I may be late to the party with these two but: Taylor Jenkins Reid and Colleen Hoover. Love them both. I like easy reading but well written. Looking for inspiration for 2024 reading - share your favourite authors please?

Worked my way through lots of Ann Patchett novels last year. Had a very nice time!

Papyrophile · 08/01/2024 17:39

Most of my obvious favourites are already here but if you like crime, history and politics: Robert Harris, Joel Dicker, Chris Hammer, Charles Cummings and Quentin Jardine. Plus Dorothy Dunnett.

Elly Griffiths

Lyndsey Davis Falco series 20 books! If you like Roman history and detective novels these are great. I thought that Book 1- The silver Pigs - wasn't a brilliant start but she gets into her stride with the characters as she goes along and by the end of book two, I just knew that I was going to read them all ! . Recommended by Mary Beard .

Robin Hobb.
I was hooked after the first chapter, an amazing read for fantasy fans.

Laurie Graham but I'd say her books are marmite.
Some of them are based on historical events through the eyes of a fictional character eg JFK's nursemaid, a fictional companion to one of George III's daughters etc. Others are pure fiction.
You will either love them or hate them! For me, they are the ultimate comfort read and a her complete works would be joining me on any Desert Island I end up on

Oh I am so with you on Laurie Graham. I think I have read nearly everything she has written and own most of them. Some of my favourite all time books are hers.

Not so sure about the Dr Dan series. I was shocked she had to basically self publish them and AFAIK the most recent is only available as an book.

Some I have read many times - Future Homemakers of America, At Sea, Dress Circle. Just before Christmas I had a re-read of Anyone for Seconds and The Humble Companion. So good.

Louise Penny - start with Still Life and work your way through the series

betterangels · 09/01/2024 12:05

Murakami.

@5foot5 you do know you're now my new Best Friend? 😂
So few of my friends/family get her, whereas I am utterly drawn in and feel such a genuine affection for her characters. I'm not so keen on Life According to Lubka and The Liar's Daughter. My absolute comfort read is At Sea, which is bizarre as it's such an odd storyline. The books where she draws on history (Gone with the Windsors, Importance of Being Kennedy, Grand Duchess of Nowhere and Humble Companion) are simply glorious!

Ambertonix · 10/01/2024 13:13

Steve Cavanagh. His Eddie Flynn series is edge of your seat stuff! Also love anything by Shari Lapena or Peter Swanson

Lady Enid Finch is one of my favourite fictional characters.

Have you read Mr Starlight? I think that is an interesting one because, although not strictly a historical one, Mr Starlight is such a Liberace like figure. I would like to read that one again but I borrowed it from the library and it is no longer available so I guess I will have to track it down and buy it.

ChanelNo19EDT · 12/01/2024 22:55

Freida mcfadden, I can't believe how many she's written! Should keep me busy a while.

Falifornia · 13/01/2024 08:52

@5foot5 11 quid on Amazon-go grab it!
Again, another book where such nuanced characters are developed. And I cannot believe I didn't see the massive plot twist coming the first time I read it!! I was clearly so sucked in, I missed the clues dropped in the early chapters

Riverlee · 18/01/2024 18:52

Lucinda Riley
Rhys Bowen
Robert Harris
Steve Higgs
Claire Macintosh

Very old one, but I discovered Dick Francis at the age of ten and devoured his back catalogue. Excellent reads, he’s done his research and you get through one book in an afternoon.

Know it’s an old thread but just to say thanks. You’ve prompted me to reread them and I’m pleasantly surprised how much I’m enjoying it.

BinkyBeaufort · 04/03/2024 21:55

Louise Penny.
I read one of her Armand Gamache Three Pines novels and was hooked.
Happily, there are 18 of them.
Unhappily I raced through all 18 in just a couple of months, so now looking for another undiscovered treasure trove.
Thank goodness for libraries that will order books in for you, otherwise I'd have been skint.

Thanks @whatkatydid2014! My grandmother is also a fan and described him as "the only author who could make accounting interesting" about Banker, in my view his best (it's actually about investment banking, back when investment banking was boring).

Maudeslittleredshoes · 06/03/2024 13:09

Jonathan Kellerman, Lindwood Barclay.

Exit was brilliant, so I picked up one of her other books. They were not a similar style at all!
