Can anyone recommend any books set in Nazi Germany or interestingly written non fiction books about the period. For an 18 year old

The Book Thief by Markus Suzak
Alone in Berlin by Hans Fallada

I read this one recently and found it really interesting:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Village-Third-Reich-Transformed-bestseller/dp/1783966211

Terfosaurus · 21/11/2023 14:35

Mischling 2nd Degree by Ilse Koehn.

FinallyHere · 21/11/2023 14:37

How about the Judith Kerr Trilogy

HardcoreLadyType · 21/11/2023 14:38

The Nine by Gwen Strauss is a non fiction book about some women in the resistance who were imprisoned in a concentration camp, and escaped the death marches. One of the women was related to the author.

My book group read it and everyone gave it either 4 or 5 stars.

Another recent non fiction book, written by Daniel Finkelstein, is Hitler, Stalin, Mum and Dad.

HardcoreLadyType · 21/11/2023 14:39

I also second the book suggested by FadedRed.

Headunderthecovers · 21/11/2023 14:45

Mischling second degree has a terrible cover, but is definitely worth reading.

Thank you all, lots to choose from

This is a great suggestion. It is very readable and eye opening. Her book Travellers in the Third Reich is also excellent.

There's a really interesting book full of first hand testimonials of the build up and Nazi government itself by ordinary people and diplomats- I can't remember its name but it's fascinating and an easy read. Was published maybe 2017?

This sounds like Travellers in the Third Reich by Julia Boyd.

Any of the good books about Sophie Scholl and the White Rose movement. For example Sophie Scholl and the White Rose by Annette Dumbach and Jud Newborn.

Mischling 2nd Degree by Ilse Koehn.

This was my first thought too.

Could it be What We Knew by Eric Johnson? It was compiled from oral histories and is fascinating (and disturbing) reading.

Two books that use letters by Germans written during WW2 by:
Nicholas Stargardt. A historian, Professor at Oxford

The German War and Witnesses, the Children's War.
Neither are easy reading.

Usou · 22/11/2023 21:50

Inside the Third Reich by Albert Speer.

Terpsichore · 22/11/2023 21:51

The Cut-Out Girl by Bart van Es was a gripping read, I thought.

Is the 18 year old studying German at A Level?

Does he/she have an interest in a particular aspect of this era?

LightSpeeds · 22/11/2023 22:18

'The Zone of Interest' by Martin Amis (about a concentration camp).
