Anybody want to create a book club?

Hi is anyone interested in joining a book club? I've been trying to find one for a while but they're all either massive online communities, totally silent and dead, very niche genres, or require a paid subscription. I'm thinking of something that's a bit of a smaller group, we can post here if it's allowed or in a private sub I will create on Reddit, and maybe even do Zoom/teams meetings if people would like that.

For me, 40s F, it's cliche but I really enjoy a good psychological thriller or crime/murder mystery. Don't mind a bit of supernatural, beach feel good reads, enjoy some feminist themes, sometimes historical, sometimes classic. Cannot get into sci fi or fantasy! Am happy to be the one to choose a monthly book or take it in turns to nominate the next read.

If anyone's interested please reply and I'll try to figure it out!

Could I join you all too please?

pinkflamingo83 · 22/08/2024 00:17

If not too late, I would like to join please. 41 yo teacher and an avid reader in my school holidays - this may hopefully give me the discipline to keep it up all year round 😁
I am into all of the genres mentioned in the OP (just haven't had time to read all the replies) but am open to other genres too. Thank you OP for suggesting x

Hi, I can't seem to DM off the app but when I'm back on the laptop later I'll message the link to people who've asked since I last posted on here :)

Hi would love to join. I love to read outside my usual comfort zone. I particularly like politics books, dystopian and historical fiction but open to anything.

tiktokontheclock · 22/08/2024 09:33

Can I join too please

Viviennemary · 22/08/2024 09:37

I'd be interested. Could you just create one on MN and see how it goes.

Hellyeahbaby · 22/08/2024 09:42

Please could I join the fb group, I'm 44 and love to read, love crime and psychological thrillers, but up for anything new. Been looking for a book club for a while now

Lemonbalm8 · 22/08/2024 11:07

Hi @UCDLA I didn't get DM.

CharlotteLightandDark · 22/08/2024 12:46

I got one but the link doesn’t work, sorry!
does the group have a name I can search for on fb?

Yes an MN one would be great, MN have discussion threads for tv shows, films and books too, I don't think having a book club on here would be too unusual

I’d love anyone’s tips on setting up a good IRL book club! I went to one once about 15 years ago pre kids and can’t remember much about it. I’d like to read more and meet other adults basically. If we meet in a quiet pub that could work I think? I would put an ad up in the local library etc. So what kind of time of day, duration, format, comms works well at your clubs?

UCDLA · 22/08/2024 13:12

jclm · 21/08/2024 23:39

I'd like to join too!! Great idea. I listen to audio books rather than reading "properly" these days

Hi @jclm I can't seem to Dm you, so if you send me a message I'll give you the link

I would love an IRL club, but it seems impossible to find one that fits in with my tastes or availability! (single parent so it's tricky to actually get out of the house, never mind concentrate on reading). That's why I thought doing a small group online with no pressures would would definitely be better than nothing at all. Sometimes I finish a book and really want to have just a general chat about it, nothing too high brow! It might be worth contacting local book shops, quite a few near me have book clubs and author visits, there might be some quieter ones near you that would welcome possible extra business?

I kind of get your anxiety! But..... It's a book club.... You're not joining a Facebook group for foot fetishes .If you're recognised, Shirley from number 12 knows you like reading... 🤓big whoop! 😃

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 02/09/2024 22:32

Interested! I hardly get a chance to read so having a reason to finish a book would be great.
