Re-read Twopence to Cross the Mersey

The Bumper Book of Ghost Stories (it was 10p in a charity shop, and quite good, but not at all creepy sadly)

Jane Austen At Home - Lucy Worsley. I don't like Jane Austen's novels but this is a very good book.

Mothership4two · 22/10/2023 09:57

Ooh Jane Austen At Home is going on my list. Love Austen and Lucy Worsley

So interesting. I absolutely loved The hearts invisible furies. Loved One day. Whet did you think of Small pleasures @ADHDat43 ? It's one of my favourites. Such a gentle book.

Gosh I loved it!! She is a superb writer. I felt it so eloquently and carefully represented the era in which it was set and the internal emotional life of the main character. I've just passed it to my mum; she'll adore it.

Ylvamoon · 22/10/2023 10:13

Shelley Parker-Chan She who became the Sun
Tracy Chevalier Remarkable Creatures
Hanna Michell - Excavations

All 3 are very different but well written with a female protagonist....

Exactly the same as me!

Just about to read new Jack Reacher.

What are the chances! I found it a diverse and highly satisfying trilogy.

The Running Grave (JKR/RG)

Theimpossiblegirl · 22/10/2023 10:17

Strange Sally Diamond

Isthiscorrect · 22/10/2023 10:21

Currently reading The bone cay

Previous 3
The phone box at the end of the world
Celestial bodies
The invisible life of Addie LaRue

Thank goodness I was fortunate with these three because the previous few had been decidedly average.

Hellohah · 22/10/2023 10:24

I've had a bit of a rut since I finished The Running Grave but have just started The Armour of Light by Ken Follett (I love most of his books). I was hoping to read Tom Lake but someone nicked the copy I'd reserved from the library :(

But the last 3 were...

Hidden Pictures, Jason Rekulak (was ok-ish)

I will find you, Harlan Coben (thought it was pretty shit, just a run of the mill churned out thriller type book with no substance)

A Court of Wings and Ruin, Sarah J Maas (got free on Kindle with the first 2 and thought it was so different from Strike, I read 3 of them. There are more in the series, but I've had my fill of them now so won't be reading anymore).

Mothership4two · 22/10/2023 11:01

I read A Court of Thorns and Roses series @Hellohah. The first two were readable but I found I like them less so as the series went on. I got them cheap on Kindle and wanted to read the lot. Although it is a fantasy, it has to have believability within that universe to hold the story together, but there were too many plot and character changes from book to book and some unbelievable plot twists even in that world.

Hellohah · 22/10/2023 11:22

@Mothership4two they served a purpose I guess, there not the kind of thing I normally read but finished the 3 of them in about 4 days haha! The offer clicked on Amazon for the fourth but I got really bored with the third one that I knew I wouldn't read it.

You made a wise decision. Number 4 is A Court of Silver Flames and it was the worst of the lot. It's about the unpleasant sister. I stupidly bought the set before I had read any on the strength of Goodreads ratings and as they were only 99p each. It's put me off anything to do with faeries!

Harold Bloom: Take Arms Against a Sea of Troubles

(His last book, and a beautiful farewell to the poems that have shaped his life)

Evelyn Waugh: Brideshead Revisited

(I'm a big fan of Waugh, but had never actually sat down and read this from cover to cover.)

Quentin Bell: Virginia Woolf: A Biography

(Best book I've read in ages. I love Woolf's world almost as much as I love the world of Oscar Wilde)
