Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan
One Day by David Nicholls
A Town Like Alice by Nevil Shute

I thought Small Things Like These was well written, but was more like a short story than a fully developed novel, an interesting read though.
I didn't really enjoy One Day, couldn't feel any sympathy with either of the main characters, and thought it needed seriously cutting. I skipped large chunks of it when it just became too tedious. I should have just abandoned it!
A Town Like Alice was enjoyable, I especially liked the narrator, but the ending was a bit too cosy and twee.

I'm now reading Bournville by Jonathan Coe.

A Murder is Announced - Agatha Christie
One Two Buckle My Shoe - Agatha Christie
The Last Remains - Elly Griffiths

All read while I plough through Mary Beard’s SPQR and book eleventy thousand in the Wheel of Time series, both of which I’m making very slow progress with.

ZiriForEver · 22/10/2023 01:06

The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (Suzanne Collins)
The Lunatic Caffe (Laurell K. Hamilton)
"To Work" (Katerina Nedbalova, not available in English, a sociologic collection of recollections of people in different professions)

Honorary mention
Through the language glass (Guy Deutscher) - it is the book I read over the time, bit by bit. It needs pauses to let the ideas sink in.

True History by Lucian
Our Hidden Lives by Simon Garfield
Hogfather by Terry Pratchett

anxious people is an excellent book, littlecrackers

Noname99 · 22/10/2023 01:26

My silent war - K Philby having watched A spy among Friends. V disappointed as it doesn’t explain why he became a committed communist nor why he believes what he does nor how he got away with it. It’s v boring narrative about what job he held when.

The Hearts invisible furies - J Boyle. Hated this book. So disappointed as it had such good reviews. A
most awful main character who behaves appallingly at every turn but is justified and entitled all the way through cos he’s a man and ‘can’t help it’ while the real victims are the women in the novel who literally have their lives ripped apart but they are the unimportant backstory. I was infuriated all the way through!

A Hillbilly Elegy - thought provoking, eye opening, depressing in equal measures ,

Unabletomitigate · 22/10/2023 07:07

The Vegatrian Myth, Liere Kieth
A hard read, but interesting and terrifying.

The Player of Games, Ian M Banks
Wish I lived in the Culture.

Children of Time, Adrian Tchaikovsky
A good read.
