How old is your kindle? Should I get a new one?

Just realised my kindle Paperwhite is 10 years old! I don't think I've ever had a piece of tech last that long. Going on holiday in a few weeks and dreading it breaking. It's a bit slow but ok. Should I upgrade? Grateful for opinions!!

I had mine nearly 6 years and upgraded to the newest paperwhite as it was slow and wouldn’t load the store. I’d press for the store and it’d just refresh the home page. Same if I tried to open a book.

I've just seen as well amazon do a trade in deal
20% off a new one and a five quid card if you send your old device back....

Treat yourself to a new one. I replaced my basic kindle which was around 10 years old with a new, still basic, kindle this time with a lit screen which makes reading a lot easier with my poor eyesight.

FizzingAda · 19/02/2024 13:45

I have the original first Kindle, donkeys years old. It still works, but I was forced to buy a new model as they ceased support for it and couldn't load any new books. Quite cross, because the new one is fiddly and complicated, the old,one was basic and easy to use.

beguilingeyes · 19/02/2024 15:55

It's worth looking on Ebay. People upgrade and sell them on as cheap as chips. I bought a Voyage as I like the slightly smaller size.

Doglegs · 19/02/2024 18:45

Ugh amazon says I have to send them my old kindle to be 'appraised' before I can get my 20% off and there are delays with the process... Equates to 30 quid. I've got some John lewis vouchers I could use. Not sure what to do!

I keep my 2014 paperwhite for reading in bed. It is adequate for that. I prefer the reading experience on my iPad for the notes and highlights so probably won't upgrade my actual kindle until it stops working completely

I've got the really basic model which is about ten yrs old. I considered upgrading DH's for Christmas as I was interested to see what new features were around, but honestly couldn't see how the technology has improved in that time. They still work fine and have decent battery life.

Moier · 20/02/2024 18:57

I upgraded my old kindle white to a new kindle white 6 months ago..my old one just stopped working.
Well worth it.

I did this in Nov and really pleased with my new kindle and the money I saved - they even sent me more fir my returned kindle than I expected

I got a new kindle last year. I’d bought my old one in 2012. It’s one of the best decisions I made that year. I had completely got out of the habit of reading. I disliked the grey background on my old kindle and the lack of backlight was problematic for nighttime reading. My new kindle is just the basic one, but is backlit and I love it. I also bought a really cute case, which I know isn’t important, but it makes me happy.

And I’m back into reading! Having also developed a kindle daily deal habit.

In your shoes, I’d have a look and see what features the new ones have.

Edited

When I had my old iPad mini I used to love reading on it; either the kindle app or iBooks.
However, I now love my kindle because I can read in the sunshine which you can't easily on the iPad.

Backlight on kindle is great if you don't want to be restricted by lamp light angles

Mine was bought in Oct 2013 probably the same model as yours @Doglegs - it's still as good as ever however it got filled up ac King time ago and I have to unload books to make space for new ones (largely I've only bought the 99p deals) however I generally use my ipad more - I have a lot of technical books (and cooking books) that are huge and contain many diagrams and/or photos etc so this suits the iPad better. I have only about 1.4Gb on the Paperwhite but I have over 60Gb of books on my ipad - the Kindle still has its place in my life though - my ipad is 12.9" only because I wanted it for digital art projects - frankly the smaller ipads, I think, are far more manageable in most cases.

My kindle is 20 yo and going strong.

rainbowbee · 24/02/2024 15:53

I got the first one which must be over 15 years old now. They did something to the tech so you now need a second device and a separate Wi-Fi to buy a new book rather than the one-click order, which is a bit of a faff, but otherwise it's going strong.

ducktape · 24/02/2024 15:59

I have one of the early models, I got it in 2010 I think? It has a keyboard and a 3g international sim card which still works. No backlight though and you have to click buttons to turn the page. I'd like a back-lit one but it just won't flipping die/break so I have a good enough reason to replace it.

Doglegs · 24/02/2024 16:25

Thanks for your comments. I've sent my old one in seeing as it was getting a bit buggy. Will see how long they take to receive it and send me my twenty percent off code and £5 voucher for a new one!

I have the original one too. I could still load books (but not directly from the device) but the page turning buttons were sticking and it needed charging every 5 minutes. I was given a new paperwhite for my recent birthday. I don't love it as much as the old one but it's early days yet.

I had a leather cover which incorporated a little light. I much prefer this to a back-light.

I love the dyslexic font on mine - I’m not dyslexic but it it’s really easy to read

CocoPlum · 24/02/2024 19:06

I traded in recently as my 7yr old kindle was getting a bit slow and glitched out a few times. I got the trade in voucher really quickly (i traded in my 2011 kindle which broke so I didn't have to give up my working one!).

Just an FYI, when I went to buy a new paperwhite, amazon asked if I wanted it with 3 months free Kindle Unlimited. I said yes. Except that option removed the 20% off! No idea why. I wasn't that fussed so I removed it and when the kindle arrived, the first thing it did when powered on was offer me ... 3 months Unlimited free.

AiryFlyingFairy · 24/02/2024 19:42

I love my Kindle. It's used a lot especially when traveling.
It's nearly 9 years old. Working perfectly but is slow to charge. I am thinking of getting a new one later this year.
Thanks for starting this thread OP,
as I didn't know could trade it in with Amazon & get the discount.

Stanislas · 24/02/2024 19:49

Do you have to delete or archive your books if you send it away? My Kindle is old and I read mainly on iPad. The ones I order via kindle cloud do not appear on the kindle. I’m not very tech savvy at all.

CocoPlum · 25/02/2024 15:02

@Stanislas you can remove your account from your kindle via amazon>account>manage my content and devices, they ask you to do so before sending it in. There's also a thing there to make a device your default for sending kindle books to, otherwise you go into content, select the books you want on kindle, and hit deliver. Then sync the kindle.

Doglegs · 27/02/2024 08:03

Old kindle still hasn't arrived at trade in facility.. only sent on Friday though so perhaps I need to be a bit more patient. 13 days until I go on holiday. If they don't get it within two days of me going I'm just going to have to skip the discount and buy a new one full price! Fingers crossed.

(and if anyone has any holiday read recommendations I'm all ears!)
