I may be late to the party with these two but: Taylor Jenkins Reid and Colleen Hoover. Love them both. I like easy reading but well written. Looking for inspiration for 2024 reading - share your favourite authors please?

Louise O' Neill.

Patricia Wentworth. Her Miss Silver books and also the stand alones. shed I love Cynthia Harrod Eagles Bill Slider books, keep meaning to check out her other ones.

Have binge-read Loretta Chase. I was always a bit snooty about "bodice rippers", but her books are a lot of fun. I do go back to Georgette Heyer a lot, I have read them over and over.

LittleCrackers · 20/12/2023 10:08

Lisa Jewell, but I didn't go right the way back as the genre was different back then!

devildeepbluesea · 20/12/2023 10:10

Susan Hill
Robert Goddard
Simon Brett

All crime, but rather different types

Falifornia · 20/12/2023 10:14

Laurie Graham but I'd say her books are marmite.
Some of them are based on historical events through the eyes of a fictional character eg JFK's nursemaid, a fictional companion to one of George III's daughters etc. Others are pure fiction.
You will either love them or hate them! For me, they are the ultimate comfort read and a her complete works would be joining me on any Desert Island I end up on

Alice and Claude Askew; romantic mysteries from the Edwardian period. Hard to find, though...

Wow, you're not kidding they're rare! I found two in Open Library, my go-to for free reading. Must investigate them.
Btw I found an out of print contemporary Georgette Heyer novel about a sexless marriage on Open Library - talk about back catalogue!

Hellohah · 20/12/2023 10:20

I second Georgette Heyer.

I read Rebecca very late, so am working through Daphne Du Maurier.

Me too. A friend recommended her books and I've since bought them all and read them several times, apart from one,

NooNakedJacuzziness · 20/12/2023 11:58

John Steinbeck, think I've read almost all of his now. Only one I didn't like - The Winter of our Discontent.

Oh yes, so many books, so little time! Will investigate these suggestions.

With Georgette Heyer I re read These Old Shades etc in order, the rest at random.

Dorothy L Sayers I start at Whose Body and read them all in order.

Lois McMaster Bujold is a tricky one because Shards of Honour and the Warrior's Apprentice came out together and I read (devoured) them at the same time. When Barrayar came out a few years later I read it knowing the outcomes from the previous books and actually I loved seeing the younger versions of much loved characters.

TeaAndStrumpets · 20/12/2023 12:49

Some more crime!

Reginald Hill
Ian Rankin
John Harvey

LydiaGwilt · 20/12/2023 15:01

I second Laurie Graham - she captures different authorial voices very wittily.
Also Monica Dickens - not much read nowadays but worth finding.
And for those who've just discovered Georgette Heyer, there are some great podcasts here: https://heyertoday.libsyn.com/

Heyer Today

Fable Gazers Season 2: Heyer Today takes a deep dive into the life and work of Georgette Heyer, plus a book club, a cinematic investigation and amazing guests like Stephen Fry, Joanne Harris, Mary Jo Putney and more.
