Marooned in the snow stories

For the winter I want to read stories about severe winter. One easy read is Sylvester by Georgette Heyer. A humble country pub on The Bath Road, deep snow, impassable road, titled visitor with one servant.
Any suggestions of titles please? Dickens? Any of the family sagas? Cynthia Harrod-Eagles?

There is the train in the snow in Orient Express. Any other trains?

Nando Parrado, that should say

Bookist · 25/10/2023 16:16

The Hunger by Alma Katsu. Superbly chilling. Loosely based on the Donner Pass incident.

Iactuallydidit · 25/10/2023 22:14

The Great Alone by Kristen Hannah, The Long Winter as PP has mentioned, Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe 🥰..

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 26/10/2023 08:26

Ngaio Marsh, Death and the Dancing Footman. A country house party is trapped by heavy snow and then there's a murder.

(Sorry, just seen this has already been mentioned).

This sort of thing always makes me think of children's literature so I would say The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe

Moomin books (not sure which Blush)

If you kind either of these as they are bit obscure, Cold Christmas by Nina Beachcroft and some of the stories from The Bullerby Children by Astrid Lindgren (of Pippi Longstocking fame) set in a town in Sweden.

tobee · 27/10/2023 22:58

*can find not if you kind.

Oh oh oh! The Box of Delights!!
(I suspect there might be a few people of my vintage on here....)

❤❤❤

A short story suggestion: Master and Man by Tolstoy

Hatty65 · 28/10/2023 17:29

Another great Georgette Heyer about being snowbound is The Talisman Ring. One of my favourites.

KillingMeDeftly · 28/10/2023 17:43

I LOVE Cynthia Harrod-Eagles Morland Dynasty - it's real comfort reading for me. I'm doing a reread of all 35 atm because after a gap of 10 years, volume 36 will be released next summer!

www.abebooks.co.uk/9780006133964/Escape-alone-David-Howarth-0006133967/plp

It's the true story of a Norwegian commando escaping across the mountains from Norway to Sweden. Lots of snow!

Aparecium · 28/10/2023 17:48

Laura Ingalls Wilder, The Long Winter

EducatingArti · 28/10/2023 17:49

Not sure if it is still in print but Stranger at Snowfall by Malcolm Saville is a good one. It is a children's book and features a train stranded in snow.

Midwinter in Moomin Valley x

Another great Georgette Heyer about being snowbound is The Talisman Ring. One of my favourites.

Apart from the very irritating heroine. You can see after a few pages why the man doesn't want to marry her.

Leggytigberk · 28/10/2023 19:15

@KillingMeDeftly Can you narrow down which of the 35 might answer my search. Snow or severe winter are what I seek.

ALL Thanks for the suggestions, Some like the Shackleton, Scott and Non fiction are too serious for this time.
Funny thing is my County Library does not have the Ngaiao Marsh that has been recommended, I shall order it from them.

The Kate Shugak series by Dana Stabenow. It's a crime series set in Alaska, lots of cold and snow and wilderness. Oh and an adorable half wolf (I think) named Mutt who I want to live with me.

AuntieDolly · 28/10/2023 20:01

White Corridor by Christopher Fowler in the Bryant & May series may fit the bill

AppropriateAdult · 28/10/2023 20:18

Winter Solstice (Rosamund Pilcher) is a lovely Christmassy comfort read - a (handsome) stranger snowbound with a family group in a Scottish village, a smattering of romance and a few teary bits. Much better written and far less cliched than I'm making it sound!

Paradiseflycatcher · 30/10/2023 12:10

Moominland Midwinter ...try and get a vintage copy of the book with the wonderful black and white illustrations. Love it so much

Notoironing · 30/10/2023 13:20

At uni I did an essay comparing The Dead by James Joyce with the film The Ice Storm starring Sigourney Weaver.

Notoironing · 30/10/2023 13:26

Sorry how they use the symbolism of the snow and ice.

Hatty65 · 31/10/2023 15:54

@MrsDanversGlidesAgain Ah, yes - but the real heroine is Miss Sarah Thane who is rather fabulous with a terrific sense of humour.

Eustacie is certainly an idiot!

The Quality of Silence by Rosamund Lupton - mother and her deaf daughter in the Alaskan wilderness on a quest and being pursued.

That sounds right up my street!

Tellmeallthestories · 31/10/2023 16:01

The Sanatorium by Sarah Pearse

bimbimbap · 31/10/2023 16:15

I’m currently reading ‘ordeal by hunger’ about the donner party, but not sure it’ll be a cosy read!
