

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 26/09/2024 08:26

I absolutely loved it, one of my favourite books.

pollyhemlock · 26/09/2024 08:30

I love this book-one of my absolute favourites of the last three years or so. I found the construction of the House fascinating - the way it uses myths and stories from our world. In general I love books about the sea and alternative worlds so it ticks a lot of boxes for me. Obviously it’s not for everyone though.

Hedjwitch · 26/09/2024 08:34

Persevered with it because of all the hype but didnt enjoy it at all, and the ending didnt deliver. Clever concept but bloody hard work. It wasnt worth the effort.

Allnewtometoo · 26/09/2024 09:15

Oh wow, it's either love or hate than. I don't like being defeated by a book, but equally there are SO many as yet unread books....

I might try again on the basis that I really haven't got beyond a few pages, abd it might draw me in yet.

I read it (not audio) and loved it and it was popular on the 50 Bookers Thread from what I can remember. Her world building is superb. But can see how some people might not get on with it because it is quite strange but I liked that.

@Pat888 Strange and Norrell is quite fairytale like but more rooted in a recognisable historical world (with added magic) than Piranesi. I adored it so much and loved being immersed in her alternative Georgian world.

ThereTheyGo · 26/09/2024 09:24

I loved it, more than Jonathan Strange. But I can immerse myself in worlds that don't make sense and just go along for the ride, for the experience and emotion of it.

Lovelyview · 26/09/2024 16:09

I loved it. I inflicted it on my book group and I think it was about 75% pro 25% against.
