I'm totally overwhelmed with the amount of crime writers and I have no idea who to read! I've read the Roy Grace series so looking for something similar... easy reading for holiday, but a good long series I can get my teeth into, what have you read and loved please?

I love Ann Cleeves - Vera or Shetland. My favourite is the Cormoran Strike series by JKR/ Robert Galbraith.

ElaineMBenes · 17/07/2024 18:13

MW Craven's Washington Poe and Tilly Bradshaw series.
All of them are amazing.

Elly Griffiths’ Dr Ruth Galloway series set in Norfolk - mix of archaeology and police procedural

Or for something a little more out there - mix of police procedural and suggested supernatural elements - the Merrily Watkins series by Phil Rickman set in Herefordshire with an amazing sense of place and the unsettling liminality of the Welsh Marches.

Thank you, I'll have a look into all these, you've reminded me about the JK Rowling series, I've been meaning to look into that

I have really enjoyed several Elly Griffiths’ Dr Ruth Galloway books too. Also enjoyed Andrew Mayne's Naturalist series and Natasha Orme's Jason Hunter thrillers (only two in the series so far).

JM Dalgleish - he has 3 series 'Hidden Norfolk ' (love these and am 'patiently' waiting for the next one), 'Hidden Yorkshire' (didn't like the first one so didn't finish the series) and 'The Misty Isle series' (just finished the latest one). Of the 2 series I love (set in an area of Norfolk I know and on Skye where I've been several times) I think the main thing is that the characters are all individuals and you care about what happens in their lives away from work. I didn't like the main character in the Yorkshire series and is probably why I gave up. Great reading for your holiday!

Try;
Jo Spain
Cara Hunter.
Also Damien Boyd.
And Susan Hill does a crime series.

BarbaraBuncle · 18/07/2024 05:29

Favourite series of mine are Cara Hunter's DI Adam Fawley, Elly Griffiths' Dr Ruth Galloway, and Nicci French's Dr Frieda Klein.

Teenagekicksmyass · 18/07/2024 05:37

Tana French. Her Dublin Murder Squad books are absolutely amazing

patsy999 · 18/07/2024 05:49

Ive just read 3 kate ellis crime books in a row.
There only just over 200 pages eache but they are really good. If you want a bit of supernatural thrown in as well.

Fgfgfg · 20/07/2024 09:26

Similar to Peter James are Mark Billingham and Stuart McBride.

Can I just add Spenser series by Robert B Parker, but pound for pound nobody beats Michael Connolly in the UK or US

Hellohah · 22/07/2024 07:30

I have really enjoyed the Armand Gamache series (set in Canada).

The first book is Still Life, Louise Penny.

There are 18 books so far, 19 due out later this year so plenty to sink your teeth into.

RampantIvy · 22/07/2024 07:38

In addition to the above - Peter May, especially The Lewis Trilogy books and Joe Nesbo.

JoJothegerbil · 22/07/2024 08:32

Jane Harper's Aaron Falk series set in Australia. There's 4 books so far starting with The Dry which is set in a small Outback town.

Yiayoula · 22/07/2024 08:43

I’ve read and enjoyed many of the authors recommended above, and pleased to find some I haven’t yet tried.
For easy holiday reading , may I add the Guido Brunetti series by Donna Leon . They’re set in and around Venice, which is an added bonus.

RampantIvy · 22/07/2024 08:48

If you want something a little more light hearted there are the Agatha Raisin books by MC Beaton and the Inspector Montalbano books by Andrea Camilleri.

TheHallmarkedMan · 22/07/2024 21:57

I'm loving Rhys Dylan's DCI Warlow books set in Carmarthenshire. I love a bit of Celtic Noir and the narrator has such a beautiful voice.

Highlandcathedral · 22/07/2024 22:07

I like a bit of tartan noir so I’d add the JD Kirk series set in the highlands (read in order, big series) and the James Oswald Maclean series set in Edinburgh. Both great characters and good story lines. The Oswald ones have a degree of the supernatural which put me off reading them at first but I love them now and read as on as they are out.

Redshoeblueshoe · 22/07/2024 22:14

I love the Sean Duffy series by Adrian McKinty. It's set in Northern Ireland in the 80's. Duffy is a Catholic copper.

Upthejunctionandroundthebend · 31/07/2024 16:08

William Shaw's Alexandra Cupidi series set in Dungeness.
Douglas Johnstones' Skelf series, very female oriented.
Anything by Belinda Bauer, some are in a series.
Linwood Barclays Promise Falls series.
