Haven't had one of these for a while...

Now - Paulo Coelho The Devil and Miss Prym (book club read)

Next - Georgiana biog then probably The Gathering (depending how long the Georgiana biog takes and whether its book club read again !)

Currently:

Reluctant Capitalists (non-fiction, about bookselling)
Set Up, Joke, Set Up, Joke - Rob Long

Next:

ummmm.... not sure.... if it arrives in the post, hopefully The Way The Crow Flies (because I didn't quite get enough misery and horror from Fall On Your Knees!). I have about 20 unread books lined up on the shelf at the moment (combination of book swaps, MIL loans and bookshop warehouse sale) and I find picking the next one very, very hard.

tigana · 10/04/2008 23:31

current - short history of nearly everything - bill bryson.

next

maybe "exit music" by ian rankin?

brimfull · 10/04/2008 23:35

flossietcake-I'm also reading The Way the Crow Flies, yes I read about 3 books at the same time.

What was Fall on Your Knees like? Crow flies isn't horrendous or miserable yet but you've got me wondering now...

Bloody huge copy I've got, just about breaks my wrists reading it in bed.

PollyPentapeptide · 10/04/2008 23:45

Agree about Labyrinth being dire.I only managed about half of it.

Have just finished reading The Pillars of the Earth and World Without End by Ken Follett. Both brilliant books and now looking for something else to sink my teeth into

FlossieTCake · 11/04/2008 00:09

ggirl, it's pretty bleak! If it were a real book you would put it in the 'Tragic True-Life Stories' section (or whatever it's called) and back away very quickly... but vv powerfully written. It ends quite hopefully at least.

brimfull · 11/04/2008 00:18

oh really-I never read those tragic life books.

I think the crow flies one is different-a murder is looming I think but so far is all nicey nicey.I'm enjoying it as it's set in Southern Ontario where I grew up and in the 60's which although I was born in 62 I can relate to a lot of it.

Solitaire · 11/04/2008 00:23

I feel my yearly reading of Jane Eyre coming on. Yep Mr Rochester is what I need

Wheelybug · 11/04/2008 08:46

oh Flossie - I know what you mean about picking the next - I too must have about 30 To Be Reads. I find these sort of threads v. useful for prioritising ! If someone raves about a book it gets bumped up the pile ! So, Mr Pip may well be read v. soon.

constancereader · 11/04/2008 18:23

Now - Flat Earth Journalism. It is excellent.

Next - Pioneer Girl, about the life of Laura Ingalls Wilder, as recommended by Mumsnet.

SilentTerror · 11/04/2008 19:02

Restless by William Boyd is excellent!
I have just read Silesian Station by David Downing, set in 1939 Berlin and brilliant!
Next is Zoo Station, also by Downing, the first in the series.

elkiedee · 19/04/2008 23:23

Oops, shouldn't have looked at this thread, now need to know about the books re bookselling and Laura Ingalls Wilder.

I'm currently reading Killer Tune, by Dreda Say Mitchell - it's a crime novel and I think the second by this author, I heard her speak at an event a couple of years ago and bought the first but haven't read it yet. I saw this one in a new local bookshop and was keen to choose something to take home with me. And it's set in a neighbouring area of north east London - I'm always interested in seeing how writers portray their settings, particularly ones I know a little.

It took me a little while to get in to the story, at first the characters seemed very unsympathetic and then about 80 pages in I changed my mind.

Next, I'm not sure - crime novel, trashy chicklit, more "literary novel" or non-fiction - I have thousands of books to choose between! It's often books that I've bought relatively recently because they're close to hand. Perhaps the latest Peter Robinson book about police detective Alan Banks.

suedonim · 20/04/2008 00:35

What shall I read next? I was going to tackle Jonathan Strange and Dr Norrell (is that right???) but my fancy has been taken by the Tractors in Ukranian book and that midewife in the E End story. But maybe I'll go with Blood River....or....or...

rushour · 20/04/2008 10:06

i will be finishing we need to talk about Kevin today. i met Lionel Shriver yesterday at a Readers Day in Liverpool. It was wonderful to meet her in person and to get her perspective / motivation for writing such a harrowing book. i think for those of us who have read it know only too well the 'can't move onto the next chapter, until i've sorted the questioning out in my head proces', for e.g. why was Frankin such a fool and who is really to blame for 'Thursday'.

Her latest book, The Post Birthday world sounds interesting and much more light hearted than Kevin.

I know i'm going to need a pick me up after i've read Kevin, so would welcome any suggestions. i was thinking of reading Nick Hornby's first teen novel, Slam, next.

piratecat · 20/04/2008 10:09

I just read
26a by Diana Evans,
and it has to be one of the most poignant, and intelligent books I have ever read. I would love to be able to write like that.

cyteen · 20/04/2008 11:25

Just finished: Geek Love by Katherine Dunn, which despite some serious flaws I absolutely loved.

Next: Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood, also rereading The End Of Alice by AM Homes (book club choice - mine).

I need to read American Psycho for my dissertation at some point, but just can't face the grimness right now!
