I read a lot where I think 'yeah, fine, that was ok' but what have you read recently that made you think 'THAT was a cut above'

So maybe particularly gripping/funny/moving or whatever.

Another Demon Copperhead fan, loved it.

ZittiEBuoni · 29/01/2024 18:14

Piranesi, which I was not even expecting to enjoy, but I couldn't stop thinking about it afterwards.

Two books
Strange sally diamond
And the seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo

Ethan Frome - Edith Wharton

Really enjoying Shrines of Gaiety. Put off reading it as it didn't get especially good reviews, and it's certainly not her best. But I'm still really enjoying it!

Before that, the latest Strike novel, Running Grave.

Still Life by Sarah Winman This was the best book I’ve read in ages!

tobee · 29/01/2024 23:49

I've said this on a couple of threads here recently but The Children of Dynmouth by William Trevor.

Love this one. And all Edith Wharton, in fact, she is so suble a writer.

It is the only Wharton I've read. I'm sorely tempted to buy some more of her works but I put myself on a book buying ban for a while, alas!

All Lisa Jewell book are good & Susan Lewis are good

If you have a kindle you can get her complete works for next to nothing. The only trouble I find with complete works (by any author) is that you get short stories alongside novels, and can't get a feel for how long a read each one will be.

Horse by Geraldine Brooks

And I’ve read a lot of drivel lately! So Horse was a nice change of pace.

I read The Tattooist of auschwitz by Heather Morris last year a true story and very thought provoking. I have just started Cilka's Journey which is the story of one of the character's in the first book.

It's only based on a true story. There's a lot of controversy as to how true any of Heather Morris' books are. Which isn't to say they aren't really really good. But they are technically fiction.

My 5 star reads so far this year are
The quelling by C.L Lauder
Artifical Wisdom by Tom Weaver
Munich Wolf by Rory Clements
The Villa by Jess Ryder.

I've almost finished Good Girl Deprogramming by Michelle Minnikin and it's looking like another 5 star.

purpleme12 · 30/01/2024 00:32

Honestly I thought the Tattooist of Auschwitz was rubbish

SunflowerSeeds123 · 30/01/2024 01:42

Following on from an earlier poster, All the Light...by Anthony Doerr is brilliant. I was very let down by the recent adaptation. They changed the bloody story! But the book is very much a must read.

Umanresources · 30/01/2024 01:52

Just finished reading Blood Harvest by Sharon Bolton. Really enjoyed it and stayed up till 5 the other morning, then finished it the following day. It was a real page turner.

In Memoriam by Alice Winn.

Whereisthecatks · 11/02/2024 10:31

A Dark Matter by Doug Johnstone. 1st book in the Skelfs series, 3 generations of women running a funeral directors combined with private investigators. Dark humour and great use of language.

LethargeMarg · 23/02/2024 07:31

In memoriam is amazing and my favourite book of last year
I've just finished Zone of Interest (reminded me of the boy in the striped pyjamas -a grown up version) which I enjoyed but got a bit confused with
Before that I read a fantastic YA book called 'a boy like me' which was a bit like heartstopper if it was set in 1994 and less of a fairytale.

Me too. And Cilka’s Journey.
Important stories but so badly written.
I enjoyed Mudlarking, by Laura Maiklem recently. It’s a fascinating account of things she finds washed up on the banks of the River Thames.
I didn’t realise you had to be licensed to poke about on the river banks.

purpleme12 · 23/02/2024 13:35

Glad it's not just me people seem to rave about it!
My favourite ever book is about the Holocaust but The Tattooist of Auschwitz just made me feel nothing!

thisiswheretheseagullfliesaway · 23/02/2024 13:37

Call the Canaries Home by Laura Barrow best this year so far.

I hate autocorrect

Bellabluea · 24/02/2024 13:00

Not a new book but I’ve just finished ‘I am pilgrim’ by Terry Hayes and it was just sublime.
I also recently loved Demon Copperhead and A little life.
I don’t post here a lot but I’ve loved getting recommendations!
