Did She Fall Or Was She Pushed? Dangerous Liaisons Readalong 2024

Following a series of successful Fallen Women readalongs - War and Peace, Anna Karenina, Madame Bovary, Ruth - we continue our exploration of desire, hypocrisy, disgrace and redemption with the earlier (and even more scandalous) Dangerous Liaisons.

Widely adapted in text, film, opera and even ballet, Les Liaisons Dangereuses is an epistolatory novel comprising 175 letters.

Author Chodelos de Laclos "resolved to write a book that would be quite outside the ordinary trend, which would make a sensation and echo over the world after I left it." His book was a succès de scandale on its 1782 publication, reviewed as "diabolique" while becoming an instant bestseller. Marie Antoinette commissioned a blank cover copy for her library, and Virginia Woolf later read it with "great delight".

Readalongs are Mumsnet's best kept secret - a quiet corner of the site where we tackle the books we might not manage alone, sharing our thoughts and reactions, and encouraging each other to keep going when life - or the book - are challenging. It's fine to dip in and out as life permits, very few of us manage to keep up consistently.

We've only heard good things about DL, so do join us for a cracking good read. We start 1st May, 1 letter a day:

1 - 31 May Letters 1 - 31
1 - 30 June Letters 32 - 61
1 - 31 July Letters 62 - 92
1 - 31 August Letters 93 - 123
1- 30 September 124 - 153
1 - 22nd October 154 - 175

There are summaries of each letter at shmoop.com. I'll post them when I can, but anyone is welcome to start us off if you are first here on the day.

Looking forward to it!

There's also a TV series prequel. It looks a bit crap, despite having Christopher Hampton as exec producer but is available on Amazon if you're curious.

Thank you Vicountess, I had no idea about all those - Rickman as Valmont must have been to die for! The Pfeiffer/Close/Malkovich film looks great, we’re temporarily TV-less at the moment but will watch it when we’re back in action.

I’m at around letter 100, Madame de Tourvel has confessed her love. I actually really like the writing etc, I’ve just bogged down with life.

I am probably heading straight for the Glen Close adaption once I have finished.

CornishLizard · 10/11/2024 19:53

Poor, conflicted Madame de Tourvel 😞

CornishLizard · 02/12/2024 08:33

Watched the Malkovich et al film at last - absolutely brilliant. Really faithful despite losing the epistolary written format. Thanks for recommending it Viscountess.

It's very good, isn't it. Well done with your perseverance!

I’m still not finished and whilst I was enjoying it, I’ve lost all interest now. I’ve got a free weekend and going to really try and just get done.

CornishLizard · 05/12/2024 12:58

Sorry to hear it’s become a chore - could you abandon the boat for the film?

AgualusasLover · 14/12/2024 21:56

I am done!!!

Well, there is 11-12% left but I’m almost certain it’s just the footnotes.

I know this lost a little appeal because I fell off the readalong, I may have felt differently if I didn’t have to recall which vile act we were talking about now.

That said, I thought Valmont and Merteiul were fanstastically well drawn characters, I really enjoyed their snarky correspondence. The manipulation and downright abuse in some instances was awful, but Laclos did a good job in always bringing me back to their biting venom and zing between the two villains.

It did feel a hit abrupt at the end - he is killed, disfigured by smallpox etc, but fitting I suppose.

Well done @AgualusasLover for sticking with it!!

Good to see you at the finish line @AgualusasLover !
