I've seen an old thread about this and I thought I'd create a new one.

What would you recommend? I love discovering new books!

I loved Henry the Queens Corgi by Georgie Crawley.

CatherineCookSum · 28/03/2024 22:04

I enjoyed reading The Hunger Games trilogy, which I read when my children expressed interest in it, and I wondered what it was about and whether it suitable for them.

FisksSpareSuit · 28/03/2024 22:13

Holes – Louis Sachar - brilliant book
The Thief Lord - Cornelia Funke
The Fireworkmaker's Daughter – Philip Pullman
Alex Rider series by Anthony Horowitz - I was addicted to them
The Mr Gumm books made me laugh so hard I couldn't breathe
The Snail and The Whale makes me cry every time I read it - one of my favourite books ever.

EBearhug · 28/03/2024 23:30

The Thief Lord - Cornelia Funke

She wrote the Inkheart books, too.

Anyone who loves Goodnight Mr Tom must read Back Home by the same author. It’s probably my favourite book of all time and I always recommend it on these threads!

KnitnNatterAuntie · 29/03/2024 05:31

I do wish you would all stop recommending such lovely books! 😂😂😂

I'm trying to downsize my book collection as I will probably be moving in the near future and, as a result of this thread, I now have a long list of 'must have' purchases!!!!!!

Back Home is excellent.

SprinkledGlitter · 29/03/2024 14:05

I remember reading Back Home when I was younger. Smile

KnitnNatterAuntie - I'm loving this thread but it's definitely increased my Amazon spending! Grin

Thanks, everybody. Flowers

'Can you see me?' Forgotten the author name but a great story about autism from a pre-teen's perspective.

Natsku · 29/03/2024 15:02

My parents are moving house and my mum is currently going through my boxes of books in the attic and asking what ones she should keep for me, and thanks to this thread I'm saying yes to a lot of them Grin Should be Back Home in one of those boxes, I remember loving that.

SprinkledGlitter · 29/03/2024 22:18

Natsku - Keep all your books! There's always some random book that becomes rare and expensive to replace, years down the line.

thepastinsidethepresent -:I think that Can You See Me? is by Libby Scott. Lots of people have reserved that at my local library. I hadn't heard of it until you mentioned it.

Thanks all Flowers

"Wind In The Willows" - magic every time. Also, a close second, "Fungus The Bogeyman" by (I think) Raymond Briggs. Wonderfully disgusting illustrations.

CheeseDreamsTonight · 30/03/2024 05:42

Everything Everything by Nicola Yoon.
Kensuke's Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo

I would love to keep all my books but my parents are moving to a house without an attic so have much less space to store my stuff, and I live abroad so can't bring it over very easily. I've said yes to all the ones I can't find in the library system where I am, and the rarer ones (like an English prose version of the Kalevala, looking it up now and I think it might be worth quite a bit!)

Workawayxx · 30/03/2024 09:45

The wizards of once series. By the author of how to train your dragon.

Xylophonics · 31/03/2024 13:46

Charlotte's Web

Private Peaceful, War Horse by Michael Morpugo
Mallory Towers, but more for a laugh at the weird Enid Blyton mindset

Didn't like Jacqueline Wilson books - found the writing style rather basic.

noblegiraffe · 31/03/2024 16:31

For the Diana Wynne Jones fans on this thread, there was just an hour long version of Howl’s Moving Castle on R4 that was good. I’ve been trying to get DD to read the book for years and after the radio version she is now interested!

Bloody love Mallory Towers, mostly for the unsubtle hints at lesbianism.

SprinkledGlitter · 31/03/2024 17:37

Natsku, yeah, sorry I wasn't really thinking it all through properly. Sometimes circumstances mean you don't get to keep everything even though you might want to. I just said it without thinking because I have been shocked at exactly which books have gone for crazy money on Ebay.

Thanks for all these responses Star

The Far Away Tree series. God I loved them! I used to get totally and utterly absorbed into the world of the book and the characters and fully felt like I was there

Bill played the Baron in the pantomime and was always stomping around in breeches being gruff, while Clarissa had one of those classic ‘But Clarissa, you’re beautiful!’ unveilings when she takes off her glasses and braces and reveals Rita Hayworth auburn hair and green eyes. But where does the ‘mannish’ Miss Peters come into the Bill/Clarissa relationship?

Anything by Alan Garner
