I've seen an old thread about this and I thought I'd create a new one.

What would you recommend? I love discovering new books!

Holes by Louis Sachar and I still love to reread Diana Wynne Jones' Chrestomanci series.

Laughed my head off with my DS when he was younger at Mr Gumm. Really loved all the How to Train your Dragon books. And I'm afraid I loved Harry Potter too.

I am a big Jacqueline Wilson fan but I especially like her historical novels -
The Hetty Feather series and it's various spin off novels are good.
For a completely different genre I like the Alex Rider spy series by Anthony Horowitz.
And for another completely different genre the graphic novels by Raina Telgemeier are fantastic.

squashyhat · 25/03/2024 11:56

All the Arthur Ransome books, from Swallows and Amazons to Great Northern. I have my Mum's set which I regularly reread.

TheCountessofLocksley · 25/03/2024 11:56

@Needmorelego made me think about the Young James Bond series as well by Charlie Higson.

Holes by Louis Sachar and I still love to reread Diana Wynne Jones' Chrestomanci series.

I loved Charmed Life.

I also liked Bullerby Children stories, anything by Astrid Lindgren actually.

And funnily enough, not a story but a 60s coloured children's safety book with 'don't swim in an unsafe area (like a lake)', 'don't accept sweets from children (with a picture of a man in a mackintosh and hat stooping down offering sweets to a child). Me and DB loved that book for some reason.

I honestly think holes by Louis Sachar is the most amazing children's book ever written. The way all the separate storylines weave together is just fantastic.

I'd love to be a children's author but I could never write anything half as good as that.

Jacqueline Wilson, really enjoyed reading those
as a teenager i loved noel streatfield
i also read the hunger games books

HippyKayYay · 25/03/2024 12:07

How to Train Your Dragon. The books themselves are brilliant, but the audiobooks are bloody amazing - read by David Tennant

MagpiePi · 25/03/2024 12:12

The Percy Jackson series, although maybe more appropriate for teens, and the Artemis Fowl series.

Uncle Montague's Tales of Terror by Chris Priestley has some stories in it that did quite scare me!

Neverpostagain · 25/03/2024 12:14

The Christmas Pig JKR

Willmafrockfit · 25/03/2024 12:15

Alfie books, and others by Shirley Hughes, loved the illustrations

CrepuscularCritter · 25/03/2024 12:40

Enjoyed is probably not the right word, but I found A Monster Calls really powerful.

eddiemairswife · 25/03/2024 12:46

The Borrowers.

Turkeyhen · 25/03/2024 12:46

I loved The Skylarks' War by Hilary Mckay

Lunaballoon · 25/03/2024 12:51

Private Peaceful by Michael Morpurgo or anything by him for that matter. Such a great writer.

LarchFairy · 25/03/2024 12:53

Another vote for Holes.
I wouldn't read a childrens book now my DC are grown up though.

SpikeWithoutASoul · 25/03/2024 12:55

The Explorer by Katherine Rundell. She’s an incredible writer.

I enjoyed the zombie stone by e.m. Campbell.
