Anybody want to create a book club?

Hi is anyone interested in joining a book club? I've been trying to find one for a while but they're all either massive online communities, totally silent and dead, very niche genres, or require a paid subscription. I'm thinking of something that's a bit of a smaller group, we can post here if it's allowed or in a private sub I will create on Reddit, and maybe even do Zoom/teams meetings if people would like that.

For me, 40s F, it's cliche but I really enjoy a good psychological thriller or crime/murder mystery. Don't mind a bit of supernatural, beach feel good reads, enjoy some feminist themes, sometimes historical, sometimes classic. Cannot get into sci fi or fantasy! Am happy to be the one to choose a monthly book or take it in turns to nominate the next read.

If anyone's interested please reply and I'll try to figure it out!

Count me in OP

BookShark · 21/08/2024 05:58

I'd be interested too and have similar tastes to you OP, although I'm trying to expand my reading by doing this: https://www.the52book.club/

But very happy to meet up virtually or on a thread to chat about books!

The 52 Book Club

52 Books in 52 Weeks

Oh yes please. I would like to join.
Great idea OP 😀

Walikingdeadfan · 21/08/2024 06:29

Im interested too. Great idea.

gettingoldtoquick · 21/08/2024 06:40

I would be very interested too. I've never actually joined a club though I've been saying for years I want to find one. I read all sorts of books so no particular favourite genre. I read almost all on my kindle though.

Wow amazing, I didn't expect so many replies! I am so chuffed!

I do have a busy day and evening ahead of me, but I promise I'll have a look how we could do it and then update here and DM everyone.

My first thought was to create a private subreddit but that would only work for people who are willing to sign up to Reddit if not already a user. I am already and it's very simple.

We could post openly here (if MN even allows that 🤷🏻‍♀️) but I think it wouldn't feel like a community as such, as it would of course be open to the public seeing anything we post. I'm not very familiar with other platforms like discord and slack so not willing to start fiddling around with that! That was the downfall for me of other book groups, I just don't have the time and energy to learn and use any new social media.

Other idea is a private Facebook group but obvs we'd potentially have our real names on that, and I know that not everybody would be comfortable with that idea. Reddit can be anonymous.

If anyone has huge objections to Reddit or fb please let me know. One of those 2 is definitely going to be my leaning, just for ease.

I am in a Facebook group and we just use chat for the book group which works well. There are different folks who host each time to ask questions about the book to spark the chat off. Just an idea

nationaltreasureDA · 21/08/2024 08:23

I would be interested in joining.

terracottafarm · 21/08/2024 08:24

Count me in albeit I'm 27. I love everything and anything. I am currently reading 'The Housemaid'.

Tadpole10 · 21/08/2024 09:02

Me too please! Fab idea.

outnumbered77 · 21/08/2024 09:43

Me too! Love crime and psychological thrillers.

FuckThePoPo · 21/08/2024 09:46

Just finished that and loved it!

EveryKneeShallBow · 21/08/2024 11:57

Yes please!

Lovetotravel123 · 21/08/2024 12:56

Yes please. I also hate sci-fi and fantasy!

Imtoooldforallthis · 21/08/2024 12:58

I would love to join, but I only read books available on prime reading as I find it expensive otherwise.

Allmychickenscometoroost · 21/08/2024 13:14

Prefer Facebook personally
no idea with reddit and find it hard to navigate. I'm really excited about this!

Eggling · 21/08/2024 13:27

I'd be interested, tastes very similar to yours through always willing to try something new and need some accountability to read rather than scroll on my phone!

theotherfossilsister · 21/08/2024 13:30

I'm interested. Late thirties with a toddler but keen to get back into reading anything that's not about motherhood.

Like nature writing a lot. Currently reading a novel though, Once Upon a River.

I work in a library so ought to read far more.

Tadpole10 · 21/08/2024 13:37

@UCDLA If you direct message us, please would you give a heads up on here? Usually I only look on MN app but I can log in on a computer to check for dms 📚

ILostMyself · 21/08/2024 13:38

I’m interested too! Also not a big fan or sci-fi/fantasy but love a bit of dystopian sometimes. Is that classed different to sci fi? I’m easy anyway, so happy to go with the flow.

KingscoteStaff · 21/08/2024 13:38

Me too, please.

Midlifeshenanigans · 21/08/2024 13:39

Can I join please 😃

spiderdave · 21/08/2024 13:55

Me too please! 30 F with a wide range of interest (honestly, anywhere from Austen to splatterpunk)

terracottafarm · 21/08/2024 13:57

@FuckThePoPo Amazing! I'm listening to the audio book whilst in bed. I'm only 1/3 of the way through. Can't wait to see what happens
